3 – My Father Examined Thirty-Six Payments, and the Bank Details Led Us From a Supposed Mortgage to My Brother’s Expensive Life

My father didn't raise his voice immediately.

That was what made the moment worse.

He sat down with the papers in front of him and asked my mother to explain.

Rebecca wiped her cheeks.

She said the situation had become more complicated than she had expected.

I stared at her.

Complicated.

That was the word she chose.

I had given her six thousand dollars every month for three years.

I had turned down opportunities to travel.

I had postponed moving into my own place.

I had worried over every late invoice.

And now she was talking as though the problem had simply grown beyond her control.

I asked when she had intended to tell me the truth.

She said she had been looking for the right moment.

I reminded her that she had said something similar the Christmas before.

My father's head turned.

He asked what had happened last Christmas.

I explained that I had asked my mother about the mortgage balance.

I wanted to know how much longer I needed to keep contributing.

She hadn't given me a figure.

She had said she would go through everything with me later.

That conversation had ended the same way as so many others.

She told me not to upset my father.

I agreed.

Again.

My father looked at her as though he was trying to recognize the person sitting across from him.

He asked whether she had been deliberately keeping him uninformed.

She said she had only wanted to spare him additional pressure.

He asked from what.

She couldn't answer.

I took another group of papers from the blue folder.

I had printed them three weeks earlier.

At the time, I wasn't planning to confront anyone during Christmas dinner.

I had only begun to notice details that didn't fit.

The monthly confirmations all carried the same recipient information.

The same reference number appeared repeatedly.

But the payments weren't going where I had expected.

I had started checking the information more carefully.

That led me to records showing other financial activity connected to the accounts.

I didn't have a complete picture.

I knew that.

Still, the documents raised enough questions that I couldn't ignore them.

I had intended to speak to my mother privately.

I had even rehearsed what I wanted to ask.

Then Christmas Eve happened.

Now my father was sitting across from me, waiting to see everything.

I placed the papers on the table.

I told him my mother had mentioned personal debts.

She had once explained that she needed to combine several balances and make the monthly expenses easier to manage.

At the time, she insisted the housing payments were being handled.

I hadn't understood how the two matters were connected.

Now I was beginning to.

My father asked what debts we were discussing.

I showed him the records.

There were credit cards.

Personal loans.

Store accounts.

Transfers between banks.

And payments whose purpose wasn't immediately clear.

My mother looked at the documents without touching them.

She said she had made errors.

My father asked how much money was involved.

I turned to the page where I had written the total I could identify.

Approximately eighty-four thousand dollars.

Sebastian leaned forward.

He repeated the figure in disbelief.

My father was silent.

My mother said she had believed she could straighten everything out.

He asked what steps she had taken.

She said she had been working on a plan.

He wanted to know what plan.

Then she looked toward Sebastian.

It was a quick glance.

But I noticed.

My brother noticed too.

He shifted in his chair.

I had spent years watching my mother provide him with things he didn't seem able to afford.

Expensive shoes.

Car expenses.

Money for business ideas.

I hadn't connected those gifts with my monthly transfers.

Not directly.

My mother always described them as separate matters.

She had savings.

She had household money.

She was good at managing the family finances.

That was what I had believed.

Now I couldn't stop looking at my brother.

I asked whether he knew where some of the money had gone.

He looked offended.

He asked why I was dragging him into it.

I told him there were transfers involving an account under his name.

He stood so abruptly that his chair fell backward.

The sound startled everyone.

He said I was accusing him of something he hadn't done.

My father told him to sit down.

Sebastian kept protesting.

He said he knew nothing about my payments.

My father repeated himself, more firmly this time.

Sebastian picked up his chair and sat.

I searched through the folder.

Then I placed a transfer confirmation directly in front of him.

Eighteen thousand five hundred dollars.

The recipient was Sebastian Montgomery.

My brother looked at the amount.

Then at the name.

Then at our mother.

He asked her to explain.

She didn't answer.

He asked again.

Finally, she admitted that she had sent the money because his business had needed support.

I remembered the sneaker venture.

Sebastian had been excited about it.

He had talked about buying and selling collectible shoes and building something profitable.

For a while, it was all he discussed.

Then the enthusiasm faded.

He stopped mentioning it.

I assumed it hadn't worked.

I had never been told how much money had gone into it.

Sebastian said the business had been over long before that Christmas.

I looked at the transfer.

I told him that didn't make the money disappear.

He looked embarrassed.

My father began going through the other records.

He asked how much of my money had been passed to Sebastian.

My mother said she couldn't remember every amount.

I could.

I had spent weeks organizing the paperwork.

Eighteen thousand five hundred dollars had gone directly to his account.

Another twelve thousand had been directed toward expenses connected to his car.

There were also payments to a credit card he used.

I explained what I had found.

Sebastian's face turned red.

He said he hadn't known the money came from me.

I believed he might be telling the truth.

That didn't make the situation harmless.

I asked whether he had ever wondered where our mother got the money.

He said nothing.

I looked at his watch.

I remembered the way he had displayed it during dinner.

I remembered my coat.

And the nights I had worked until my hands hurt.

For years, he had been able to enjoy everything without asking questions.

I had asked almost no questions either.

That realization was painful.

I had allowed my mother to keep financial matters hidden because I believed secrecy was necessary to protect the family.

Sebastian had accepted expensive support because he believed it was there for him.

We had both trusted her explanations.

But only one of us had been carrying the cost.

My father leaned back.

He rubbed his forehead.

He seemed exhausted.

Then he looked at my mother.

He asked whether there was any mortgage on the property at all.

I watched her expression change.

She stopped crying for a moment.

She looked down at her hands.

My father asked her again.

She finally said there wasn't.

He seemed confused by her answer.

He said he already knew the house had been paid off.

I looked at him.

I had heard the words clearly.

But I couldn't make sense of them.

Paid off.

He said the property had belonged to them without an outstanding mortgage for years.

He asked my mother why she had told me otherwise.

Rebecca began shaking her head.

She said she hadn't known how to ask me for help.

The room went quiet.

I looked at her.

All those months.

All those warnings about losing the house.

All the times she told me the bank was waiting.

I asked whether she had invented the mortgage problem.

She said she had been frightened by her debts.

I asked why she had made those debts my responsibility.

She looked at me and said I had been earning enough to help.

That was her answer.

Not that she had misunderstood the payments.

Not that the bank had made a mistake.

She knew I was earning money.

And she had decided she needed it.

My father looked horrified.

He asked how she could justify telling our daughter that the family home was at risk.

She began talking quickly.

There were household expenses.

Sebastian had needed assistance.

He had been busy working.

She had been managing everything alone.

She sounded frustrated, as though we were criticizing her for trying to keep the household running.

My father reminded her that I had been paying for three years.

Then she said I had been living in the house.

I remember that moment more clearly than almost anything else.

She said it as though it settled the question.

I had a bedroom there.

Therefore, in her mind, I owed her whatever she asked.

I looked at her for a long moment.

I thought about all the things I had paid for beyond the monthly transfers.

The property tax shortages she had told me about twice.

The roof work the previous spring.

The heating system when it failed.

The replacement kitchen appliances.

I told my father about them.

His expression changed again.

He asked whether I had paid for the roof.

I said I had.

He asked about the heating system.

I confirmed that too.

He turned toward my mother.

She didn't deny it.

I explained that I hadn't asked to be repaid.

I thought the house was in danger.

I thought helping was the responsible thing to do.

I wasn't proud of how easily I had been convinced.

But I had trusted her.

That was the part I couldn't get past.

My father lowered his head.

For a moment, I thought he might cry.

Then he took out his phone.

My mother immediately asked what he was doing.

He said he was checking the bank information himself.

She told him it could wait.

He refused.

She reached for his wrist.

I watched him gently move her hand away.

He said they had spent enough time handling things without anyone else knowing.

Then he left the dining room to make the call.

I stayed beside the table.

Sebastian was studying the transfer to his account.

He looked up.

He said he truly hadn't understood where the money came from.

I told him that might be true.

He asked why I was treating him like he had deliberately taken something from me.

I said I was only showing what the records contained.

He looked down again.

For once, he didn't have a joke ready.

I sat in silence.

The Christmas music had stopped.

I could hear my father's voice from the next room.

He was asking questions about the property.

I looked at the blue folder.

Then at my mother.

She was sitting very still.

I had spent three years trying to prevent a foreclosure that had never existed.

The house wasn't about to be taken away.

It never had been.

And I was beginning to understand that my mother had been more afraid of losing my payments than losing her home.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: When Dad Confirmed the House Was Debt-Free, I Finally Told Him Why I
