I would have listened."

His eyes became wet.

He said he knew that.

I believed him.

And that somehow made it worse.

He knew I loved him.

He knew I would have been worried.

He knew I might have tried to help.

Yet he had gone along with a plan to move my property beyond my control.

I looked at him for a long time.

"You decided it was better if I wasn't involved."

He covered his face.

"I'm sorry, Mom."

I let him sit there.

When he was a little boy, Michael used to come into our bedroom during thunderstorms.

He would stand beside the bed holding his blanket.

Robert would lift the covers.

Michael would climb between us and fall asleep almost immediately.

He was always such a tenderhearted child.

He worried when one of us was sick.

He cried when Robert had to travel for work.

Once, he made me a birthday card with so much glue that the paper wouldn't close.

I kept that card for years.

I had never expected my son to remain a little boy.

I wanted him to become a responsible man.

A husband.

A father.

Someone capable of making difficult decisions.

But as I watched him sitting opposite me, I wondered how he had learned to avoid responsibility by allowing someone else to be cruel.

I didn't ask him whether Vanessa had forced him.

He had already admitted he could have stopped her.

He simply hadn't.

The fire settled behind us.

I looked toward the mantel.

Then I asked him about the grandchildren.

I had been afraid of that question all evening.

"Michael, what did you tell your children about me?"

He looked up.

"What do you mean?"

"Why did they think I wasn't spending Christmas with them?"

He swallowed.

I waited.

He told me they had been given an explanation.

Grandma liked being at home.

Grandma enjoyed having her own quiet holiday.

Grandma didn't want to make the trip anymore.

I looked away.

He had lied to his own children.

About me.

My grandson Daniel had once followed me everywhere during Christmas.

Emily used to stand beside me when I baked cookies.

Sophie was younger, but I still remembered the way she held on to my hand when we walked through the resort.

I had imagined them asking why I wasn't there.

I had also imagined that perhaps they had stopped asking.

That had been one of the most painful possibilities.

"What do they believe now?" I asked.

Michael looked miserable.

"They still think you prefer staying home."

I pressed my lips together.

I didn't want to cry in front of him.

Not because I was ashamed.

Because I was afraid that if I started, I wouldn't be able to finish the conversation.

I took a breath.

"Then I want to see them tomorrow."

He hesitated.

"They've had a long day, Mom."

"So have I."

He nodded.

I kept my voice steady.

"I haven't had a proper Christmas with them in three years."

"I understand."

"Do you?"

He looked up.

I wasn't asking him to explain himself again.

I wanted him to understand that three years were not a small inconvenience.

Children grew during three years.

Their voices changed.

They developed new interests.

They stopped believing certain things.

They began to understand others.

Those were moments I couldn't recover from a photograph.

Michael said he would arrange a visit.

I believed he would try.

But I was no longer prepared to depend entirely on what he promised.

He stood to leave.

For a moment, he looked at the fireplace the way Robert used to.

Then he turned toward me.

"Mom, are you planning to give up the membership?"

I stared at him.

Even after everything we had discussed, he still needed to ask.

I answered carefully.

"No."

He nodded.

I continued.

"But nobody will be allowed to use it without my approval."

His face tightened.

I could tell he was wondering what that meant for future holidays.

I let him wonder.

I had spent years answering questions before my children even asked them.

I was done doing that.

"This isn't about punishing everyone," I told him.

"I know."

"It's about remembering whose decision it is."

He looked down.

Before he reached the door, I called his name.

He turned.

"If you want this family to recover, you have to stop letting someone else decide whether I belong."

He nodded.

This time, he didn't offer an excuse.

After he left, I locked the door.

I stood in the quiet living room for a while.

The chair by the fireplace was empty.

I remembered Robert reading his newspaper there.

I remembered how he used to look up when Michael entered the room.

There had been so much love between them.

I wondered what Robert would have said if he had heard that conversation.

I didn't try to answer for him.

That would have been too easy.

I went to bed knowing I had been told the truth about Michael's money.

But I still didn't know how much work Vanessa had already done to take control of the membership.

The next morning, I woke earlier than usual.

The red rocks outside my window were catching the morning sunlight.

I made coffee and carried it to the patio.

The air was cool.

Birds were calling from the trees.

I sat there and listened.

For the first time in three years, I wasn't waiting for somebody to send me pictures from Sedona.

I was there myself.

I could smell the coffee.

I could see the mountains.

I could hear footsteps along the path.

It should have been ordinary.

Instead, it felt like getting back something I had nearly surrendered.

At about nine thirty, someone knocked.

I expected Michael to arrive with the children.

When I opened the door, Lauren stood there alone.

She was carrying a small gift bag.

"Morning, Margaret."

I smiled.

"Come inside, sweetheart."

She stepped through the doorway.

She looked nervous.

Not frightened.

Just uncertain about how to begin.

She put the bag on the table.

"I brought you a Christmas present."

I looked at it.

"You didn't need to do that."

"I wanted to."

I thanked her and asked her to sit down.

She held her hands together for a moment.

Then she apologized.

I was surprised.

"Lauren, what are you apologizing for?"

She looked at me.

"For believing you didn't want to come here."

I sat opposite her.

She explained that Michael had repeated the same story every Christmas.

He said I preferred staying home.

He said I was happier away from Sedona.

Lauren had wondered about it, but she had accepted his explanation.

Now she regretted not asking me herself.

I reached across the table.

"Michael was responsible for what he told you."

She nodded.

"But I could have called."

"Yes, you could have."

We sat quietly.

I didn't want to make her feel worse.

But I also didn't want to pretend nothing had happened.

Lauren looked toward the tree.

"The children asked about you, Margaret."

I felt my throat tighten.

"Did they?"

She nodded.

"Every year."

I looked down at my coffee.

I had tried so hard to accept that the grandchildren were growing away from me.

I thought perhaps I had become someone they remembered only when they saw an old photograph.

But Lauren told me that wasn't true.

Emily still remembered baking Christmas cookies with me.

Daniel talked about the little wooden train Robert had given him.

And Sophie still had the ornament I bought for her during her first visit.

I put my hand over my mouth.

For three years, I had believed I was disappearing from their memories.

They had been remembering me all along.

I looked at Lauren.

"I thought they had forgotten."

She shook her head.

"They never did."

Then she opened her handbag.

There was something else she wanted to show me.

She took out her phone and found a photograph from the previous Christmas.

Vanessa and Michael were standing near the resort's decorated tree.

The children were smiling.

It was the sort of picture that had hurt me when I was alone at home.

But Lauren wasn't showing me the smiles.

She was showing me a message beneath the photograph.

It had been sent on October 14.

Vanessa had warned her not to let the children contact me about Christmas.

She didn't want me becoming upset and interfering with the arrangements.

I read it twice.

Then Lauren showed me another message.

Vanessa had written that they only needed to get through that Christmas.

Once ownership was moved, she believed they wouldn't have to deal with me questioning their plans.

I looked at Lauren.

"When did she send this?"

"That same conversation."

I felt my stomach tighten.

Vanessa hadn't merely been annoyed by my questions.

She had been waiting for a time when I would no longer be allowed to ask them.

Lauren scrolled further.

There was another message.

This one was meant for Michael.

It concerned what they planned to do after Christmas.

Vanessa wanted him to help persuade me to sign the transfer papers.

If I resisted, he was supposed to remind me that Robert had wanted the resort to remain in the family.

I stared at the screen.

Robert.

They intended to use my dead husband's wishes to make me surrender my own rights.

I had heard enough.

I set the phone down carefully.

My hands were trembling.

Lauren looked worried.

"I'm sorry, Margaret."

I shook my head.

"Don't erase those messages."

"I won't."

"Please keep every one of them."

She nodded.

Then she asked whether I was considering involving an attorney.

I looked out at the Christmas decorations beyond the window.

For most of my life, I had believed that loving a family meant finding a way to forgive.

I still believed forgiveness mattered.

But I had begun to see how easily forgiveness could be mistaken for permission.

I told Lauren I hadn't decided what steps I would take.

Then I gave her the one answer I was certain about.

"I won't sign away that membership."

She seemed relieved.

"Good."

For a moment, I thought that was the end of what she had come to tell me.

Then she reached into her handbag again.

She took out a folded envelope.

I looked at it.

"What's that?"

Her expression became serious.

"Richard asked me to make sure you saw this."

I opened the envelope.

Inside were copies of documents Vanessa had asked him to prepare.

I spread the pages across the table.

The first described a proposed transfer.

The next listed details of my resort membership.

Then I reached the third page.

My name was already printed beneath a blank signature line.

Beside it was a date.

December 27.

I stared at the paper.

Three days after Christmas.

I hadn't been invited to discuss anything.

I hadn't been asked whether I wanted to transfer my property.

Yet someone had already chosen the day I was supposed to sign it away.

And I had a terrible feeling that this was no longer only about my children wanting to enjoy a holiday without me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: A December Twenty-Seventh Signature Date Led Me Back to
