5 – I Had Finally Accepted Help from a Stranger, but Watching Him Approach My Husband’s Body Brought Back Every Fear I Thought Death Had Ended

I had never liked watching another person take charge of something that belonged to my family.

Thomas had made certain of that.

When he was alive, help usually came with orders.

A man would decide what needed doing.

Then I would be expected to agree.

If I questioned him, there would be trouble.

So when Samuel Brennan stepped toward the old canvas behind our barn, my first instinct was to stop him.

I almost called out.

I almost told him to leave everything alone.

But I had already given him permission.

And Thomas still needed to be buried.

I stood beside the shallow grave with the shovel resting against my leg.

The handle was rough beneath my injured fingers.

I could feel blood drying across my knuckles.

I could also feel Will watching me.

He had not moved far from my side.

The hunting knife remained tucked into its sheath.

I wished he had never found it.

I wished he had never believed he might need it.

Samuel bent beside the canvas.

He moved carefully.

There was no disgust in his face.

He did not turn away from the body.

He did not make some foolish remark about the smell.

He simply looked at what needed to be done.

That was strange to me.

Thomas could turn even a simple chore into an argument.

If a fence needed repairing, he might complain about the weather.

If the woodpile needed stacking, he might curse the tools.

If I reminded him that something was unfinished, he might accuse me of criticizing him.

Samuel did none of those things.

He looked toward the hole I had made.

Then toward the ground surrounding it.

I knew what he was thinking.

The grave was too shallow.

The earth was frozen.

My shovel was not enough.

He did not need to say any of that aloud.

I had spent six days proving it.

I shifted Danny higher against my chest.

The baby was still cold.

His little face frightened me.

I brought my coat around him and pressed my cheek against his forehead.

He needed warmth.

That was the only thing that mattered.

Yet part of me remained fixed on the man beside the barn.

I could not stop watching.

Will noticed.

“Mama?”

I looked down.

“What is it?”

“Are we going with him?”

I knew he meant Samuel.

I knew he had heard the offer of a warm house eight miles north.

I also knew he had heard every warning I had given the stranger.

“I haven't decided everything yet,” I said.

Will glanced toward Samuel.

“You said he could help.”

“Yes.”

“Does that mean we can trust him?”

I felt the question settle heavily inside me.

I wanted to give my son an answer that would make him feel safe.

I wanted to tell him there was nothing left to fear.

But I had spent too many years believing things simply because I needed them to be true.

“I don't know him well enough to say that,” I answered.

Will looked down.

Then he nodded.

I touched his shoulder.

“But I'm going to be careful.”

He looked at Danny.

“I can help you carry him.”

“You already have.”

“I don't mind.”

That nearly broke my heart.

He never seemed to mind.

He did not mind carrying his brother.

He did not mind going without.

He did not mind standing guard beside his mother.

He had learned that saying he minded would only add another burden to the house.

I wanted him to learn something else.

I wanted him to understand that he was allowed to be tired.

“You can rest your arms,” I told him.

He looked at me as though he had not considered that possibility.

Then he stepped back.

Only a little.

Still close enough to reach us if anything happened.

I looked toward Jake.

He had remained quiet since Samuel arrived.

His red nose and stiff fingers made him look smaller than seven.

“Come closer, sweetheart.”

He obeyed.

I moved Danny slightly and reached for Jake with my free hand.

He looked at my knuckles.

“Mama, you're bleeding.”

“I know.”

“Does it hurt?”

I almost said no.

That was what I always said.

I had told my children I was fine when I wasn't.

I had smiled through pain.

I had hidden bruises.

I had made excuses for things they already understood.

For once, I wanted to give him the truth.

“Yes,” I said. “A little.”

Jake studied my hand.

“Will it get better?”

“I believe it will.”

He nodded.

Then he looked toward the barn.

“Will Pa stay out there?”

I knew why he asked.

Six days had passed.

Six mornings of seeing that canvas from the house.

Six evenings of knowing their father was still behind the barn.

There was nothing ordinary about that.

Children should not have to live beside an unfinished burial.

“No,” I said. “We're going to put him in the ground properly.”

Jake looked at Samuel.

“Is that man going to do it?”

“He's going to help.”

“Why?”

I could have repeated Samuel's explanation.

I could have told Jake that the stranger had known what it meant to wait for help.

But the story did not belong to me.

And I did not understand it myself.

“He saw we needed a hand,” I answered.

Jake considered that.

Then he looked at the shovel.

“Is he stronger than you?”

I almost smiled.

“He has better tools.”

Jake nodded seriously.

He seemed satisfied by that.

I wished I could be as easily satisfied.

Samuel straightened beside the canvas.

He looked toward me.

I braced myself without meaning to.

I expected another instruction.

Another reminder that I could not finish the work alone.

Instead, he spoke quietly.

“I'll need to bring my equipment.”

I nodded.

“The ground won't give much without it,” he added.

“I know.”

He looked at the shovel.

Then at my hands.

I saw his eyes settle briefly on the cuts.

He did not comment.

I was grateful.

If he had told me to stop hurting myself, I might have become angry again.

Not because he would have been wrong.

Because I had reached the point where any kindness felt like criticism.

Samuel glanced toward the sky.

The northern clouds had grown thicker.

I had been watching them all morning.

They frightened me.

Another hard freeze would make the earth even more difficult.

Another night outside would mean Thomas remained beneath the canvas.

I could not bear the thought.

“Can it be done tomorrow?” I asked.

Samuel looked toward the grave.

“With the right tools, there's a better chance.”

He did not promise what he could not know.

That was another thing I noticed.

Thomas had always promised the impossible.

He would repair the fence tomorrow.

He would stop drinking after the next bottle.

He would make up the money when the crops improved.

He would never raise his hand again.

I had lived on promises for years.

Samuel gave me an answer instead.

A better chance.

That was all.

And somehow, I trusted those words more than certainty.

Maggie came closer with Sarah beside her.

The girls were shivering.

I looked at their faces.

Maggie's lips were pressed together as though she were trying not to complain.

Sarah rubbed her hands against her sleeves.

I felt ashamed.

I had been so concerned about Thomas's body that I had allowed my living children to stand in weather they could barely endure.

I looked toward the house.

It was the only home they knew.

It was also the place where they had learned to be afraid.

I wondered how a building could hold so much misery.

The roof had sheltered us.

The walls had kept out some of the wind.

Yet there had been nights when the children felt safer outside a room than inside it.

I remembered standing near the bedroom door, listening for Thomas.

I remembered waiting for his breathing to become heavy enough that I could move without waking him.

I remembered the sound of that loose floorboard.

Will knew the sound too.

He had learned to step around it.

That thought made my chest tighten.

“Mama?”

It was Sarah.

I looked down.

“Are we in trouble?”

I stared at her.

“No, sweetheart.”

She glanced toward Samuel.

“Because that man came?”

“No.”

“Pa didn't like people coming here.”

I knew that.

Thomas did not like strangers seeing our poverty.

He did not like questions.

He did not like anyone noticing that his family was afraid.

Sometimes he became angrier after visitors left.

I had learned to dread the sound of another person's horse approaching.

The children had learned it too.

I crouched as far as I could with Danny against my chest.

“Listen to me,” I said.

Sarah watched my face.

“You haven't done anything wrong.”

She nodded.

I touched her cheek.

“And nobody is going to punish you because someone came to help.”

She looked uncertain.

I could not blame her.

Words alone would not erase what she remembered.

I had spent years trying to make frightening things sound ordinary.

Now I had to make ordinary things feel safe again.

That would take more than one afternoon.

Samuel had remained near the barn while we spoke.

He had not interrupted.

He had not asked why Sarah was afraid.

He had not demanded an explanation for the way Will stood beside me.

I wondered what he thought.

He had seen enough to know we were desperate.

Perhaps he had guessed more.

But he kept his questions to himself.

I was grateful for that too.

The wind rose again.

Danny stirred against my chest.

I looked at his face.

The cold was still there.

I could not afford to stand and think.

I turned toward Samuel.

“The children need to get warm.”

He nodded.

“Yes, ma'am.”

I swallowed.

“I don't want them outside any longer than they have to be.”

“Neither do I.”

I looked toward his horse.

Then beyond it, toward the ridge.

Eight miles north.

That was how far he said his ranch lay.

I had no reason to know whether his house was large or small.

I did not know what waited inside it.

I only knew he had offered heat.

And the children needed it.

I looked at Will.

He was watching my face.

Waiting for me to make the decision.

For once, I did not feel angry about being the one everyone depended on.

I felt frightened.

But I also felt something I had not felt in a long time.

The right to choose.

Thomas was gone.

He could not forbid me to leave.

He could not tell me whom to trust.

He could not use the children to make me stay.

Whatever happened next, the decision belonged to me.

I looked at Samuel.

“I'll accept the shelter you offered,” I said.

He did not smile triumphantly.

He did not act surprised.

He simply nodded.

“All right.”

I tightened my coat around Danny.

“And I want to know where my children are every moment.”

“You will.”

I looked at the unfinished grave.

It was still there.

Still shallow.

Still waiting.

Accepting help had not made the problem disappear.

But it had changed something important.

I no longer had to pretend that the shovel in my hand was enough.

I looked at the split leather on my boot.

At the blood drying across my fingers.

At my five children standing close together.

Then I placed the shovel beside the grave.

It was the first time all day I had put it down without intending to pick it straight back up.

And I knew I needed to leave it there.

<a
