I know you're trying."

I stared at him.

Seven years old.

And he was trying to comfort me.

He should have been the one receiving comfort.

I crouched carefully, keeping Danny supported.

"You don't have to make me feel better."

Jake looked confused.

"I know."

I touched his cheek.

"You're allowed to be cold."

He nodded.

"You're allowed to be tired."

Another nod.

"And you're allowed to tell me."

He looked toward Samuel.

Then back at me.

"Even when somebody's here?"

I swallowed.

"Yes."

I knew what he meant.

When visitors came during Thomas's life, the children were expected to behave perfectly.

They were not to complain.

They were not to mention problems in the house.

They were not to embarrass their father.

And if they did, there might be trouble afterward.

I had helped enforce those rules because I was afraid of what Thomas would do.

Now I wondered how long it would take for Jake to believe the rules had changed.

I looked toward Samuel.

He stood near the barn, giving us room.

He seemed to understand that my children needed time.

I was grateful he did not try to win them over with cheerful words.

I did not want another man making promises to them.

I wanted them to see what he actually did.

Will stepped closer.

"Mama, Jake's been cold a long time."

"I know."

"He hasn't said much."

I looked at Will.

"He doesn't have to hide it anymore."

Will frowned slightly.

I could tell he was trying to understand.

Thomas had expected the older children to keep the younger ones quiet.

Will had learned to do that.

Sometimes before anyone asked.

If Sarah began crying, he tried to distract her.

If Jake became upset, he told him to be still.

If Danny made noise while Thomas was sleeping, Will hurried to help.

He had become a little guard in his own home.

I knew he thought he was protecting us.

And often he had been.

But I did not want him to believe every unhappy sound was dangerous.

I touched his arm.

"Will, they can tell me when something's wrong."

He looked toward Jake.

"I know."

"Even if they're upset."

He nodded.

"And even if they cry."

Will looked away.

That last part mattered.

Thomas had hated crying.

He called it weakness.

He became impatient when the children could not stop.

Sometimes his anger only made them cry harder.

I had spent years trying to prevent tears because I knew what might follow.

Now I wanted my children to understand that crying was not something they would be punished for.

I looked toward Maggie.

She was still holding Sarah.

I wondered how much responsibility she had taken on without my noticing.

She had helped with Danny earlier.

She had comforted Sarah.

She had stood in the cold without saying a word.

I called her closer.

"Maggie."

She looked up.

"Yes?"

"You've been taking care of Sarah all morning."

She glanced at her sister.

"She's cold."

"I know."

Maggie tightened her arm around Sarah.

"I don't mind."

There were those words again.

I don't mind.

I heard them from my children so often.

I wondered whether they believed they were allowed to mind anything.

I wanted to change that.

"You can tell me when you're tired too."

Maggie looked surprised.

"I'm all right."

I knew that answer.

It was the same one Will had given.

The same one I had used for years.

I looked at her carefully.

"You don't have to pretend."

Her eyes filled.

She blinked quickly.

I saw her trying to hold back tears.

I knew that habit too.

I had taught it without meaning to.

I reached for her hand.

"It's been a hard week."

She nodded.

"A very hard week."

Another nod.

"And you don't have to act as though none of it hurts."

Her mouth trembled.

Then she pressed her face against Sarah's hair.

I let her.

She did not need to explain herself.

Neither did Sarah.

Neither did Jake.

They had endured enough.

I looked toward Danny.

He was the smallest.

The one who understood the least.

I wondered whether he would remember any of this.

I hoped not.

I hoped his memories of childhood would begin with warmth.

With voices that did not frighten him.

With a mother who could smile without looking over her shoulder.

I wanted those things for all five of them.

But I knew the older children already carried memories I could not erase.

Will would remember the knife.

Jake would remember the shouting.

Maggie and Sarah would remember holding each other while Thomas was drunk.

I could not take those memories away.

I could only give them different ones to place beside them.

That thought stayed with me.

Perhaps healing did not mean forgetting.

Perhaps it meant learning that the frightening things were not the only things the world contained.

I looked toward Samuel.

He stood near Thomas's covered body.

He had not raised his voice once.

He had not approached the children without permission.

He had not acted insulted by their suspicion.

He had simply waited.

I wondered whether the children noticed.

I believed Will did.

He was watching Samuel closely.

Perhaps he was looking for the moment when the stranger would become angry.

I had spent years doing the same thing with Thomas.

I knew how exhausting it was.

I wanted Will to stop.

But I also understood why he could not.

Trust had been dangerous in our house.

He had learned that.

Now he needed to discover whether the lesson applied everywhere.

I could not teach him that through words alone.

He would need time.

I looked at Samuel.

"Mr. Brennan?"

He turned.

"Yes, ma'am?"

"The children aren't accustomed to strangers."

He nodded.

"I understand."

"They may not speak much."

"That's all right."

I hesitated.

"They've had reasons to be careful."

Samuel looked toward Will.

Then back at me.

"I won't trouble them with questions."

I felt relief.

I had not wanted to explain our marriage in front of the children.

I had not wanted Samuel asking why Will carried a knife.

Or why Jake apologized so quickly.

Or why the girls seemed frightened of making noise.

Those things belonged to our family.

At least until we were ready to speak about them.

Samuel seemed willing to leave them alone.

I looked down at my hands.

The cuts had begun drying.

I could feel the skin tightening around them.

I remembered how the blood had spotted the snow when I fell.

I remembered staring at those drops and thinking the earth would take my blood but not Thomas's body.

It had been such a bitter thought.

Now I looked at the same ground differently.

It was frozen.

That was all.

It did not hate me.

It was not punishing me.

It did not care whether I had been a good wife.

It simply required tools I did not possess.

I wished I had understood that sooner.

So much of my life had been spent treating hardship as proof of personal failure.

When crops failed, Thomas blamed himself, then blamed everyone around him.

When debts grew, he made me feel responsible.

When he drank, he acted as though the whole world had driven him to it.

I had absorbed the belief that suffering always meant someone had done something wrong.

But sometimes the ground was frozen.

Sometimes a shovel was not enough.

Sometimes a woman needed help.

There did not have to be shame in that.

I looked toward the grave.

Then at my children.

The thought gave me courage.

I called them closer.

All four older children moved toward me.

I could not gather them into my arms because I was holding Danny.

But I wanted them near.

I looked at Will.

Then Jake.

Then Maggie and Sarah.

"I need you to listen."

They became still.

I recognized the old habit.

Their father had used those words before scolding them.

I softened my voice.

"Nobody here is in trouble."

Sarah looked relieved.

I felt a small ache.

I continued.

"We've had a very hard time."

Will looked down.

"And I know I've been frightened and tired."

Maggie watched me.

"I know I've spoken sharply sometimes."

I looked toward Jake.

"I shouldn't have done that."

He nodded.

I swallowed.

"I want things to be different."

The children were quiet.

I did not expect them to understand everything.

I barely understood it myself.

But I wanted them to hear the words.

"I want you to tell me when you're hurting."

Sarah moved closer.

"I want you to ask questions."

Jake looked up.

"And I want you to know you don't have to be afraid of making mistakes."

Will glanced toward the barn.

I knew he was thinking about Thomas.

So was I.

I took a breath.

"Your father isn't here to frighten you anymore."

The words felt enormous.

For years, speaking so plainly would have been dangerous.

Now Thomas lay beneath the canvas.

He could not hear us.

He could not interrupt.

He could not punish me for telling the truth.

I looked at the children.

"I don't know everything that's going to happen next."

Will nodded slowly.

"But I know we're going to stay together."

Maggie reached for Sarah's hand.

Jake moved closer to Will.

"And I'm going to keep trying to make things better."

I looked at their faces.

I wanted to promise more.

Warm rooms.

Full plates.

Peaceful nights.

A future without fear.

But I could not make those promises yet.

I could only tell them what I intended to do.

I looked toward Samuel.

He had turned slightly away, giving us privacy.

I noticed.

Again.

Such a small courtesy.

Yet it mattered.

I had spent years being unable to finish a conversation without Thomas deciding whether it was worth hearing.

Now a stranger was allowing me to speak to my children without interruption.

I wanted to remember that.

I looked at Will.

His shoulders seemed less rigid.

Jake stood beside him.

Maggie and Sarah remained close.

Danny rested against me.

For a moment, we were simply a family standing together.

Not hiding.

Not apologizing.

Not waiting for anger.

The cold was still dangerous.

The grave remained unfinished.

But my children had heard something they had needed to hear for a long time.

Their voices mattered.

Their feelings mattered.

And their mother was finally willing to say so aloud.

<a
