help.

I wanted to reach out and take him immediately.

But I knew I had to remain careful.

My body was still recovering from surgery.

And my son was still receiving specialized medical care.

The nurse explained what she was doing.

I listened closely.

Then she lifted him.

My breath caught.

He looked impossibly small in her arms.

I had carried him inside me for thirty-nine weeks.

I had felt him shift and turn.

I had watched my body change to make room for him.

But seeing him outside my body was different.

He was a person.

A tiny person.

With a face.

A mouth.

Little hands.

And a life that had almost been taken from him before it properly began.

The nurse brought him toward me.

I raised my arms carefully.

Then she placed him against my chest.

Warmth.

That was the first thing I noticed.

He was warm.

His skin rested against mine.

His little body moved slightly.

I could feel him breathing.

I began crying immediately.

I had imagined this moment so many times.

But none of those imagined versions had prepared me for how small he felt.

Or how frightened I still was.

I looked down.

His face was close enough that I could see every detail.

His tiny nose.

His delicate eyelids.

The slight movement around his mouth.

I wanted to memorize him.

I wanted to remember everything.

Because only hours earlier, I hadn't known whether I would ever see him alive.

"Hello, sweetheart."

My voice shook.

"It's Mommy."

He shifted slightly.

I held still.

I was afraid of disturbing him.

The nurse reassured me.

She helped support him.

I looked at his fingers.

One hand opened.

Then closed again.

I smiled through my tears.

"You're here."

I whispered it.

Then I said it again.

"You're really here."

I didn't know what else to say.

All the words I had imagined speaking to my newborn son seemed too complicated.

I didn't need a speech.

I needed him to know I was there.

That I loved him.

That I would stay.

I lowered my face slightly.

The nurse helped me maintain a safe position.

I breathed in.

Then out.

My son settled against me.

For a moment, the hospital disappeared.

Not completely.

I could still hear the equipment.

I could still feel the discomfort from surgery.

But my attention narrowed to the warmth of his little body.

I had waited almost nine months for this.

And now it was happening.

I looked toward Warren.

He was standing a short distance away.

His hands were clasped together.

His eyes were wet.

He seemed almost embarrassed by how emotional he had become.

I smiled at him.

"Come closer."

He hesitated.

"I don't want to interrupt."

I shook my head.

"You're not."

He approached carefully.

I watched him look down at the baby.

His face softened.

The worry hadn't disappeared.

But there was something else now.

Wonder.

I recognized it because I felt the same thing.

Warren leaned slightly forward.

"He looks peaceful."

I nodded.

"For the moment."

He laughed quietly.

Then he looked at me.

"How are you feeling?"

I considered the question.

I was exhausted.

My abdomen hurt.

My marriage had been shattered.

I had discovered that my biological father was a billionaire who had spent years searching for me.

And my newborn son was still being treated in intensive care.

I didn't know how to answer.

So I told him the only thing that felt completely true.

"Happy he's here."

Warren nodded.

"Me too."

For a moment, we simply watched the baby.

Then Warren spoke again.

"Natalie."

I raised my eyes.

He looked nervous.

Not like a man negotiating a business agreement.

Like someone asking for something he wasn't sure he deserved.

"Would you mind if I held him when the doctors say it's safe?"

I looked at my son.

Then at Warren.

The question moved me more than I expected.

This man had only just entered my life.

He had missed my childhood.

My birthdays.

My school years.

The ordinary moments that make a father and daughter familiar with each other.

But he was here now.

And he was asking permission to hold his grandson.

I nodded.

"Of course."

His eyes filled again.

"Thank you."

I smiled.

"You don't have to thank me for wanting to know him."

Warren looked away for a moment.

I could tell he was struggling with emotion.

Then he said something very quietly.

"I missed the chance to hold you."

I felt my throat tighten.

I didn't know what to say.

There was no simple answer.

We couldn't go backward.

He couldn't hold the baby I had been.

He couldn't attend the birthdays he had missed.

He couldn't sit beside Aunt Ruth while she raised me.

Those years were gone.

But he could be here now.

I looked down at my son.

"Then you can hold him."

Warren nodded.

I saw a tear move down his cheek.

He didn't wipe it away.

Neither did I.

The ten minutes passed more quickly than I wanted.

I tried not to watch the clock.

I tried to concentrate on the baby.

His warmth.

His breathing.

His tiny movements.

But I knew the time was limited.

The nurse returned when the supervised contact period ended.

I wanted to ask for another minute.

Then another.

Then an hour.

I wanted to keep him against me until he no longer needed the incubator.

But I understood that his medical care came first.

I kissed him gently.

"Mommy's staying nearby."

The nurse lifted him carefully.

I watched every movement.

I couldn't look away.

When he was returned to the incubator, I felt suddenly empty.

Not the same emptiness I had felt when I woke after surgery.

This was different.

I knew he was alive.

I knew where he was.

I knew the medical team was helping him.

But I already missed the warmth of his body against mine.

The nurse noticed.

She spoke gently.

She reminded me that there would be more opportunities as his condition improved.

I nodded.

I wanted to believe that.

I needed to.

Warren stood beside me.

He didn't rush me.

He didn't suggest we leave.

He waited while I looked through the incubator and spoke softly to my son.

I told him I was proud of him.

I told him to keep getting stronger.

I told him I would be there when he opened his eyes.

Then I fell silent.

My son rested beneath the clear surface.

The monitoring equipment continued its steady work.

I pressed my palm against the incubator one last time.

I was still afraid.

But the fear no longer felt quite as overwhelming.

I had held him.

He had been warm.

He had moved against me.

Those details were real.

I could carry them with me.

A little later, Dr. Reyes spoke with us again.

He explained that my son's oxygen levels continued to improve.

There were still reasons to monitor him carefully.

His breathing needed support.

The team wasn't ready to discuss discharge.

But his progress was encouraging.

I listened to every word.

Warren asked a few careful questions.

He didn't interrupt.

He didn't pretend to understand the medical details better than the doctor.

He simply wanted to know how his grandson was doing.

I watched him.

I wondered whether Vance would have behaved the same way.

The thought hurt.

I tried to push it aside.

I wanted to concentrate on my son.

But my husband was part of this story whether I wanted him to be or not.

He was the baby's father.

He had known I was in trouble.

He had heard me say the baby wasn't moving.

And he had chosen not to come.

I looked toward the entrance.

I didn't know why.

Perhaps I expected him to appear.

Perhaps some part of me still believed that becoming a father would change him.

But the doorway remained empty.

Warren noticed me looking.

He didn't say anything.

I was grateful.

I didn't want to talk about Vance.

Not while my son was finally making progress.

I wanted a little more time without having to think about the man who had hurt me.

We stayed in the neonatal unit for a while longer.

I watched the nurses move between the babies.

I listened to the soft sounds around us.

I studied the equipment beside my son's incubator.

Then fatigue began catching up with me.

My shoulders ached.

My abdomen hurt.

The wheelchair suddenly felt uncomfortable.

I didn't want to admit I needed rest.

I was afraid that leaving the room meant leaving my son.

Warren seemed to understand.

"You can come back."

I looked at him.

"I know."

But my voice shook.

He nodded.

"He's being watched carefully."

I looked at the nurses.

They were attentive.

Calm.

Focused.

I knew he was right.

Still, I didn't move.

Not yet.

Then I heard footsteps approaching behind us.

At first, I assumed it was another member of the medical staff.

People had been moving through the unit all morning.

I didn't turn immediately.

I was looking at my son.

Then a familiar voice spoke.

"Natalie."

My whole body went still.

I knew that voice.

I had spent seven years listening to it.

I knew how it sounded when Vance was pleased.

When he was tired.

When he wanted something.

When he believed someone had disappointed him.

I turned slowly.

And there he was.

My husband.

Standing inside the neonatal intensive care unit.

He was wearing a neatly pressed business suit.

His hair was arranged carefully.

His expression looked concerned.

Almost perfectly concerned.

I stared at him.

I remembered the sound of champagne glasses.

Diane's voice.

His irritated sigh.

The moment he told me to arrange transportation to Harborview.

The moment the call ended.

I remembered crawling toward the front door.

Reaching for the brass lock.

Dialing 911.

I remembered Warren kneeling beside me in a wet coat.

I remembered the ambulance.

The operating room.

The alarm.

And now Vance was standing in front of me as though he had arrived at an ordinary family visit.

He moved closer.

"Natalie, thank God you're all right."

I didn't answer.

He looked toward the incubator.

Then back at me.

"I've been worried sick."

The words sounded familiar.

Not because he had said them before.

Because they were the sort of words I had once wanted to hear from him.

I had imagined him arriving at the hospital frightened and apologetic.

I had imagined him explaining that he had made a terrible mistake.

I had imagined him looking at our son and finally understanding what he had risked.

But the man standing in front of me didn't look like someone who had spent the night desperately searching for his wife.

He looked composed.

Careful.

Prepared.

And when he spoke again, something inside me changed.

"I've been trying to find you."

I stared at him.

Trying to find me.

I could still hear the call in my memory.

I had told him exactly where I needed to go.

Harborview.

He had been the one who told me to get there.

He knew I was pregnant.

He knew I was experiencing a medical emergency.

He knew our son wasn't moving normally.

And now he wanted me to believe he had been searching for us.

I looked at his face.

I waited for some sign that he understood how unbelievable his words sounded.

There was none.

He took another step.

"Natalie, I was so relieved when I heard you were recovering."

I didn't move.

I didn't reach for him.

I didn't offer the smile I would once have given him automatically.

For the first time in our marriage, I didn't feel responsible for making him comfortable.

I looked toward the incubator.

Our son was lying beneath the clear surface.

Breathing with assistance.

Surrounded by the equipment that had helped keep him alive.

Then I looked back at Vance.

I wanted to ask whether he had finished dessert.

I wanted to ask whether Diane had enjoyed her birthday.

I wanted to ask how much of the celebration had been worth missing the birth of his son.

But I couldn't make myself speak.

My anger was too large.

My exhaustion was too deep.

And my son was too close.

I wouldn't turn that room into another place where Vance could argue about my feelings.

Warren moved beside my wheelchair.

I hadn't seen him step forward.

But suddenly he was there.

Calm.

Quiet.

His expression had changed.

The tenderness I had seen when he looked at my son was gone.

In its place was the controlled seriousness I recognized from photographs of Sterling's corporate meetings.

Vance noticed him.

I saw the exact moment.

His eyes widened slightly.

His shoulders stiffened.

The confident expression on his face shifted.

"Mr. Sterling?"

Warren didn't answer immediately.

He looked at Vance for several seconds.

Then he glanced toward me.

His hand rested lightly against the back of my wheelchair.

Not possessively.

Not as though he needed to speak for me.

As though he wanted me to know he was still there.

I looked up at him.

Our eyes met.

Silver-gray.

The same unusual shade.

I felt an unexpected steadiness.

Then Warren turned back toward my husband.

"You said you've been looking for Natalie?"

Vance nodded quickly.

"Yes, sir."

Warren's expression remained still.

"That's difficult to understand."

Vance frowned.

Warren continued in a measured voice.

"She told you she was experiencing a medical emergency. You knew she was alone, and you knew she needed to reach Harborview."

Vance opened his mouth.

Warren didn't raise his voice.

"And while she was taken into emergency surgery, you were at your mother's celebration."

The room seemed very quiet.

I looked toward the incubator.

My son was sleeping.

I wanted him to remain undisturbed.

Vance glanced at me.

Then back at Warren.

"Mr. Sterling, that's not quite what happened."

I felt the old instinct rise.

The instinct to explain myself.

To soften the conversation.

To prevent Vance from becoming angry.

But I didn't speak.

I stayed where I was.

Warren looked at him.

"Then perhaps you can explain."

Vance adjusted his jacket.

He glanced toward the medical staff.

Then he looked at me again.

"Natalie was upset. I didn't realize it was this serious."

I stared at him.

He had heard me say my water broke.

He had heard me say I couldn't feel our baby moving.

He had heard me crying.

And now he was telling his employer he hadn't understood the seriousness.

I felt something settle inside me.

Not peace.

Not forgiveness.

Clarity.

For seven years, I had allowed Vance to tell me what he meant.

What he intended.

What I had misunderstood.

Now I remembered every word of that telephone call.

I remembered them clearly.

Warren studied my husband's face.

Then he spoke again.

"There is another matter."

Vance stopped adjusting his jacket.

Warren's voice remained even.

"Two certified letters were sent to Natalie."

I felt my heart begin to pound.

The ivory envelope appeared in my mind.

My name.

The gold lettering.

The hallway floor.

Warren continued.

"Both were intended for her personally."

Vance's expression changed.

It was small.

But I saw it.

His mouth tightened.

His eyes moved toward me.

Then back to Warren.

I had seen that expression before.

Usually when Vance was trying to decide how much information someone already knew.

I looked at him.

For the first time since he entered, I found my voice.

"Where are my letters, Vance?"

He didn't answer immediately.

I waited.

There were so many things I could have asked him.

Why he had stayed at the birthday party.

Why he hadn't called.

Why he was pretending he had searched for me.

But in that moment, I wanted one simple answer.

What had he done with correspondence addressed to me?

Warren remained beside my wheelchair.

He didn't interrupt.

He let the question belong to me.

Vance looked from one of us to the other.

Then he began explaining that he had only wanted to keep me from becoming distressed during the pregnancy.

I listened.

His words were careful.

Reasonable-sounding.

Exactly the way they had always been when he wanted me to accept something without asking too many questions.

But this time, I didn't accept them.

I looked at the man I had married.

Then at our newborn son.

Then at Warren Sterling, who had spent the night beside me after arriving in the rain.

I finally understood that I didn't need to decide the future of my marriage in that hospital room.

I didn't need to answer every question.

I didn't need to forgive anyone.

I only needed to protect the little boy in front of me and insist that the truth be told.

I turned back to Vance.

"Those letters were mine."

He looked uncomfortable.

I didn't raise my voice.

"You should have given them to me."

For once, he had no answer that made me doubt what I already knew.

And for once, I didn't try to find one for him.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: My Husband Tried to Explain Why He Hid My Father’s Letters, but His Carefully Chosen Words Only Made Me Question Everything

The nurse moved slowly.
