ring.

That was the first thing I appreciated.

The second was that he did not kneel.

We were walking home from dinner after celebrating the fifth anniversary of our first actual date.

Not Julia’s ambush dinner.

The one after.

The one I had chosen.

The night was cold enough that our breath showed beneath streetlights.

Emma was at Ryan’s.

No witnesses.

No cameras.

No public pressure.

Daniel stopped near the small bridge I still walked sometimes.

The same creek.

The same rocks.

Years layered over the place.

He leaned against the railing.

“I want to ask you something.”

My stomach dropped immediately.

My body knew before my mind.

“Don’t.”

Daniel blinked.

“Okay.”

The me.

“Are you sure?”

“No.”

He almost smiled.

“Promising.”

I gripped the railing.

“Ask.”

Daniel looked toward the creek.

“I want to marry you.”

Not would you marry me.

I want.

A statement first.

Space for response.

My heartbeat filled my ears.

He continued.

“I know you don’t need marriage.”

I said nothing.

“I know we already have legal agreements.”

“Yes.”

“I know the house is yours.”

“Yes.”

“I know our finances work.”

“Yes.”

“I know Emma sees us as family.”

My throat tightened.

“Yes.”

“So I’m not proposing because nodded.

“Okay.”

My chest tightened.

“That’s it?”

“What else?”

“You’ve thought about this.”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

“A year.”

“A year?”

“I learned from the moving-in Ryan.”

Daniel’s face changed immediately.

The joke died.

“I’m sorry.”

“No.”

I closed my eyes.

“That was unfair.”

“Yes.”

“Sorry.”

“Accepted.”

We stood quietly.

“I hate that marriage still belongs to him in my head.”

Daniel did not speak.

“I hate that you say the word and my body reacts like you threatened something.”

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

“You’re right.”

Good.

He no longer tried to understand experiences he did not share.

That had become one of the things I loved most life.”

“I know.”

“So why does marriage feel like danger?”

Daniel looked at the creek.

“Maybe because it was.”

My throat tightened.

Not the institution universally.

For me.

Once.

It had contained danger.

Financial dependence.

Legal entanglement.

Assumed permanence that Ryan weaponized.

A signature used without permission.

Threats tied to my body.

Love turned into leverage.

Marriage itself had not done those things.

But the structure had held them.

“I don’t want to be stupid again.”

Daniel turned toward me.

“Marrying me would not prove you’re stupid.”

“Not seeing something might.”

“We could divorce too.”

I stared.

Not exactly romantic.

He shrugged.

“It’s true.”

“That’s your proposal strategy?”

“I’m not proposing yet.”

“Thank God.”

He smiled slightly.

“I’m saying marriage does not have to mean believing nothing bad can happen.”

I looked away.

“It means deciding the possible good is worth accepting uncertainty.”

“That sounds terrible.”

“Most adult choices do.”

He put his gloved hand beside mine on the railing.

Not touching.

Choice.

Again.

“You don’t need to answer.”

“What if the answer is never?”

“Then we stay as we are unless one of us decides that no longer works.”

Healthy honesty.

Infuriating.

“Would it matter to you?”

“Yes.”

There.

Truth.

“How much?”

Daniel considered.

“Enough that I would be sad.”

“Not enough to leave?”

“I don’t know.”

The answer frightened me.

He continued.

“I don’t want to promise something now just to make the question safer.”

I nodded slowly.

“I would need to know how I feel after hearing no.”

“That’s fair.”

“We’re not at no.”

“I know.”

“Or yes.”

“I know.”

“I need time.”

“You have it.”

We walked home.

No kiss on the bridge.

No cinematic ending.

Just two adults carrying a question.

I did not sleep well.

The next morning, I told Nina.

She looked unsurprised.

“You knew?”

“Daniel does not consult me.”

“You look like you knew.”

“I expected the topic eventually.”

“I hate you.”

“Common.”

I sat back.

“Am I afraid of marriage or afraid of repeating myself?”

“Good question.”

“That was not permission to compliment me.”

Nina smiled.

“What would marriage mean now that it did not mean with Ryan?”

I thought.

“Separate legal advice.”

“Good.”

“Prenup.”

“Good.”

“Financial transparency.”

“Yes.”

“Independent accounts.”

“Yes.”

“No access to each other’s passwords unless emergency structure.”

“Yes.”

“House stays separate unless explicitly changed.”

“Yes.”

“Full disclosure of debt.”

“Yes.”

“Annual financial meeting.”

Nina laughed.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“Say it.”

“You turned marriage into corporate governance.”

“That sounds ideal.”

She smiled.

“Anything emotional?”

I frowned.

“Those are emotional.”

“They are protective.”

“Yes.”

“What would marriage give you?”

That question was harder.

“I don’t know.”

“Then maybe that’s where to look.”

Marriage had once given me belonging.

A shared future.

Family identity.

But I already had those things.

Daniel lived with me.

Loved Emma.

Shared holidays.

Fixed leaking faucets.

Sat beside me in hospital waiting rooms when my mother had surgery.

We had built rituals.

Saturday breakfasts.

Thursday walks.

The crooked pottery bowl still held keys near the door.

What would a wedding change?

Public commitment.

Legal rights.

Inheritance.

Medical authority.

Symbol.

I resisted that last one.

Symbol had burned me before.

“I don’t need proof he loves me.”

“Good.”

“I don’t need the title.”

“Okay.”

“I don’t need a wedding.”

“Fine.”

Nina waited.

“Maybe I want to choose marriage once without disappearing.”

There.

Her expression softened.

“Say more.”

“With Ryan, marriage became something I survived.”

“Yes.”

“What if I want to experience it without fear choosing the terms?”

“That sounds different from needing to redeem marriage.”

“I don’t want a corrective wedding.”

“Good.”

“I don’t want to prove anything.”

“Good.”

“I just don’t want Ryan to still be the reason I refuse.”

That mattered.

The idea followed me for weeks.

Not Daniel’s desire.

Mine.

Was I saying no because no was right?

Or because fear had learned to disguise itself as independence?

The distinction was difficult.

One evening, I told Emma.

She was ten by then.

Old enough to understand without turning it into a school announcement immediately.

“Daniel and I are talking about maybe getting married.”

Her eyes widened.

“Actually?”

“Maybe.”

She groaned.

“You say maybe constantly.”

“I know.”

“Do I get dress?”

“Your priorities are excellent.”

She ignored that.

“Does Daniel become stepdad?”

“He sort of already functions like family.”

“But official.”

“Yes.”

She thought.

“Will Daddy care?”

My chest tightened.

“He may have feelings.”

“Lauren had wedding.”

“Yes.”

“So fair.”

Children loved symmetry.

“Life isn’t always about fair.”

She frowned.

“That’s what adults say when fair bad.”

I laughed.

“Maybe.”

Emma became serious.

“Do you want marry?”

There it was.

Everyone returned the question to me.

Annoying.

“I think I might.”

She nodded.

“Then do.”

“So simple?”

“Yes.”

“What if it goes wrong?”

Emma shrugged.

“Then divorce.”

I stared.

She had grown up with a different understanding of marriage than I did.

Not disposable.

But not imprisonment.

She knew divorce could be painful and still survivable.

That should have saddened me.

Instead, oddly, it freed something.

“What if I’m scared?”

She looked confused.

“You scared of Daniel?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“Marriage.”

Emma considered.

“Marriage not person.”

I smiled.

“No.”

“Then tell marriage behave.”

I laughed so hard I cried.

Later, I told Daniel.

“Emma says I should tell marriage to behave.”

“Strong legal theory.”

“She also thinks divorce is backup plan.”

“Less romantic.”

“She’s practical.”

“Clearly.”

I looked at him.

“I want a prenup.”

His expression changed.

Not surprise.

Attention.

“Okay.”

“I want separate lawyers.”

“Of course.”

“I want full financial disclosure from both of us.”

“Yes.”

“I want the house protected.”

“Yes.”

“I want separate retirement planning unless we deliberately combine something.”

“Yes.”

“I want agreements about what happens if one of us stops working.”

“Yes.”

“No hidden
