I checked my waist, my face, the fit of my clothes, always imagining Ryan somewhere behind me evaluating the same things.

Now I stood in a fitting room under unforgiving white lights and chose a dark green dress because I liked the way the color looked against my skin.

Not because Ryan had mentioned green.

Not because a saleswoman told me it made me appear thinner.

Because I liked it.

That distinction felt private and important.

At home, I hung the dress inside the closet.

The black one was still there.

For a moment I touched the sleeve.

The memory returned instantly: Ryan in the mirror, fastening his cuff links while telling me that attraction mattered.

I let go.

I did not try it on.

The green dress was mine in a way the black one no longer felt capable of being.

On the evening of the party, Ryan showered first.

I heard him humming while he shaved.

That alone told me he was excited.

He wore a charcoal suit I had always liked and spent several minutes choosing between two ties.

“Blue or gray?”

“Blue.”

“You sure?”

“You asked me.”

He smiled. “Blue it is.”

I sat at the dresser doing my makeup while our daughter slept in the next room. I had learned to work quickly since becoming a mother, but that evening I slowed down.

Not for Ryan.

For myself.

I pinned my hair back, changed my earrings twice, and finally stepped into the green dress.

The zipper closed easily.

I looked at myself.

Months earlier, that moment would have felt like victory.

Instead I felt something quieter.

Recognition.

The woman in the mirror had lost weight, yes.

But the change I cared about most could not be measured by the fabric around her waist.

I had kept promises to myself when no one was watching.

I had learned that exhaustion was not the same as weakness.

I had discovered mornings beyond the nursery walls.

When I came downstairs, Ryan was checking something on his phone.

He looked up.

Then looked again.

“Wow.”

I paused near the bottom step.

He stood.

“Seriously, Claire.”

“What?”

“You look incredible.”

A small part of me still warmed at the compliment.

I wished it did not.

“Good incredible?”

He laughed. “Very good incredible.”

He crossed the room and placed both hands on my waist.

For a second I remembered the night he had barely looked at me in the navy dress.

Now his eyes traveled over me with open approval.

“You’ve worked hard.”

“Yes.”

“I knew you could do it.”

There it was again.

Not congratulations.

Ownership.

As if my progress had validated his methods.

The babysitter rang the doorbell before I had to answer.

During the drive, Ryan kept glancing over.

At one traffic light, he reached across the center console and squeezed my knee.

“You nervous?”

“About what?”

“Seeing everyone.”

“No.”

He grinned. “They’re going to lose their minds.”

I turned toward the window.

City lights slid across the glass.

“What does that mean?”

“You haven’t been around most of these people since before the baby.”

“And?”

“And you look amazing.”

He said it enthusiastically, almost proudly.

I wanted to enjoy that.

Instead I wondered what he had told them when I was not there.

The party occupied a large private room above a restaurant downtown.

Music played quietly near the bar.
