3 – When a Lone Rider Appeared Beyond Our Broken Fence, My Eleven-Year-Old Son Reached for a Knife Before the Man Even Spoke

I had learned not to trust an unfamiliar man simply because he spoke politely.

Thomas had taught me that lesson.

I wished he had not taught it to my children too.

The rider was still some distance away when I first saw him.

His horse came over the western ridge at a steady pace.

He did not hurry.

He did not turn toward the house as though he already owned the place.

He seemed to be watching us.

That made me uneasy.

I was standing beside an unfinished grave.

My husband lay under a canvas sheet behind the barn.

Five children stood in the snow.

I did not want a stranger seeing us that way.

I did not want questions.

I did not want someone deciding that a woman alone with five children could be pushed around.

I tightened my grip on the shovel.

“Get behind me,” I told the children.

They moved immediately.

All of them except Will.

He passed Danny into Maggie's arms.

Then he came forward.

He stood beside me.

I felt him close to my elbow.

“Will,” I said.

He did not move.

I looked down.

That was when I saw the knife.

The handle was sticking out from his belt.

I recognized it.

Thomas's hunting knife.

My stomach tightened.

“Where did that come from?”

Will kept watching the approaching horse.

“It was under Pa's mattress.”

I stared at him.

I had not known he had taken it.

I had not known he had been thinking about needing it.

“Take it off,” I told him.

“No, Mama.”

The answer was quiet.

It frightened me more than if he had shouted.

“William.”

He looked at me for a second.

Then his eyes went back to the stranger.

“What if he comes after us?”

I opened my mouth.

Nothing came out.

Will was eleven.

He was standing in the snow with his dead father's knife because he believed someone might hurt us.

And I could not tell him the fear was foolish.

I had been afraid of men myself.

I knew how quickly a quiet voice could change.

I knew how little warning there could be.

I knew what happened when someone stronger decided your wishes did not matter.

But I did not want my son to become a child who reached for a blade before anyone had done him harm.

“Put your hand down,” I said.

He did not answer.

“Keep that knife where it is.”

He glanced at me.

I lowered my voice.

“Don't take it out.”

For a moment, he stood very straight.

His mouth tightened.

There was an expression on his face that reminded me of Thomas.

It hurt to see it.

Then Will looked frightened again.

Not angry.

Not cruel.

Just frightened.

And I remembered that he was still a child, whatever his father had forced him to learn.

The rider reached the damaged fence at the edge of our property.

The fence had needed repairing for some time.

Thomas had never finished it.

Now a stranger sat on horseback beside that broken stretch of wood, looking toward our house.

He was large.

Even before he dismounted, I could tell he was tall.

His shoulders were broad beneath a dark coat.

The coat reached down over his thighs.

A hat kept most of his face in shadow.

I watched his hands.

I watched the horse.

I watched every movement, trying to decide whether he meant us harm.

He did not come riding straight into the yard.

He stopped.

Then he got down.

I saw his face more clearly.

A pale scar ran along the left side, beginning near his temple and continuing down his cheek toward his jaw.

It was the sort of mark a person noticed before anything else.

I wondered how he had gotten it.

I wondered whether someone had hurt him.

Or whether he had hurt someone.

I had no way to know.

He looked at me.

Then at the children.

Then toward the canvas behind the barn.

His eyes stayed there for only a moment.

But I could tell he understood what was under it.

I hated that.

I hated being so plainly helpless.

I raised the shovel slightly.

The stranger removed his hat.

He held it in front of him.

“Afternoon, ma'am.”

His voice was deep.

Calm.

He did not sound drunk.

That should not have mattered as much as it did.

“What are you doing here?” I asked.

He glanced at the ground beneath his boots.

“I've crossed onto your place.”

“I know that.”

He nodded.

I waited.

He did not seem offended by my tone.

That made me suspicious in a different way.

I had known men who became angry if a woman failed to greet them warmly enough.

I had known others who pretended to be kind until they got what they wanted.

I did not know which kind stood before me.

“My name is Samuel Brennan,” he said.

“I didn't ask.”

“No, ma'am. You didn't.”

I felt my cheeks grow hot.

I wanted him to become irritated.

I wanted some sign that would tell me whether to send him away.

Instead, he simply stood there with his hat in his hands.

His eyes moved toward the shovel.

Then the hole.

“That ground looks too hard for a spade.”

I almost laughed.

I had spent six days discovering that fact.

“I've been managing.”

He looked down at my hands.

I realized I was still bleeding.

I pulled my fingers tighter around the handle.

He looked back at my face.

“You won't get much farther with that tool.”

“I'll find a way.”

He waited a moment.

“Not without somebody helping.”

The words struck something raw inside me.

I had been hearing what I could not do for years.

Thomas had made certain of that.

I could not manage money.

I could not keep him satisfied.

I could not understand how hard his life was.

I could not do anything properly.

Now a man I had never met was standing in my yard telling me I needed help.

I knew he might be right.

I hated hearing it.

“I've taken care of things myself before,” I said.

Samuel glanced at the children.

“I don't doubt it.”

His answer was so simple that I had nothing ready to say.

I wanted to argue.

Instead, I stared at him.

He stayed where he was.

That mattered.

I did not recognize it immediately, but it mattered.

He did not walk closer when I was uncomfortable.

He did not demand that I lower the shovel.

He did not tell Will to step away from me.

He did not act as though being a man gave him the right to command the yard.

He let the distance remain between us.

Then he spoke again.

“I run a ranch north of here.”

I said nothing.

“About eight miles.”

I glanced toward the ridge.

I knew there was land farther north.

I did not know Samuel Brennan.

I did not know his ranch.

I did not know whether anything he said was true.

He continued.

“I've got a wagon and a team that can pull through this weather.”

I listened despite myself.

“There's a pick and an iron bar at my place.
