Stay where you are."

I wanted to ask how he knew that.

I wanted to ask who had sent him.

But another contraction began.

I gripped my phone.

My other hand moved across my stomach.

I couldn't hide the pain.

Warren watched me closely.

He looked helpless for a moment.

That surprised me almost as much as his arrival.

I had never imagined Warren Sterling being helpless.

Men like him were supposed to have answers.

They paid people to find solutions.

They directed entire companies.

They made decisions worth more money than I could imagine.

But he couldn't stop my pain.

He couldn't tell me whether my son was safe.

And he seemed to understand that.

His face tightened.

"You're going to get medical care."

I tried to speak.

The words wouldn't come.

He took a clean white handkerchief from his coat.

Then he hesitated.

"May I?"

I wasn't sure what he meant until he gently touched the cloth to my forehead.

I nodded.

He wiped away some of the sweat.

The gesture was so careful that I began crying.

I hadn't expected tenderness.

Not after the telephone call with Vance.

Not after being told I was making trouble.

I had been trying so hard to remain calm that I hadn't realized how much I needed someone to treat me kindly.

Warren didn't tell me to stop crying.

He didn't call me dramatic.

He stayed beside me.

I tried to look at him properly.

His face was familiar from photographs.

But those photographs hadn't shown the details I noticed now.

The lines beside his eyes.

The shape of his eyebrows.

The unusual silver-gray color of his eyes.

That last detail caught my attention.

My eyes were a similar color.

It was something people had commented on throughout my life.

I had always assumed it came from my biological family.

I knew very little about that family.

My mother had died when I was young.

And the woman who raised me, Aunt Ruth, had told me that my father had disappeared before I was born.

That was the explanation I had carried into adulthood.

I hadn't liked it.

But I had accepted it.

Looking at Warren, I felt an uncomfortable flicker of recognition.

Not because I had met him.

I hadn't.

But something about his eyes and brows reminded me of my own reflection.

I dismissed the thought immediately.

It seemed absurd.

I was frightened and exhausted.

I was staring at a stranger during a medical emergency.

Of course my mind was searching for something familiar.

Still, I couldn't stop looking.

He noticed.

His expression softened.

For a moment, I thought he might say something.

Instead, he glanced toward the entrance.

There was movement outside.

The dispatcher was still speaking through my phone.

I tried to tell her someone had arrived.

Warren leaned closer.

"Are you talking to emergency services?"

I nodded.

He looked relieved.

"Good."

Then he told me again not to move.

His voice was firm this time.

Not harsh.

Just steady enough that I felt I could follow it.

I tried to ask why he was there.

"Mr. Sterling?"

He turned toward me immediately.

"Yes?"

"How did you find me?"

His face changed again.

He looked down at my hand.

Then at my stomach.

He didn't answer the question.

Not yet.

"Let's get you somewhere safe first."

I wanted to insist.

I wanted an explanation.

But the next contraction stopped me.

I closed my eyes.

The hallway seemed to tilt around me.

I could hear rain through the open entrance.

I could hear footsteps.

Voices.

People moving with purpose.

Warren stayed close.

I felt his hand beside mine.

He didn't grab me.

He simply placed it where I could reach it.

I took it.

His fingers were cold from the rain.

I held on tightly.

He didn't complain.

I remember thinking that Vance had refused to hold my hand when I asked him to come home.

Yet his employer had arrived and offered me his without being asked.

That contrast was too much.

I began crying harder.

Warren leaned toward me.

"You're not going through this by yourself."

I looked at him.

He seemed to be struggling with his own emotions.

His mouth tightened.

His eyes were wet.

Then he said something I would remember for the rest of my life.

He called me his girl.

Not as a casual expression.

Not in the way an older stranger might comfort someone.

He said it as though the words belonged to us.

As though he had been waiting years to say them.

"My girl, I'm here now."

I stared at him.

I didn't understand.

I had never met this man.

I knew his name.

I knew his reputation.

I knew my husband feared disappointing him.

But I didn't know him.

Why was he speaking to me with such affection?

Why did he look as though seeing me had changed something inside him?

The questions came too quickly.

I couldn't sort them out.

I tried to pull my hand away so I could wipe my face.

He released it immediately.

Then he offered the handkerchief again.

I took it.

The white fabric looked strange in my shaking hand.

It was neatly folded.

Soft.

Completely ordinary.

I remember staring at it because it was easier than looking at his face.

I needed something simple to concentrate on.

A piece of cloth.

A breath.

The sound of someone approaching.

Anything that could keep my fear from taking over.

"Natalie."

I raised my eyes.

Warren was still watching me.

"I need you to stay with us."

I nodded.

I wanted to.

More than anything.

I wanted to stay awake.

I wanted to reach the hospital.

I wanted to hear someone tell me that my little boy would survive.

I pressed my hand against my abdomen.

Still no reassuring movement.

Warren saw what I was doing.

His expression tightened.

"Is it the baby?"

I swallowed.

"He isn't moving."

I managed to say it clearly this time.

"He usually moves all the time."

Warren looked toward the entrance.

I saw fear cross his face again.

He didn't pretend to know what the silence meant.

He didn't offer a careless reassurance.

He simply stayed beside me while the medical responders moved in.

Their voices brought structure to the chaos.

Questions.

Instructions.

Information.

They spoke about getting me to Harborview.

I tried to answer when they addressed me.

My name.

My pregnancy.

The pain.

My water breaking.

The change in the baby's movements.

Warren remained close enough that I could see him whenever I opened my eyes.

At one point, I looked toward the hallway table.

The correspondence was scattered across the floor.

The ivory envelope lay near the table leg.

I could still see the gold lettering.

I remembered my name.

The law firm.

The similar letter Vance had dismissed.

I almost mentioned it.

But a medical responder asked another question.

I turned back.

The envelope stayed where it was.

I didn't know that Warren Sterling was connected to the reason it had been delivered.

I didn't know his arrival and that piece of correspondence were parts of the same story.

All I knew was that two very strange things had happened on the worst night of my life.

A letter from an important law firm had appeared in my home.

And my husband's billionaire employer had arrived in the rain, calling me his girl.

I was frightened enough that neither mystery seemed real.

I tried to ask him once more.

"Why are you here?"

He leaned closer.

For a moment, his expression looked almost painful.

As though the answer was too important to give carelessly.

"I'll explain."

He paused.

"I promise."

I wanted to believe him.

But that evening had already taught me how little a promise could mean.

Perhaps he saw my hesitation.

He didn't seem offended.

He only nodded, as though he understood that I needed more than words.

Then he stayed.

He remained close while the medical team prepared to move me.

He listened when they explained what they were doing.

He made room when they needed access.

He didn't interfere.

He didn't make the situation about himself.

For a man so accustomed to having authority, he seemed unusually willing to let others take charge.

I noticed that.

Even through the pain.

Vance had treated my medical emergency like an interruption.

Warren treated it like the only thing that mattered.

As I was prepared for transport, I looked once more at the man beside me.

His dark coat was still wet.

His silver hair was untidy from the rain.

His expensive shoes had been resting on our wooden floor.

Nothing about him looked like the polished executive in the photographs I had seen.

He looked like an exhausted man who had finally reached someone he was afraid of losing.

And I couldn't understand why.

But when I held out my hand, he took it again.

I didn't know his reason for coming.

I didn't know what he wanted to tell me.

I didn't know why his eyes looked so much like mine.

I only knew that he had appeared when Vance refused.

And he had stayed when I needed someone.

Click
