7 – Beneath the Stained Scrubs Were Parking Stubs From a Luxury High-Rise, and Jennifer’s Hospital Schedule Suddenly Raised More Questions Than Answers

I almost stopped searching when I found the scrubs.

I had already crossed a line I never thought I would cross.

I had opened Jennifer's vehicle while she slept.

I had gone through the area beneath her seat.

I had handled clothing she had kept out of sight.

And I had found a smell I couldn't explain.

That should have been enough to make me step away.

But I was still staring into the space beneath the seat.

I felt there was something I hadn't understood.

Maybe that was just fear.

Maybe I had become so suspicious that I couldn't accept an ordinary explanation anymore.

But I kept looking.

The fabric had been covering part of the space.

When I shifted it, I noticed something else.

Paper.

Small pieces of paper.

At first, I didn't understand what I was seeing.

I reached for them.

They were parking stubs.

I looked at the first one.

Then the others.

They were connected to a luxury high-rise.

I stood completely still.

For a moment, my mind refused to make sense of the information.

Parking stubs.

A high-rise.

Jennifer's car.

I read what I could see.

Then looked at the scrubs again.

The bleach marks hadn't changed.

The strange perfume was still there.

But the parking stubs gave those details a different weight.

I knew Jennifer worked at Mercy General Hospital downtown.

That was her workplace.

That was where she was supposed to spend her long shifts.

I had no reason to connect her hospital schedule to a luxury residential building.

Not yet.

I reminded myself of that.

There were many reasons someone might park near a high-rise.

There were many reasons a nurse might have business outside the hospital.

I couldn't know what the stubs represented just by finding them.

But I also couldn't ignore where they had been.

Under the seat.

Near the clothing.

Out of sight.

I looked at the paper again.

It felt strange to be frightened by something so ordinary.

Parking stubs were nothing special.

People collected them without thinking.

They ended up in coat pockets.

Glove compartments.

Car consoles.

They were often forgotten.

I knew all that.

But these were in Jennifer's vehicle, near clothing she appeared to be hiding.

And I had just watched her change before coming inside.

The connection might have been coincidence.

I couldn't prove otherwise.

Still, I felt something inside me sink.

I thought about our marriage.

About how I never questioned the schedule Jennifer gave me.

She worked four twelve-hour shifts each week.

Seven to seven.

That had been the arrangement for years.

I knew how exhausting it was.

I knew she sometimes needed quiet afterward.

I had always accepted that.

I had never felt a need to track where she parked during the day.

Why would I?

She was my wife.

I trusted her.

Now I was holding parking records that suggested there were places connected to her days that I knew nothing about.

That was all I could safely conclude.

Nothing more.

But even that hurt.

I looked toward the house.

Jennifer was upstairs.

Asleep.

Unaware that I had found the clothes and the stubs.

I felt ashamed.

Part of me wanted to put everything back immediately.

Pretend I had never touched it.

Go inside.

Wait until morning.

Ask her directly.

But I knew I would remember what I had seen.

I knew I would look at her differently.

And I hated that.

I had always thought a marriage could survive difficult conversations if both people were honest.

I still believed that.

What frightened me was the possibility that honesty had already disappeared from ours.

I looked again at the parking stubs.

I wanted them to mean nothing.

I wanted them to be ordinary receipts from an ordinary errand.

Something Jennifer could explain in a few sentences.

But I had no explanation.

Only the paper in my hand.

The stained scrubs.

The unfamiliar perfume.

And Woody's question from breakfast.

I could almost hear his voice again.

Why did his mother change clothes in the driveway?

At the time, the question had sounded strange but manageable.

Now it felt connected to something much larger.

I tried to keep my thoughts from running ahead.

I didn't know whether Jennifer was seeing another man.

I didn't know whether she was going to the high-rise for personal reasons.

I didn't know whether the bleach stains were connected to the building.

And I certainly didn't know why she cried.

I had suspicions.

That was different from knowledge.

I repeated that distinction silently.

I needed to.

Because the easiest thing would have been to put all the clues together and decide I already understood.

A woman staying out after work.

Clothes changed in the driveway.

A fragrance her husband didn't recognize.

Parking stubs from a luxury high-rise.

I knew what story those details suggested.

I didn't want to say it.

Not even to myself.

But it was there.

The possibility of another relationship.

The possibility that Jennifer had been spending time somewhere she didn't want me to know about.

The possibility that she came home crying because she was trapped between two lives.

It made me feel physically sick.

I placed one hand against the side of the car.

I needed something solid.

The cool surface steadied me for a moment.

I thought about Jennifer as a young woman.

The girl I had known in high school.

The person I had chosen to spend my life with.

I remembered the certainty we had shared when we were younger.

We didn't know what careers would look like.

We didn't know how exhausting parenthood could be.

We didn't know how many responsibilities would eventually fill our days.

But we believed in each other.

That belief had carried us through a lot.

And now I was wondering whether I had been the only one still holding it.

I stopped myself.

That wasn't fair.

I didn't know enough.

Finding parking stubs didn't erase thirteen years.

An unfamiliar perfume didn't tell me where it came from.

Bleach stains didn't prove deception.

Even the crying could mean something entirely different from what I feared.

I knew that.

Yet the uncertainty felt unbearable.

I was beginning to understand why people said suspicion could damage a relationship even before the truth was known.

It changed the way everything looked.

I thought about Jennifer leaving for work.

Her familiar routine.

The early mornings.

The long shifts.

The drive home.

I had always seen those things as part of her dedication to nursing.

Now I wondered whether any part of that schedule had been used to conceal something else.

I didn't want to think it.

But I did.

I thought about every evening when she came home tired.

Every time she said the hospital had been difficult.

Every time I accepted her explanation and let her rest.

Had I been understanding?

Or had I been easy to deceive?

I hated that question most of all.

Because it made my kindness feel foolish.

And kindness shouldn't have to feel foolish.

I had taken on more of the daily household work because Jennifer's job was demanding.

I prepared meals.

I organized Woody's schedule.

I drove him where he needed to go.

I never thought I was being taken advantage of.

I thought I was supporting my partner.

That was what marriage meant to me.

If she was hiding an affair, those memories would hurt in a way I couldn't yet imagine.

But if she was suffering through something else, my suspicion would be another burden she didn't deserve.

I was caught between those possibilities.

I looked down at the parking stubs again.

The building they pointed toward was not an answer.

It was a location.

A place I couldn't explain.

And perhaps that was what frightened me.

Until that moment, Jennifer's strange routine had happened inside our own driveway.

Right outside the house.

Now there was another place involved.

A high-rise somewhere beyond the familiar walls of our life.

Somewhere I had never connected to my wife's hospital shifts.

I didn't know what happened there.

I didn't know whom she might have met.

I didn't know whether she had gone there for work, for someone else, or for an entirely different reason.

But I knew the question existed now.

And I couldn't make it disappear.

I tried thinking like the systems architect I had been for fifteen years.

Look at what was known.

Separate evidence from assumptions.

Don't decide on an explanation simply because it fits your fear.

That was the sensible approach.

I needed it.

The known facts were simple.

Woody had watched Jennifer sitting in the driveway for months.

He had seen her cry.

He had seen her change clothes.

I had watched the same routine myself.

Then I had found stained scrubs, an unfamiliar perfume, and parking stubs associated with a luxury high-rise.

Everything beyond that remained uncertain.

I repeated the facts.

I wanted to keep them clear.

Because I was frightened I might eventually say something to Jennifer that I couldn't take back.

I looked toward the house again.

Woody was asleep inside.

He trusted both of us.

He believed we would keep him safe.

He didn't deserve to be pulled into an accusation based on what I had found.

Whatever happened next, I needed to remember that.

He was a child.

He hadn't asked to become part of a problem between his parents.

He had simply noticed his mother crying.

And he had asked his father why.

I felt tears gathering in my own eyes.

That surprised me.

Until then, I had been too tense to cry.

But I suddenly pictured Woody looking out of his bedroom window.

Watching the driveway.

Seeing his mother upset.

And not knowing what to do.

He must have been confused.

Maybe worried.

Maybe frightened in a way he hadn't known how to describe.

I wished he had never needed to ask that question.

But I was grateful he had.

Without it, I might still have been accepting Jennifer's late evenings without a second thought.

I would never have watched the driveway.

I would never have noticed the thirteen minutes.

I would never have searched the crossover.

And I wouldn't be standing outside with parking stubs in my hand.

That thought made me feel both grateful and miserable.

I carefully returned the items to where I had found them.

I didn't want Jennifer waking to discover everything disturbed.

I didn't want to start a confrontation in the middle of the night.

And I didn't want to make a decision while I was frightened.

I needed to think.

That was what I told myself.

I closed the vehicle.

For a moment, I stood beside it in the dark.

The house was only a few steps away.

The same house Jennifer and I had spent seven years making our own.

The same place where Woody built Lego structures on his bedroom floor.

The same place where I prepared meals while my wife worked long hospital shifts.

It was supposed to be a place where we could trust each other.

Now I was standing outside it with questions I couldn't answer.

I went back inside quietly.

I didn't feel relief.

I didn't feel certainty.

I felt as though I had discovered evidence of something important without knowing what it meant.

And that was almost worse than knowing nothing.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: I Returned to Bed Beside the Woman I Loved,
