I reheated whatever I had cooked, asked whether he wanted to talk, and believed him when he said he was too tired.

That had been part of loving him for years.

Trust meant not turning ordinary inconveniences into accusations.

At least that was what I had always thought.

The change in his phone was so gradual that I cannot identify the exact day I noticed it.

Ryan had once left his phone everywhere.

On the kitchen counter.

Beside the couch.

Charging on the dresser while he showered.

After our daughter was born, it began staying closer to him.

Then it began staying face down.

At first I told myself I was inventing significance because his threat about my weight had made me insecure.

I hated that possibility.

I did not want to become a wife who studied every notification.

One evening, while we were eating dinner, the phone vibrated against the table.

Ryan glanced down.

The movement in his face was almost invisible.

His eyes sharpened for half a second.

Then he picked up the phone and stood.

“I need to take this.”

He walked into the hallway.

Our daughter sat in her high chair beside me, banging a plastic spoon against the tray.

I listened without meaning to.

Ryan’s voice was too low to distinguish words.

When he returned, I took another bite of dinner and kept my tone deliberately casual.

“Work?”

“Yeah.”

“Everything okay?”

“Nothing important.”

He placed the phone beside his plate.

Face down.

I looked at it for one second too long.

Ryan noticed.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

His eyebrows drew together.

“You’re staring at my phone.”

“I was looking at the table.”

He gave a little laugh. “Okay.”

There was no accusation in his voice, but suddenly I felt accused anyway.

That was enough to make me doubt myself.

I cleaned the kitchen after dinner while Ryan sat on the couch scrolling. Our daughter grew sleepy against my shoulder. I carried her upstairs, changed her diaper, dimmed the nursery light, and rocked her until her fingers loosened around mine.

Downstairs, Ryan laughed softly at something on his phone.

I heard it through the floor.

For reasons I could not explain, that sound stayed with me.

The next morning, I walked faster.

Physical effort had become the place where my thoughts settled into order.

When I started, I had measured every outing in minutes endured.

Now I measured landmarks.

The bakery.

The bridge.

The school.

A hill two streets beyond the park that had once seemed impossible.

My daughter rode facing me, bundled beneath a pale blanket, her eyes wandering between passing trees and my face.

By then I had lost enough weight that old clothes were beginning to fit again.

The black dress remained in the closet.

I never touched it.

Ryan asked once why I did not try it on.

“I don’t feel like it.”

“You’ve probably lost enough.”

“Maybe.”

He smiled. “Would be nice to know.”

I closed the closet.

“I already know my clothes fit differently.”

He seemed surprised by the answer.

A few months earlier, I would have rushed to prove something to him.

Now I was beginning to understand that every milestone did not require his inspection.

The strangest part of changing physically was how slowly I noticed it myself.

Ryan noticed numbers.

I noticed function.

I could lift our daughter and carry her upstairs without pausing halfway.

I could push the stroller up the hill without leaning my entire body into the handle.

I slept better during the hours I actually got to sleep.

My back hurt less.

One afternoon, while kneeling on the living-room rug during a workout, I caught my daughter watching me with intense concentration.

I lowered myself into another push-up.

She squealed.

I laughed so hard I had to stop.

“You think that’s funny?”

She slapped both palms against the floor.

“All right. A hand on my waist. Compliments about my legs.

The attention should have reassured me that the marriage was recovering.

Instead, it confused me.

Why had affection become something I had to earn back by shrinking?

I did not ask.

Partly because I feared the answer.

Partly because I still wanted to believe we were moving toward something better.

Then came a Thursday evening when Ryan said he had another work dinner.

I had made soup because the weather had turned cold.
