normal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Mom say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s voice changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said I was being shortsighted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said sometimes you have to position the family before the opportunity becomes obvious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>The sentence sounded like business advice.<\/p>\n<p>It had apparently been about me.<\/p>\n<p>Dad whispered, \u201cClaire, I am so sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>Because forgiveness was not the question anymore.<\/p>\n<p>The question was whether Mom\u2019s entire retirement story had been built around a plan she started before I even owned the place.<\/p>\n<p>And if so, what else had she set in motion before any of us knew there was something to
