We can talk about the rest later."

I didn't move.

For once, later wasn't good enough.

A representative involved in reviewing the travel arrangements explained that the separate reservations needed to be considered individually.

The resort booking was inactive.

There was also a problem with the payment for the ground transfer.

The flight tickets were still confirmed.

Amber stared at the representative.

"You're saying the resort won't take us?"

The situation was explained again.

I could see her trying to absorb it.

The private suite she had expected was gone.

The special arrangements she had been planning around were gone.

The week she had pictured had changed before it even started.

I felt sorry that things had reached that point.

But I didn't regret refusing to keep paying.

Those were two different feelings.

Bradley looked at me.

"Why didn't you cancel the flights too?"

"I wasn't trying to trap you here."

He blinked.

I continued.

"You can still travel home. You can still book somewhere else. I just won't cover the resort."

Amber turned toward me.

"But we were supposed to have dinner there tonight."

"I know."

"And that suite was meant to face the ocean."

"I remember the room."

I had studied the pictures before making the reservation.

I had chosen the accommodation carefully.

I had wanted the three of us to enjoy something special.

I had imagined breakfast with Bradley.

Evenings together.

Perhaps a few conversations that weren't interrupted by his phone or Amber's complaints.

Those hopes seemed embarrassing now.

Amber's face grew red.

She began talking about how humiliating the situation was.

I listened.

She was upset because the vacation looked different from what she had promised other people.

She was upset because the resort no longer had the reservation she expected.

But she didn't mention the airport.

She didn't mention how she had treated me.

She didn't seem to recognize that I had feelings at all.

I turned to Bradley.

"Do you remember what your father believed about money?"

His shoulders dropped.

"Mom, don't start talking about Dad."

That hurt.

Tom had been his father too.

He had raised Bradley with me.

He had worked long hours to give our family stability.

He had taught Bradley how to ride a bicycle, how to handle tools, and how to admit when he had done something wrong.

Now Bradley sounded irritated by the mention of his name.

I kept my voice steady.

"Your dad believed you could learn a lot about someone by watching how they behaved when money was involved."

Bradley looked away.

"He didn't work all those years so I could spend my retirement trying to keep people happy."

Amber sighed loudly.

Then she made another dismissive remark about my late husband.

I felt my expression change.

That was enough.

I wasn't going to stand there and defend Tom's memory to someone who had never understood what he meant to me.

I wasn't going to explain why a widow still spoke about the man she had loved.

And I wasn't going to beg Amber to show me a little kindness.

I picked up my passport.

"I'm finished discussing this."

Bradley looked alarmed.

"Where are you going?"

"To the place where I'm staying."

He looked confused.

"What place?"

"I reserved another hotel room for myself."

His eyes narrowed.

"When?"

"Before we left Denver."

He stared at me.

"You expected this to happen?"

I thought carefully before answering.

"No. I hoped we'd have a good vacation. But I wanted somewhere else to go if things became unpleasant."

He looked hurt.

For a moment, that almost changed my mind.

I had spent his entire life reacting to that expression.

If Bradley looked disappointed, I wanted to make him feel better.

If he seemed worried, I wanted to reassure him.

But I finally understood that his discomfort wasn't always something I needed to fix.

I had been uncomfortable for years.

He had rarely noticed.

I took a small breath.

"I wasn't planning to punish anybody. I was making sure I had a choice."

He didn't answer.

I walked away.

I could hear him calling after me.

I kept going.

My hotel was much smaller than the resort I had booked for the family.

It overlooked the marina.

There were no enormous crowds moving between restaurants and pools.

No long corridors full of vacationers.

It felt quiet.

That was exactly what I needed.

When I entered my room, I noticed the white curtains first.

They moved slightly near the balcony doors.

Outside, I could see the water.

There were two chairs on the balcony.

I remember looking at them and thinking how strange it was that I no longer had to worry about who would sit beside me.

I placed my suitcase next to the wardrobe.

Then I sat on the bed.

And I cried.

I had held myself together at the airport.

I had stayed calm while the resort problem was discussed.

I had answered Bradley without shouting.

But alone in that room, I couldn't pretend I was fine.

I missed Tom.

I missed the son I remembered.

The boy who used to run home and tell me everything that had happened at school.

The boy who wanted me to watch every baseball game.

The boy who once believed that his mother could solve any problem.

I wondered when he had stopped seeing me as a person.

I thought about the birthdays when I had cooked his favorite food.

The holidays when I had prepared the house.

The evenings when I had kept dinner warm because he promised to visit.

Sometimes he came.

Sometimes he canceled.

I always told him it was all right.

I was afraid that if I complained, he would come even less often.

That was difficult to admit.

I had been afraid of losing my son's attention.

And because of that fear, I had accepted things I should have questioned much earlier.

Bradley needed help with his car.

He needed support when his mortgage became more expensive.

He needed money for furniture.

He needed help with bills that couldn't wait.

I had always been available.

Yet when I needed him to stand beside me at the airport, he chose to remain silent.

It was such a small thing to ask.

Five minutes of loyalty.

A simple correction.

A little respect.

He couldn't give me that.

I opened my purse.

Tom's photograph was still there.

I placed it on the bedside table.

For a while, I sat looking at his face.

I remembered the letter he had left.

He had wanted me to enjoy my life.

He had known I would probably keep taking care of everyone else.

Even after he was gone.

I wiped my cheeks.

"You were trying to tell me, weren't you?"

Of course, there was no answer.

But I felt less alone after saying it.

That evening, I ordered dinner.

Grilled fish.

Vegetables.

A glass of white wine.

Nothing particularly remarkable.

But nobody questioned what I ordered.

Nobody complained about the cost.

Nobody made me feel guilty for choosing what I wanted.

I sat watching the evening light fade over the water.

For once, I ate without rushing.

Then I returned to my room.

My phone had been quiet because I hadn't checked it.

When I finally looked, I saw seventeen missed calls.

Eleven were from Bradley.

Six were from Amber.

There were messages too.

Bradley wanted me to call him.

Then he explained that the resort had confirmed the reservation was canceled and that the original price was no longer available.

Amber sent a message blaming me for destroying their long-awaited vacation.

I read it slowly.

She still hadn't apologized.

She still hadn't acknowledged the way she had spoken to me.

She simply wanted the expensive holiday back.

I considered replying.

I could have explained myself again.

I could have reminded her who paid the twelve thousand dollars.

I could have asked Bradley why he was more upset about a hotel room than what happened at the airport.

But I had already said enough.

I put the phone down.

Then I went to bed.

The next morning, sunlight came through the curtains.

I woke without an alarm.

I wasn't preparing breakfast for anyone.

I wasn't checking whether Bradley needed something.

I wasn't wondering if Amber would criticize my plans.

I ordered coffee and breakfast and carried them out to the balcony.

The water was calm.

I sat in one of the two chairs.

The other remained empty.

For once, that didn't bother me.

I had almost finished eating when my phone rang.

Bradley.

I looked at his name.

Then I answered.

"Good morning, son."

His first question was where I had gone.

I told him I was at my hotel.

He wanted to know which one.

I gave him the name.

Then he explained where they had spent the night.

An airport hotel.

They hadn't been able to use the resort.

Every alternative they considered was either unavailable or much more expensive than they expected.

He sounded tired.

I believed him.

"Mom, we really need your help."

I held my coffee cup.

"What are you asking me to do?"

He wanted me to arrange somewhere for them to stay.

He explained that another five thousand dollars was more than they could afford.

I looked out at the water.

"Then you may need to spend fewer days here."

He sounded offended.

"We can't leave early."

"Why?"

His answer came quickly.

They had already told people they were going to Cabo.

I sat quietly.

That was when I understood something important.

He wasn't only worried about finding somewhere to sleep.

He was worried about how their vacation would look to other people.

I asked him whether he had told his friends who was paying for the trip.

He didn't answer immediately.

I waited.

Then he admitted that Amber had been telling people the vacation was something they had bought for themselves.

I felt a familiar ache in my chest.

"Did you ever tell anyone otherwise?"

He paused.

Then he said no.

I looked at the untouched second chair.

It was a small admission.

But it explained so much.

<a
