8 – While I Sat Warm Beneath the Granite, Families in Prospect Were Running Out of Firewood and Beginning to Hear Strange Stories

By the middle of January, I had stopped counting the days since the eviction notice expired.

I still knew the date.

I still understood what Sterling Consolidated believed about my right to remain.

But the calendar no longer ruled every hour of my life.

Winter did.

I rose when there was work to do.

I rested when the weather made outside labor dangerous.

And I kept the stove burning at a steady rate.

The chamber had become familiar enough that I could move through much of it without needing the lamp.

I knew where the food was stored.

I knew which part of the floor remained warmest.

I knew how much wood to put into the stove before sleeping.

I knew the sound of a proper draft through the chimney.

Small knowledge.

Ordinary knowledge.

But it made the difference between living in fear and living with care.

Outside, the cold continued.

The storms had not ended with the great blizzard of December twenty-seventh.

Snow remained deep across the ridge.

The road toward Prospect was difficult.

The highest ground was dangerous even when the sky appeared clear.

I did not travel to town.

There was no reason to take that risk.

I had provisions.

I had my shelter.

And I had no desire to stand in front of the company office and explain why I was still alive on their claim.

I assumed the people of Prospect had forgotten about me.

That was a mistake.

I did not learn the full extent of what was happening in town until later.

But I came to understand that the same winter I had endured safely was making life miserable for people who lived in ordinary wooden cabins.

Many of those buildings had been raised quickly.

The lumber had not always been properly seasoned.

Boards shrank.

Gaps opened.

Cold wind found its way through walls that appeared solid from the street.

Families kept their stoves burning as hard as they could.

But much of the warmth escaped almost immediately.

The colder the weather became, the more wood they consumed.

And the more wood they consumed, the faster their winter reserves disappeared.

I had faced that same problem in the old cabin.

I knew how much labor it took to supply a stove through a long mountain winter.

A pile that looked generous in October could become frighteningly small by January.

In Prospect, people were beginning to discover that their supplies would not last.

The town depended on Sterling's mine.

It had workers.

Boarding houses.

Small stores.

Families living close to the source of their wages.

But being close to the mine did not make the winter less severe.

And the company could not make cold weather disappear.

I thought about those families when I checked my own woodpile.

My shelter had remained above forty-five degrees during the worst of the blizzard.

On ordinary cold days, it often approached fifty.

I used much less fuel than I would have needed to heat an exposed cabin to the same temperature.

That difference had become one of the most important facts of my life.

I could gather wood slowly.

I could rest between trips.

I could keep enough fuel stored to survive another storm.

I could make decisions without being driven into a panic by every falling temperature.

But I did not yet realize how unusual my situation had become.

To me, the chamber was simply the place I had built because there was nowhere else to go.

I had not intended to become an example to anyone.

I had not intended to prove a point to Sterling Consolidated.

I had certainly not intended to attract visitors.

The entire reason for preserving the rockfall around the entrance was to avoid being found.

Yet no stove could operate without releasing heat and smoke.

I had considered that problem from the beginning.

A pipe through the front wall would have been too obvious.

So I had carried the stovepipe upward through the opening in the granite ceiling.

It emerged on the false floor of the draw, among scattered stones and scrub.

Usually, the smoke dispersed quickly.

From a distance, there was little to see.

That had been enough to satisfy me when I first lit the fire.

But in severe cold, even a small amount of warm exhaust could become visible as it met the freezing air.

I had noticed it myself.

Sometimes, when the light was right, a faint pale plume appeared above the rocks.

It rose briefly.

Then the wind pulled it apart.

I did not think much of it.

I knew the chimney was functioning.

I knew the smoke was escaping.

And I believed the formation concealed the outlet well enough.

But the mountains were watched by people who knew them.

Hunters.

Miners.

Men traveling through the wooded slopes for fuel or supplies.

People had spent years learning to notice changes in the landscape.

It was not surprising that someone eventually noticed mine.

The first stories began quietly.

A man claimed to have seen smoke near the old Thorne property.

Another person said there was no one living there.

Someone suggested the sight must have been caused by the weather.

In winter, cold air and sunlight could create appearances that confused even experienced men.

Others treated the story as something less ordinary.

A widow had been told to leave.

Her husband was dead.

Her cabin stood somewhere on the ridge.

And smoke was rising where no one expected a fire.

I later learned that some people spoke of it as if it were a ghost story.

I could almost understand why.

From their point of view, I had disappeared after receiving the notice.

They had not seen me in Prospect.

They had not heard that I had gone to Denver.

They did not know where I was staying.

A few people assumed I had left the country.

Others apparently feared the winter had killed me.

But the smoke remained.

I smiled when I finally heard how people had discussed it.

There was nothing supernatural about my existence.

There was a cast-iron stove.

A granite chamber.

A chimney.

And a woman who had spent nearly all her savings trying not to freeze.

Still, I understood why the stories attracted attention.

The company had expected me to disappear.

And something on the ridge suggested I had not.

Mr. Abernathy heard the rumors too.

People asked him what he knew.

He had supplied the tools and food I purchased in November.

He had given me the cartridges and blasting powder that Elias supposedly had credit for.

He knew I had not bought supplies suitable for a journey.

He knew I was preparing for something.

But he did not know every detail of my shelter.

And he did not explain my affairs to anyone.

When asked about me, he simply said I was capable of taking care of myself.

That was enough.

I was grateful when I learned it.

He could have told people about the heavy tools.

The flour.

The beans.

The rope.

The canvas.

Those things might have encouraged someone to search the ridge more carefully.

Instead, he allowed the questions to remain unanswered.

He had given me assistance without demanding an explanation.

Now he offered me privacy.

I considered that another kindness.

Inside the chamber, I remained unaware of most of the discussion.

My days were occupied by immediate needs.

One morning, I noticed a small change in the way the stove burned.

I checked the chimney and made certain the draft remained clear.

Another day, I spent time inspecting the stonework around the doorway.

The wall remained stable.

The dry-stacked granite had not shifted under the pressure of the snow.

I had worried about that during construction.

Without mortar, every stone depended on the arrangement of the others.

But the thick base and careful fitting had done their work.

The wall was holding.

I checked the clay and gravel around the tin collar.

The chimney opening remained sound.

The smoke continued rising through the pipe.

I recorded those observations in Elias's journal.

They were not the kind of things most people would consider important.

But I remembered how quickly one small failure could become serious in the mountains.

A loose door.

A blocked chimney.

A damaged wall.

Any one of those could make a safe place dangerous.

So I checked them.

I had begun treating maintenance as part of survival.

Not something to do after a problem appeared.

Something to do before a problem grew.

The chamber was quiet during the long evenings.

I read from Elias's books.

Some passages were too technical for me to understand completely.

I worked through them anyway.

I had no one to ask when a sentence confused me.

Sometimes I returned to the same paragraph several nights in a row.

But the ideas slowly became clearer.

I understood more about the way heat moved.

I understood why a large body of stone changed temperature slowly.

I understood why a small enclosed space required less fuel than a large exposed one.

And I understood why the position of the shelter mattered.

The opening faced south.

That allowed winter sunlight to reach it when the snow did not block the way.

The ridge behind it protected the chamber from the strongest prevailing winds.

The floor drained naturally.

The roof was formed by solid granite.

Each feature contributed something.

None of them alone would have made a safe home.

Together, they made the shelter unusually effective.

That was what Elias had seen when he drew the formation.

He had not merely noticed a hole in the ground.

He had recognized how several natural features might work together.

I had supplied the missing parts.

The front wall.

The door.

The stove.

The chimney.

But most of the protection came from the mountain itself.

I found that thought comforting.

I had not defeated nature.

I had learned to work with a small part of it.

One evening, I sat beside the stove and studied the scars on my hands.

They had begun healing.

Some cuts left pale marks.

Others remained darker where the skin had been damaged by cold and rough stone.

I remembered moving the foundation blocks.

I remembered the weight of the oak door.

I remembered the long hours spent striking the ceiling with a steel rod.

At the time, I had thought only about finishing before December fifteenth.

Now I could see what the labor had given me.

Warmth.

Dry shelter.

The ability to remain alive through weather that would have been dangerous in the open.

I was proud of that.

I did not say it often, even to myself.

But I was.

I had spent months feeling as though everything important had been taken away.

Elias.

His income.

My legal right to remain in the cabin.

The certainty that I would have a roof over my head.

Now I had made something with my own hands.

It did not replace him.

Nothing could.

But it proved I was still capable of shaping the life that remained.

The next morning, the air outside was bitterly cold again.

I stepped through the entrance only long enough to inspect the snow and check the surrounding ground.

The mountain was quiet.

I could see no smoke from the town below.

The distance and terrain concealed most of Prospect.

I thought about going there.

Then I dismissed the idea.

I had no business to conduct.

My supplies remained adequate.

The road would be difficult.

And I did not wish to make myself visible to the company.

I returned inside.

I placed another piece of wood in the stove.

Then I opened Elias's journal to a fresh margin.

I wrote the date.

I recorded the temperature.

I recorded the fuel used since the previous morning.

Afterward, I sat quietly beside the fire.

I could not know that a miner named Tom Miller was struggling to keep his own cabin warm.

I could not know that his wife and three children were living through the same cold with far less protection.

I could not know that his youngest child had developed a cough that frightened him.

And I could not know that the family's dwindling woodpile would eventually send him up the mountain.

At that moment, I believed my greatest achievement was that no one knew where I lived.

I had built the shelter to remain unseen.

The people of Prospect had begun noticing signs of it anyway.

And I was about to learn that surviving the winter alone was not the only thing Elias's discovery might allow me to do.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: A Desperate Father Followed the Smoke Above My Hidden Shelter, and I Had to Decide
