What is it?"

There was impatience in his voice.

I recognized it immediately.

It was the tone he used when he believed I was interrupting something important.

I swallowed.

"I think the baby is coming."

The words felt strange.

For months, I had imagined saying them.

I had thought they would bring excitement.

Maybe nervous laughter.

Maybe Vance grabbing his keys and asking whether I had everything ready.

Instead, there was a short silence.

Then I heard him breathe out.

"Are you sure?"

I wanted to tell him I wasn't sure of anything.

I wanted to say that was why I had called.

But another contraction tightened around me.

I bent forward.

My hand slipped against the edge of the hallway table.

"Something isn't right."

He said my name again.

Not gently.

"Natalie."

I hated the way he said it.

As though my name were a warning.

As though I had already done something wrong.

I tried to explain.

The pressure had become painful.

I was frightened.

And the baby wasn't moving the way he normally did.

That last detail terrified me more than anything else.

Our son had been active throughout the final weeks of my pregnancy.

I had grown used to feeling him shift beneath my ribs.

Sometimes I complained about how uncomfortable it was.

Sometimes I rested my hand against my stomach and waited for him to move again.

Those small movements had become part of my day.

A private reassurance.

A little reminder that he was there.

But now I couldn't feel him.

I pressed my palm against my abdomen.

Nothing.

I waited.

Still nothing.

"Vance, please listen."

My voice broke.

"I haven't felt him move. Something could be wrong."

For a second, I thought that would change everything.

I thought he would hear the fear in my voice.

I thought the music behind him would become unimportant.

I thought he would remember that we were talking about our child.

But he didn't sound frightened.

He sounded irritated.

"Natalie, you're making yourself upset."

I stared at the floor.

I remember that clearly.

The wooden boards beneath my feet.

The way the hallway light reflected against them.

The ordinary appearance of everything around me.

It seemed impossible that our house could look so normal while I felt so afraid.

"I'm not just upset."

Another contraction began.

I couldn't finish speaking.

I reached for the wall.

The pain forced me downward.

I lowered myself carefully, but my knees didn't seem strong enough to hold me.

I ended up sitting on the floor.

My phone was pressed against my ear.

Vance was still talking.

Something about his mother.

Something about the evening.

I didn't catch all of it.

I was trying to breathe.

I was trying to keep my thoughts clear.

Then I felt warmth.

Sudden.

Unmistakable.

My water had broken.

I looked down.

For one foolish second, I wondered whether I had misunderstood what had happened.

Then another wave of pain removed any doubt.

"Vance!"

I didn't care how loud I sounded.

"My water broke. I need help."

I heard him move away from the people around him.

Or perhaps he only covered the phone.

The music grew quieter.

I waited for him to tell me he was leaving.

I waited for the simple sentence that should have followed.

I'm coming.

Two words.

That was all I needed.

Instead, I heard a woman's voice in the background.

Diane.

My mother-in-law.

I recognized her immediately.

She had a particular way of saying her son's name.

Soft at the beginning.

Almost sweet.

Then demanding by the end.

"Vance, darling, what's going on?"

He said something I couldn't hear.

Then Diane spoke again.

Loud enough for me to understand every word.

"Is Natalie trying to make this evening about herself again?"

I closed my eyes.

Again.

That word hurt.

It told me this wasn't simply a misunderstanding.

In Diane's mind, my pregnancy had become another inconvenience.

And my emergency was apparently another performance.

I wanted to defend myself.

I wanted to explain that I hadn't chosen the timing.

That I wasn't lying on our floor because I wanted attention.

That I would have given anything for our son to be moving normally.

But I couldn't get enough air to speak.

Vance returned to the call.

"Natalie, I can't leave right now."

For a moment, I didn't understand him.

I heard the words.

I knew what they meant.

But my mind refused to connect them to the situation.

"You can't leave?"

He sounded tired of the conversation.

"Mom's birthday dinner isn't finished."

I looked toward the front door.

It was only a short distance away.

I could see the brass lock.

The dark wooden frame.

The narrow line of light beneath it.

Outside, the rain continued.

Inside, I was struggling to sit upright.

And my husband was explaining why dessert mattered.

"Vance, I'm on the floor."

My voice was shaking badly now.

"I can't get up properly."

He didn't ask whether I was bleeding.

He didn't ask whether I could breathe.

He didn't ask whether the baby had started moving.

He didn't even ask whether anyone was with me.

He told me to find a way to the hospital.

"Get a ride to Harborview."

I stared at the phone.

I remember moving it away from my ear for a moment.

I needed to see that the call was real.

That his name was still on the screen.

That I hadn't imagined the conversation.

Then I brought it back.

"You're not coming?"

He answered too quickly.

"I'll check on you later."

"Later?"

My voice sounded unfamiliar.

He continued talking.

Something about contacting me when the birthday dinner was over.

Something about not making the evening harder than it needed to be.

I listened.

I tried to understand how the man I had married could say those things while I was frightened for our child.

I tried to find some sign that he was about to change his mind.

Maybe he would hear another contraction.

Maybe he would understand what I meant when I said the baby wasn't moving.

Maybe Diane would finally realize this was serious and tell him to come home.

I waited for any of those things.

None happened.

"Please, Vance."

That was the last thing I managed to say clearly.

I didn't make a speech.

I didn't threaten him.

I didn't accuse his mother of anything.

I begged.

I hate remembering that part.

Not because asking for help was wrong.

Because I was asking the one person who should never have needed convincing.

My husband gave a frustrated sigh.

Then he told me he had to go.

The call ended.

Just like that.

The screen changed.

The music disappeared.

His voice disappeared.

The celebration continued somewhere across Seattle.

And I was alone.

I held the phone against my chest.

I don't know how long I stayed that way.

It couldn't have been very long.

The contractions were coming too close together for me to lose track of time completely.

But those seconds felt different from ordinary seconds.

They stretched.

They gave me too much room to think.

I thought about Vance standing among people wearing expensive clothes.

I thought about Diane receiving birthday wishes.

I thought about glasses being lifted.

People smiling.

Someone bringing out dessert.

I wondered whether Vance would tell anyone how frightened I sounded.

I wondered whether he had already decided I was exaggerating.

Then I pressed my hand against my stomach again.

"Come on, sweetheart."

The words came out as a whisper.

"Please move for Mommy."

I waited.

My eyes stayed fixed on the fabric covering my abdomen.

I wanted the smallest movement.

A kick.

A shift.

Anything.

Nothing came.

I had imagined the day my son would be born so many times.

I imagined holding him while Vance stood beside me.

I imagined the first time he opened his eyes.

I imagined the awkward way new fathers sometimes held their babies, afraid of doing something wrong.

I had imagined happiness.

I hadn't imagined sitting alone on our hallway floor, wondering whether my son was still safe inside me.

Another contraction started.

I reached for the leg of the hallway table.

My fingers tightened around it.

The pain made me curl forward.

I tried to count my breaths.

In.

Out.

Again.

But the fear kept interfering.

I needed help.

Not eventually.

Not after dinner.

Now.

That word became the only thing I could think about.

Now.

I stopped looking toward the phone.

Vance had made his choice.

I needed to make mine.

I was not going to remain on that floor hoping my husband would suddenly become the person I had believed he was.

I had to reach someone who would take me seriously.

Someone who would understand that a pregnant woman reporting severe pain and a change in her baby's movements needed medical attention.

I looked toward the front door again.

Then I began moving.

Slowly.

Painfully.

One hand against the wooden floor.

The other protecting my stomach.

I didn't know what would happen next.

I didn't know whether my son was in danger.

I didn't know whether I would be strong enough to reach the entrance.

But I knew something about my marriage that I hadn't known an hour earlier.

When I begged Vance to come home, he had heard me.

He had understood.

And he had stayed at the party anyway.

Click here to continue reading: PART 2: After My Husband Hung Up, I Crawled Toward Our Front Door and Found an Envelope
