There was a tentative appointment requested for next Thursday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho requested it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSame customer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCancel it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can cancel the field visit, but the deposit isn\u2019t refundable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCancel it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She did.<\/p>\n<p>Before ending the call, I asked whether there were any notes.<\/p>\n<p>Patrice hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCustomer expects ownership transfer before filing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My grip tightened around the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFuture second dwelling to remain with parents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Parents.<\/p>\n<p>The word looked innocuous on paper.<\/p>\n<p>It had nearly become a property interest.<\/p>\n<p>By early afternoon, my attorney had called back.<\/p>\n<p>Her name was Evelyn Shaw, and she had handled the closing when I bought the house.<\/p>\n<p>I sent her everything.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty minutes later, she called.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe good news is your mother hasn\u2019t successfully done anything to the title.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the bad news?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has created enough documents that I want you to lock the property down administratively.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe notify the county that no permit, zoning request, easement, or subdivision application is authorized unless it comes directly from you or my office. We send the contractor a formal cease-and-desist notice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire, there\u2019s something odd about the proposed parcel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe western line.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I opened the map.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they wanted a retirement suite, this is too much land. The proposed parcel includes almost forty percent of your lake frontage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the red line.<\/p>\n<p>She was right.<\/p>\n<p>The addition occupied only a small portion.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the proposed parcel was vacant shoreline.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would she want that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know. But waterfront is your most valuable land.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That question stayed with me after we ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>At four, Dad phoned.<\/p>\n<p>His voice sounded exhausted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother is with your aunt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe won\u2019t speak to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was a pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201cI looked at the map again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something in his voice made me sit down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you notice?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe shoreline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse quickened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvelyn noticed it too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Not the amount. She called him a developer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard them on the phone last week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My throat went dry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad drew a breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said the parcel would be transferred soon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked out through the kitchen window at the western shoreline.<\/p>\n<p>Sunlight glittered between the two maples.<\/p>\n<p>This had never been only about retirement.<\/p>\n<p>The suite made the move seem emotional.<\/p>\n<p>The moving truck made it seem urgent.<\/p>\n<p>The public announcement made it difficult for me to refuse without embarrassing her.<\/p>\n<p>But the survey line had revealed something underneath all of it.<\/p>\n<p>A piece of my property had value I had not understood.<\/p>\n<p>And my mother had already told someone she expected to control it.<\/p>\n<p>Dad spoke again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s one more thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found a business card in her purse last night when she asked me for her glasses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA man named Martin Vale.
