There's no sense in letting those little ones suffer because you won't accept another pair of hands.”

The words cut me.

I heard an accusation.

I heard him suggesting that my pride mattered more than my children.

I wanted to tell him how much I had done for them.

How many nights I had stayed awake.

How many times I had gone without something so they could have it.

How hard I had worked to keep this family together while Thomas tore pieces from it.

But Samuel had not asked about any of that.

He was looking at the children as they stood in the snow.

And I knew he was right about one thing.

Whatever I had endured before did not make them any warmer now.

I tightened my jaw.

“You can go.”

He looked at me for a moment.

Then nodded.

“All right.”

He put his hat back on.

That surprised me.

I had expected resistance.

I had expected him to tell me I was ungrateful.

Thomas would have done that.

He would have used his own offer against me before I had even accepted it.

Samuel simply prepared to leave.

Then he stopped.

“Could I ask you something first?”

I nearly refused.

I was tired of being questioned.

Tired of looking foolish.

Tired of standing over a hole I could not finish.

“What?”

He nodded toward the ground.

“What's the one thing you need taken care of?”

I stared at him.

It seemed such a foolish question.

Everything needed taking care of.

The house.

The children.

The food.

The cold.

The debts.

The man beneath the canvas.

There were too many things.

I could not fix them all.

I could barely manage the next hour.

Samuel waited.

He did not try to answer for me.

I looked down at the shovel.

I looked toward the barn.

Then I heard myself speak.

“My husband needs a grave.”

Samuel nodded.

“Then I can help with that.”

Something moved inside my chest.

I had been working toward that single task for six days.

I had been telling myself I could do it if I tried harder.

I had pushed through pain.

I had split my hands.

I had kept the children waiting.

And now a stranger was standing before me offering to take that weight from my shoulders.

I wanted to believe him.

That frightened me almost as much as the cold.

I lowered the shovel.

“What would I owe you?”

He shook his head.

“Nothing.”

I stared at him.

“Don't tell me that.”

“It's the truth.”

“People don't do things for nothing.”

“Sometimes they do.”

I felt my face grow hot.

I had heard too many promises.

I had spent too many years learning that the price of help often came afterward.

“You're lying,” I said.

Will looked at me.

Samuel did not raise his voice.

He did not look offended.

“I want that man laid to rest, and I want those children somewhere they can get warm.”

I swallowed.

“Why?”

For the first time, his expression changed in a way I could not understand.

He looked past me for a moment.

Not at the barn.

Not at the children.

Somewhere farther away, as though he were remembering something I could not see.

The scar along his cheek seemed more noticeable when his jaw tightened.

Then he looked at me again.

“I once had a time when I needed somebody to come.”

I waited.

He spoke more quietly.

“By the time help arrived, it was already too late.”

I did not know what had happened to him.

I did not know whom he had needed help for.

I did not know whether the memory had anything to do with the scar on his face.

And I was not going to invent an answer in my own mind.

He offered no explanation.

I did not ask for one.

There was something different about that silence.

Thomas had always wanted his suffering recognized.

If he had suffered a hardship, he told it again and again.

If someone had wronged him, he expected the whole house to feel his anger.

He could turn the smallest problem into proof that the world owed him something.

Samuel spoke of pain without asking me to admire him for surviving it.

He did not try to make his grief larger than mine.

He did not use it to demand my trust.

He simply stood there.

Waiting.

I watched him carefully.

He made no move toward the children.

He did not step closer to me.

He had offered help, and he was leaving me the right to refuse.

I was not used to that.

I looked at Will.

His hand remained near the knife.

I wished I could tell him to stop worrying.

I wished I could promise that Samuel Brennan would never hurt us.

But I did not know the man.

I could not make that promise.

I could only decide whether the risk of accepting help was greater than the danger of staying where we were.

Then Sarah started crying.

Not the loud crying of a child who had been refused something she wanted.

It was a weak, tired sound.

She pressed her face against Maggie.

Maggie tried to comfort her without loosening her hold on Danny.

The girls were doing their best.

All my children were doing their best.

I looked toward the baby.

Will had warned me earlier.

I had heard him.

But hearing was not the same as understanding.

Now I saw Danny's face.

His little mouth had taken on a bluish color.

His body shook beneath the fabric Maggie had wrapped around him.

The sight made my stomach drop.

I forgot about the shovel.

Forgot about the grave.

Forgot about every angry word I had spoken.

“Danny.”

I moved toward him.

Maggie looked frightened.

“He's so cold, Mama.”

I reached for the baby.

His skin was terribly cold against my fingers.

I pulled him closer, trying to shield him from the wind.

He was so small.

Too small to understand why we were outside.

Too small to understand death, or fear, or a grave that would not open.

He needed warmth.

He needed it now.

Not when I finished digging.

Not when I stopped being afraid.

Now.

I looked up at Samuel.

He had not moved.

But I saw concern in his face.

I knew what choice I had to make.

I hated that it had taken seeing Danny's blue lips for me to make it.

“If I let you help,” I said, “there are going to be rules.”

Samuel nodded.

“Tell me.”

I held Danny tighter.

“You don't lay a hand on my children without my permission.”

“Understood.”

“You don't decide things for us.”

He nodded again.

I glanced at Will.

Then back at Samuel.

“And if you try to hurt any of us, I'll fight you with everything I've got.”

I meant it.

I had little left.

But I would have used every bit of it.

Samuel's mouth moved slightly.

Not into a laugh.

He seemed to understand that I was serious.

“I believe you,” he said.

I studied his face.

“You're not frightened?”

“I reckon I ought to be.”

For a moment, I almost smiled.

It had been so long since I had wanted to smile at anything a man said that the feeling surprised me.

I pushed it aside.

“And if I decide we need to leave your place?”

“I'll get the wagon ready for you.”

“Even if you don't like my reasons?”

He nodded.

“You won't have to persuade me.”

I looked at him.

I was waiting for something more.

A condition.

A warning.

Some statement that would turn his kindness into a bargain.

Nothing came.

He stood there while I decided.

I looked down at Danny.

Then at the four older children.

Will was watching me closely.

Jake stood with his hands tucked against his body.

Maggie held Sarah near her side.

They looked exhausted.

I knew I had already asked too much of them.

I turned back toward Samuel.

“Thomas can't stay out here much longer.”

“I understand.”

“I want him buried by tomorrow evening.”

Samuel looked toward the sky.

Dark clouds were gathering to the north.

The weather was not going to help us.

If anything, it would become worse.

He lowered his gaze.

“Then I'll need to get started.”

I hesitated.

There was one more thing I wanted to say.

I did not know how.

For years, Thomas had made me feel foolish for needing anything.

I had learned to work through hunger, fatigue, and pain rather than risk asking him for help at the wrong time.

Now I was letting a stranger do something I could not manage.

The shame was difficult to swallow.

I looked at the shallow grave.

Then I stepped aside.

Samuel moved forward.

He did not rush.

He did not act as though he had won an argument.

He walked toward the barn with the same steady manner he had shown since arriving.

I watched him approach the canvas.

Will moved closer to me.

I placed a hand on his shoulder.

He looked up.

I wanted to tell him that he no longer had to protect me.

But the words felt too large.

So I simply kept my hand there.

Samuel bent near Thomas's body.

He took hold of one end of the covering.

His movements were careful.

He did not treat my dead husband as something shameful.

He did not know what Thomas had done to us.

He had heard none of the shouting.

He had not seen the children hide their fear.

As far as Samuel knew, he was helping a widow bury her husband.

I wondered whether he would still show such respect if he knew the truth.

Then I realized it did not matter.

Thomas was dead.

The children were alive.

I could not keep letting the dead man decide what happened to the living.

Samuel looked toward me.

His voice was quiet.

“You've been carrying too much of this by yourself, ma'am.”

I opened my mouth to answer.

I was ready to tell him I had managed worse.

Ready to insist I did not need his pity.

Ready to prove that I was still strong.

But no words came.

Because I was tired.

Because my hands hurt.

Because my baby was cold.

Because my husband had been dead for six days, and I had spent those days trying to finish one task while five children waited for me to make the world safe again.

I looked at Samuel Brennan.

He was a stranger.

I still knew almost nothing about him.

I did not know whether his warm house would feel safe.

I did not know what tomorrow would bring.

I did not know whether accepting his help would turn out to be the right decision.

But for the first time since Thomas died, another adult was standing beside me.

Someone who saw the work that needed doing.

Someone who had offered to do it without asking me to surrender my right to choose.

I felt my eyes begin to burn.

I looked away before the children could see.

I had not cried for Thomas.

I had not cried when I found his body.

I had not cried when I washed his face or pulled the canvas over him.

But standing there beside a stranger who was willing to help, I came closer to tears than I had at any moment since my husband's death.

I understood something then.

I had been trying to prove I could survive alone.

Samuel had not asked me to prove anything.

He had simply offered his hands.

I looked down at my split knuckles.

Then at the children.

I loosened my grip on the shovel.

For once, I allowed myself to accept that I could not do everything.

Thomas still needed to be buried.

My children still needed warmth.

There was still a long, uncertain road ahead of us.

None of that had changed.

But one thing had.

I no longer had to pretend that I was strong enough to carry every burden by myself.

I let the shovel rest against the frozen ground.

And I allowed Samuel Brennan to help.

<a
