she asked.

The receptionist explained that the Christmas bookings were almost full.

There might be space at another property operated by the resort, but nothing was certain.

Vanessa let out a tired sigh.

"Then see what you can find."

I watched her turn away.

She seemed ready to leave without giving me a single honest answer.

For three years, she had managed to avoid that conversation.

I didn't intend to let her do it again.

"Vanessa, before you go, tell me why I was never invited."

She turned back.

"Mom, we've been through this."

"No. You've talked around it."

Michael closed the folder of statements.

"Could we handle this somewhere private?"

I looked at him.

"Apparently, my absence was discussed plenty when I wasn't around."

He fell silent.

Vanessa pressed her lips together.

I waited.

For the first time since she had arrived, she looked less certain of herself.

Then she finally said it.

"You kept making the resort feel like it was your place."

I stared at her.

"It is my place."

She shook her head.

"That's exactly what I mean."

I didn't understand at first.

I thought perhaps she was upset about how we divided rooms or organized meals.

But that wasn't what she meant.

She resented being reminded that her parents had paid for the membership.

She wanted to arrive every Christmas and feel that the resort belonged entirely to her generation.

She didn't want the older generation asking questions.

She didn't want me discussing Robert.

She didn't want me remembering how it all began.

Richard looked at her with disbelief.

"Vanessa, listen to yourself."

She brushed him aside.

"Every year, Mom had to remind us how she and Dad got the membership."

I felt heat rise into my face.

"Because we did."

"Mom, you don't understand what that was like."

I looked at my daughter.

"Then tell me."

She threw up her hands.

She said that when the family gathered, everyone felt as though they were still children in their parents' home.

She wanted freedom.

She wanted to plan activities without explaining them.

She wanted to decide who stayed in which room and what the children would be doing.

I remembered the questions I used to ask.

I had wanted to know which grandchildren were sleeping together.

I had wanted to know who was coming for dinner.

I had wanted to know whether the little ones needed anything before the holiday.

Those questions had seemed ordinary to me.

The sort of things a grandmother asked when she was happy to have everybody under one roof.

Vanessa remembered them differently.

She called them exhausting.

I didn't know what to say.

I kept thinking of the evenings when I had stayed home with the Christmas lights on.

I had imagined the children playing near the fireplace.

I had wondered whether anybody missed me.

All that time, my daughter had considered my presence an obstacle to a more comfortable vacation.

"Did I ever demand that you repay me?" I asked.

Vanessa shook her head.

"Money isn't the point."

"Then why did you continue accepting the membership?"

"Because it's our family tradition."

I looked at her.

"Our family?"

She didn't like the question.

I didn't raise my voice.

I didn't need to.

"If you wanted a holiday without me, you could have arranged one."

She folded her arms.

"That's not fair."

"You could have rented somewhere else. You could have chosen another Christmas destination. You could have made whatever plans you wanted."

She looked toward Michael.

I continued.

"But you couldn't decide to use my membership, have me cover the fees, and then tell everybody I didn't want to come."

Richard nodded.

"Margaret has every reason to be upset."

Vanessa turned on him.

"Why are you taking her side?"

"Because I was told something that wasn't true."

I could see his embarrassment.

He hadn't known that his wife had been lying to him.

I could also see the way Lauren was studying Michael.

She was beginning to understand that her husband had done the same thing.

I felt no satisfaction in that.

I had never wanted to humiliate my children in front of their spouses.

I wanted to spend Christmas with them.

That was all I had wanted from the beginning.

Richard stepped closer to the desk.

"Vanessa, I need to tell Margaret about those forms."

Her face changed.

"Don't."

I looked at him.

"What forms?"

Richard reached into his coat and took out his phone.

He explained that Vanessa had approached him roughly two months earlier.

She wanted his help preparing documents involving the resort membership.

At first, I thought he meant ordinary reservation paperwork.

Then he said the word transfer.

I felt my hands go still.

"Transfer it where?"

Richard looked uncomfortable.

"Into Vanessa's name, possibly with Michael included."

I turned toward my daughter.

"Did you ask him to do that?"

Vanessa didn't answer.

Michael stepped forward.

"What paperwork are we talking about?"

Vanessa looked furious.

"Michael, stop making a scene."

He didn't back down.

"Did you ask Richard to transfer Mom's membership?"

Richard answered before she could.

"She told me Margaret had already agreed."

I looked at Vanessa.

"I agreed to no such thing."

Vanessa's expression tightened.

She tried to explain that she had expected my agreement eventually.

As though expecting something made it hers.

As though my signature were simply a formality she could arrange in advance.

Then she said something that made me feel older than I had ever felt.

She reminded us that I was seventy-one.

She asked what possible reason I could have for keeping a Christmas membership indefinitely.

I looked at my daughter.

For a moment, I saw her as a little girl with Christmas wrapping paper in her hair.

Then I saw the woman standing before me.

"Vanessa, being seventy-one doesn't mean my life is finished."

She turned away.

Michael spoke quietly.

"That's enough, Vanessa."

But she kept insisting that she was thinking about the family.

The membership ought to remain available to everyone, she said.

She wasn't trying to take anything.

She was only planning ahead.

I listened.

Then I asked the question she still couldn't answer.

"If keeping the family together mattered so much, why was I the person you removed?"

She said nothing.

I stopped arguing after that.

I was tired.

Not physically, although the journey and the confrontation had worn me down.

I was tired of explaining why I should be included in something I had spent thirty years helping create.

When the conversation finally ended, I went to my casita.

I carried my own suitcase inside.

I set it near the bedroom door and stood in the living room.

The place was almost exactly as I remembered.

The fireplace was built from the same rough stone.

The ceiling beams were dark and familiar.

The little window still looked toward the red rocks.

I ran my hand over the back of Robert's favorite chair.

He used to sit there with his newspaper.

I could still remember the sound of the pages turning.

On cold mornings, he would ask whether the coffee was ready.

I would tell him he could make it himself.

He would laugh and stay where he was.

That simple exchange had been part of our marriage for years.

Now the chair was empty.

I lowered myself into it.

I hadn't sat there since before those three lonely Christmases.

For a while, I simply looked at the fireplace.

Then I spoke aloud.

"Robert, I found my way back."

It was a small thing to say.

But I needed to hear my own voice in that room.

I had spent so long letting other people explain what I wanted.

I wanted to say something true.

My phone rang shortly before eight that evening.

Michael.

I looked at his name for several seconds.

I almost ignored the call.

After everything that had happened, I didn't feel ready to be asked for another favor.

But I answered.

"Hello?"

"Mom, are you by yourself?"

"Yes."

He sounded tired.

He asked whether he could come over.

I wanted to know why.

He said he needed to talk to me without everyone else present.

I looked at the fireplace.

Then I agreed.

About twenty minutes later, I heard a knock.

Michael stood outside with his jacket open.

The wind had disturbed his hair.

He looked older than he had in the lobby.

Not because of his face.

Because of the way he was holding himself.

He came inside and walked toward the fireplace.

He stood there for a moment before taking a seat.

I sat opposite him.

Neither of us spoke immediately.

Finally, he looked up.

"I handled this badly, Mom."

I waited.

He swallowed.

"I owe you an apology."

I nodded.

"You do."

His eyes dropped.

"I know saying it doesn't fix everything."

"No."

He took a breath.

Then he told me that the transfer paperwork wasn't only about keeping the family tradition going.

There was another reason.

Something he hadn't been willing to tell me.

I felt an uneasy sensation in my stomach.

"What reason, Michael?"

He rubbed his face with both hands.

He had made a business investment with a friend the previous year.

He believed it would work.

It hadn't.

He had lost a large amount of money.

I asked him how much.

He hesitated.

Then he said it.

"Thirty-eight thousand dollars."

I sat back.

Thirty-eight thousand.

I had saved money all my adult life.

I knew exactly how much work could be represented by a number like that.

"Does Lauren know?"

He nodded.

"She knows the business failed."

Something in his voice bothered me.

"And what doesn't she know?"

Michael looked directly at me.

"Vanessa thought we could sell the membership."

I didn't move.

The fire made a soft sound behind him.

I stared at my son.

I had known they wanted control of the resort.

I had known Vanessa was preparing paperwork.

But until that moment, I hadn't fully understood what they intended to do once they obtained it.

My daughter wanted my name removed.

My son had lost thirty-eight thousand dollars.

And the place Robert and I had bought to hold our family together had become something they were considering turning into money.

I looked at Michael.

"You planned to sell it?"

He lowered his eyes.

And for the first time that night, I understood why he had come alone.

He wasn't merely apologizing for excluding me.

He was admitting that he had allowed my property to become part of a financial plan I had never agreed to.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: My Son Admitted He Had Helped Hide a
