2 – My Husband Had Promised to Save Me from Hardship, but Standing Beside His Unfinished Grave I Finally Admitted What Our Marriage Had Become

I had not cried when Thomas died.

That was the truth I could barely admit to myself.

I had cried during our marriage.

More times than I could count.

But when I found him dead, there had been no tears.

Only a strange quiet.

I remembered the morning clearly.

He had been drinking before breakfast.

That was no longer unusual.

The bottle had become as familiar in our house as the stove or the table.

I knew the sound it made when he set it down.

I knew how his voice changed after the first few drinks.

I knew when to speak and when to remain silent.

So did the children.

Thomas went outside that morning.

He walked toward the barn.

I had no reason to believe it was the last time I would see him alive.

Later, I found him behind the barn near the woodpile.

He was lying facedown.

For a moment, I simply stood there.

I remember waiting for him to move.

Thomas had fallen before.

He had stumbled when he drank.

He had slept in places where no sensible man would choose to rest.

I thought perhaps this was another one of those mornings.

But something about the stillness troubled me.

I moved closer.

There was a bottle in the snow.

I looked at his back.

It did not rise.

I spoke his name.

He did not answer.

I bent down beside him.

His skin was already cold.

I searched for some injury that might explain what had happened.

There was none that I could see.

No blood.

No obvious wound.

Nothing to suggest someone had fought with him.

Only the bottle.

Only the snow.

Only Thomas.

Dead.

I remember kneeling there longer than I needed to.

Not because I believed I could save him.

Because I did not know what I was supposed to feel.

A wife should be devastated when her husband dies.

That was what I had always believed.

I thought I would scream.

I thought I would beg him to open his eyes.

I thought every memory of our marriage would rush through me and break my heart.

Instead, I felt tired.

So terribly tired.

Then I began thinking about the children.

That was the first thing that truly frightened me.

Not the death.

What came afterward.

There was no money to send for the doctor.

The nearest one lived almost thirty miles away.

Even if I could have paid someone to fetch him, there was nothing left to be done.

Thomas had been dead long enough for me to know it.

I could not change that.

I could only decide what happened to his body.

I had washed his face.

I had closed his eyes.

My hands trembled while I did it.

I remember wondering whether my shaking meant I was grieving.

But I knew the difference.

I had spent years trembling around Thomas.

My body had learned fear before my mind learned to name it.

Now I was touching him, and I was still waiting for him to react.

That realization filled me with shame.

He could no longer hurt me.

Yet I found myself moving carefully.

I pulled the canvas over him.

It was the best covering I had.

I made sure it lay properly across his body.

Then I stood back.

I did not tell myself that he had been a good man.

I could not say it.

I had once believed he would be.

That was different.

I had married Thomas when I was nineteen.

At nineteen, I thought I understood enough about the world to choose the man who would share my life.

I knew very little.

Thomas was strong.

He was charming when he wanted to be.

He had an easy smile and a way of speaking about the future that made everything sound possible.

He told me we would have land.

A home.

Children who would never have to worry about having enough to eat.

He spoke of work as though hard work alone could solve every problem.

I believed him.

I wanted to believe him.

I was young, and I mistook confidence for character.

When he took my hand, I thought I was choosing a life that would be better than anything I had known.

In the beginning, there were reasons to hope.

Thomas worked.

He talked about what he planned to build.

He imagined a future large enough for both of us.

I held on to those promises.

For a year, perhaps two, I believed the man I married was the man he would remain.

Then the crops failed.

The money disappeared.

Debts began to grow.

At first, Thomas seemed frightened by those troubles.

He worried.

He became impatient.

He spoke less about the future.

I tried to understand.

I told myself every marriage faced hard seasons.

I thought that if I worked harder, spent less, complained less, I could help him carry the burden.

I did not understand that I was beginning to carry something else.

His anger.

The whiskey came into our home as another problem.

Then it became his answer to every problem.

When there was no money, he drank.

When he felt ashamed, he drank.

When work went badly, he drank.

And when the drinking changed his temper, I learned to stay quiet.

The first time he struck me, I remember being more shocked than hurt.

I kept looking at him.

I could not make the man in front of me match the man who had promised to protect me.

Afterward, he apologized.

I wanted that apology to mean something.

I told myself he was sorry.

I told myself he was under pressure.

I told myself it would never happen again.

I was wrong.

There were more apologies.

Then there were more blows.

Eventually, the apologies stopped.

That happened gradually enough that I hardly noticed when the change became permanent.

I began measuring our days by his moods.

A peaceful morning felt like a gift.

An evening without shouting felt like an achievement.

I mistook the absence of trouble for happiness.

Looking back, that is one of the saddest things I can admit.

I had made my hopes so small that a quiet supper could make me grateful.

Then the children came.

I loved them in a way that frightened me.

They were so completely dependent on us.

I wanted them to grow up believing the world was kind.

But Thomas brought his temper into every room.

He did not always have to shout.

Sometimes the sound of his boots was enough.

Will learned to listen.

Jake learned to apologize.

Maggie and Sarah learned to comfort each other.

Even their silences became careful.

I watched them change.

I kept telling myself I could protect them.

Sometimes I could.

Sometimes I could only stand there and try to keep Thomas's attention on me.

And sometimes I failed.

Three weeks before his death, he sold our milk cow.

He did not tell me beforehand.

That cow was not simply another animal on the property.

She meant milk for the children.

She meant one less thing I had to worry about finding or buying.

When I learned what Thomas had done, I felt sick.

He had taken something we depended on and turned it into money without speaking to me.

Half of that money went into town with him.

I knew what that meant.

I had lived with his drinking too long to misunderstand.

I thought of the children.

I thought of the food we might have had.

I thought of the cold months still ahead.

And I knew that promises made when I was nineteen had become almost meaningless.

I could not eat a promise.

I could not warm a child with one.

I could not fill an empty milk pail with the memory of a man who once spoke lovingly about our future.

Yet I remained.

I remained because there were children.

Because there was land, however poor.

Because I did not know where we would go.

Because leaving seemed as frightening as staying.

Those were the reasons I told myself.

Some were true.

But fear was the strongest one.

I had become afraid of making any decision that Thomas might punish.

Now he was gone.

I was free to make decisions.

And the first decision before me was how to bury him.

I looked toward the canvas again.

The wind had pressed part of it against his body.

I could see the outline of his shoulder.

I remembered when those shoulders had seemed broad enough to carry every worry in the world.

Now the sight made me feel nothing I wanted to admit.

No tenderness.

No longing.

Not even anger as strong as I thought it should have been.

I was relieved.

There.

I had finally said it to myself.

I was relieved that my husband was dead.

The thought horrified me.

I had prayed over him.

I had treated his body with care.

I had done what I believed was right.

But I had not wished him back.

I did not want Thomas walking through our doorway again.

I did not want the children watching his face for signs of anger.

I did not want to hear another bottle strike the table.

That was the truth.

And knowing it made me feel both ashamed and strangely lighter.

I turned toward Will.

He was still holding Danny.

His arms must have ached.

But he had not complained once.

I looked at Jake, whose eyes were still lowered.

Then Maggie and Sarah.

There were five lives waiting for me to choose what happened next.

I had spent so long thinking of myself as Thomas's wife that I had almost forgotten I was also their mother.

My husband had died.

My children had not.

They still needed food.

Warmth.

Safety.

They needed a mother who could speak without making them afraid.

I wanted to be that mother.

I wanted it so badly that my throat hurt.

But wanting something did not tell me how to get it.

I looked back at the shallow grave.

The frozen earth had not moved.

My hands could barely close around the shovel.

I knew I was exhausted.

I knew the children needed shelter.

Still, I could not bring myself to leave the work unfinished.

I told myself I would try once more.

One more attempt.

I placed the shovel against the ground.

Before I could push, I heard Maggie speak.

She sounded uncertain.

As though she was afraid of interrupting.

“Mama, somebody's coming.”

I looked over my shoulder.

At first, I saw only the open prairie.

Then Maggie pointed west.

A horse was moving along the ridge.

There was a man on its back.

And I felt the old fear return before I knew anything about him.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: When a Lone Rider Appeared Beyond Our
