6 – The Stranger Had Offered My Children a Warm House, but I Could Not Stop Thinking About the Home Their Father Had Made Us Fear

I had spent years wishing I could walk away from our house.

Now that I was free to consider leaving it, my feet seemed unwilling to move.

That was something I had not expected.

I had imagined freedom would feel simple.

A door opening.

A weight lifting.

The end of a long, miserable season.

Instead, freedom frightened me.

I looked toward the house and thought of everything inside it.

The kitchen table.

The stove.

The floorboards Thomas had crossed so many nights.

The room where Will had learned to listen for danger.

The beds where my children slept.

The little pieces of ordinary life that remained despite everything.

I did not love the house in the way I once had.

But it was familiar.

And familiarity can feel like safety, even when it has never truly kept you safe.

Samuel stood near his horse.

He was allowing me time to think.

I knew we could not remain in the yard much longer.

Danny was still pressed against my chest.

Jake's nose had begun running from the cold.

Maggie kept rubbing Sarah's arms.

Will watched Samuel as carefully as ever.

I felt their need pulling at me.

The children could not wait for me to become brave.

They needed me to act while I was still afraid.

I looked down at Danny.

His tiny face was partly hidden beneath my coat.

I moved the fabric carefully to check him.

I wanted him to be warm.

I wanted all of them to be warm.

That was such a small wish.

Yet it had become the most urgent thing in the world.

“Mama?”

Will was looking at the house.

“What happens to our things?”

I followed his gaze.

I knew why he asked.

He had watched Thomas sell the milk cow.

He had learned that possessions could disappear without warning.

He had seen how quickly something we depended on could be taken away.

Now a stranger had offered us shelter.

Will wanted to know what that meant.

“I haven't forgotten our things,” I told him.

He looked relieved.

Then uncertain.

“Are we leaving for good?”

I looked toward Samuel.

The man had promised a warm place.

Nothing more.

He had not told me what our lives would become.

He had not promised land.

He had not promised money.

He had not promised to rescue us from every hardship.

I was grateful he had not.

I had heard enough grand promises to last a lifetime.

“I don't know what comes after this,” I said.

Will stared at me.

I knew he wanted certainty.

I wanted it too.

But I could not give him what I did not have.

“I know what we need to do first.”

He waited.

“Get everybody warm.”

He nodded.

That answer was enough for the moment.

I looked toward Maggie.

She had been quiet for so long that I worried about her.

She was holding herself very straight.

I knew that posture.

I had seen it when Thomas was in a bad mood.

She was trying to be useful.

Trying not to become another problem.

“Maggie,” I said.

She looked up.

“You've done enough standing out here.”

She glanced at Sarah.

“I'm helping her.”

“I know you are.”

Maggie's eyes moved toward Danny.

“And the baby?”

“I've got him.”

She looked relieved.

Then almost guilty for feeling relieved.

I recognized that too.

In our house, even resting could feel selfish.

I wanted the children to stop measuring their worth by how much hardship they could endure.

I wanted them to know that being tired was not a failure.

I wanted to teach them that asking for help did not make a person weak.

But I had only just begun learning those things myself.

I looked at Samuel again.

He was watching the sky.

The clouds had moved farther across the northern horizon.

I wondered whether he was concerned about the weather.

He had said his ranch lay eight miles away.

Eight miles could feel like nothing on a pleasant day.

In this cold, with five children, it sounded much farther.

I knew the prairie could become dangerous quickly.

I had lived through enough winters to understand that.

I did not want to exchange one danger for another.

But remaining where we were was dangerous too.

That was the truth I kept returning to.

I could stay with what I knew.

Or I could accept help from someone I did not know.

Neither choice was without risk.

Samuel looked toward me.

“Ma'am?”

I straightened.

“Yes?”

“Are you all right?”

I almost laughed.

It was such a simple question.

I had no idea how to answer it.

My husband was lying dead behind the barn.

My hands were bleeding.

My children were freezing.

I had not slept properly in days.

I did not know how we would survive the coming winter.

Was I all right?

No.

Of course I wasn't.

But Thomas had asked that question before.

Usually when he wanted me to say everything was fine.

Usually when he could see that it wasn't.

I had learned to answer quickly.

“Yes.”

The word nearly came out by habit.

I stopped myself.

Then I looked at Samuel.

“I'm tired,” I said.

He nodded.

“I can see that.”

I waited for him to add something.

He did not.

I found myself speaking again.

“I've been trying to dig that grave since the day Thomas died.”

Samuel glanced toward the hole.

“I figured it had taken some time.”

“The ground wasn't this hard at first.”

“No?”

I shook my head.

“I thought I could finish before it froze.”

He listened.

“I kept thinking one more hour would do it.”

I looked at my hands.

“Then one more day.”

Samuel said nothing.

“I didn't want him lying there.”

“I understand.”

I looked up sharply.

Did he understand?

Could any stranger understand what it meant to bury a man you were relieved to have lost?

Could he understand the shame of praying over someone without wanting him back?

I nearly asked.

Instead, I looked away.

Samuel had not claimed to know every part of my life.

He was only acknowledging what I had told him.

I had become so accustomed to defending myself that even simple agreement could make me suspicious.

I felt ashamed of that.

Not because caution was wrong.

Caution had helped me survive.

But I did not want every ordinary conversation to become a battle.

I looked at the grave.

Then at the barn.

The canvas still covered Thomas.

I wondered what he would say if he could see Samuel standing there.

I knew what he would have accused me of.

I knew the names he might have used.

A strange man on our property.

A strange man offering me shelter.

A strange man helping with work Thomas had left unfinished.

The thought made my stomach tighten.

Then I remembered something.

Thomas could no longer speak.

He could no longer decide who came through our gate.

He could no longer threaten me for accepting help.

I had spent six days grieving the destruction he had left behind.

But I had not fully understood that his power over my choices had ended.

I looked toward Will.

He was standing with one hand near the knife.

His father's knife.

A thing that had once belonged to Thomas was now hanging from our son's belt.

I wondered whether Will felt safer because he carried it.

I wondered whether he understood why I hated seeing it there.

I called him closer.

He stepped beside me.

“Will, look at me.”

He did.

“You don't have to decide whether that man is dangerous all by yourself.”

He frowned.

“I know.”

I could tell he did not believe it.

“You've been trying to look after everybody.”

He lowered his eyes.

“Somebody has to.”

The words nearly stopped my breath.

Somebody has to.

That was what I had told myself for years.

When Thomas was drunk.

When the food ran low.

When the children needed something.

When the work piled up.

Somebody has to.

I had thought that burden belonged to me.

Now I heard my son carrying it.

I touched his shoulder.

“I'm still your mother.”

He looked up.

“I know, Mama.”

“And you're still my boy.”

He said nothing.

“You can help me. But you don't have to become a grown man today.”

His mouth tightened.

He looked toward Samuel.

“What if something happens?”

“Then we'll deal with it.”

He did not seem satisfied.

Neither was I.

But it was the best truth I could offer.

I looked at the knife.

“Keep it put away.”

He nodded.

I held his gaze another moment.

Then I let him step back.

The children were listening.

I had not intended to make a speech.

I only wanted Will to understand that the whole family did not rest on his shoulders.

But perhaps that was something all five of them needed to hear.

I turned toward Maggie and Sarah.

“We're going to accept Mr. Brennan's help.”

Sarah looked at Samuel.

“Is he taking us away?”

I crouched as carefully as I could.

“He's offering us somewhere warm.”

“Where?”

“He said he has a ranch north of here.”

She looked frightened.

I knew she did not understand what that meant.

I did not understand much more than she did.

So I kept my answer simple.

“We're going to stay together.”

She looked at Danny.

“All of us?”

“All five of you. And me.”

Her expression softened.

That was the promise I could make.

Whatever else happened, I would not willingly separate from my children.

I had spent too many years watching them cling to each other during Thomas's angry evenings.

I would not trade one kind of fear for another.

Samuel was still near his horse.

He had heard some of what I said.

I looked at him.

“They stay with me.”

He nodded.

“Of course.”

I waited for him to sound impatient.

He did not.

I waited for him to remind me that he was doing us a favor.

He did not.

He seemed to understand that I needed to hear the answer more than once.

I looked toward the house again.

Part of me wanted to run inside and shut the door.

To tell myself that accepting help had been a mistake.

To try the shovel again tomorrow.

To pretend I could find a way without depending on anyone.

But I remembered Danny's blue lips.

I remembered Sarah crying from exhaustion.

I remembered Jake apologizing for telling the truth.

And I remembered Will standing beside me with a knife.

I could not take them back into the same fear simply because it was familiar.

I looked toward the barn.

Thomas's body still waited.

I had not forgotten my duty to bury him.

I had not abandoned the grave.

I had simply accepted that finishing it would require something beyond my own strength.

I turned back to Samuel.

“There's something I need you to understand.”

He looked at me.

“These children have had enough fear.”

His face remained serious.

“I hear you.”

“I won't let them be frightened into obedience anymore.”

He nodded once.

I looked at Will.

Then at the other children.

For the first time, I was speaking aloud a decision I should have made years earlier.

Thomas had left us with too little money.

Too little food.

Too much fear.

But I would not allow fear to be the only thing we carried into the future.

I took a slow breath.

The air burned in my throat.

Then I looked toward the ridge where Samuel had first appeared.

I still did not know what lay beyond it.

But I was beginning to understand that the life Thomas had given us was not the only life my children might have.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: My Son Had Learned to Protect Us from His Own Father, and I Feared He Would Never Believe That a Man Could Help Without Hurting Us

I had spent years wishing I could walk away from our house.
