She said pale blue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was no doubt.<\/p>\n<p>Frank\u2019s notebook confirmed it.<\/p>\n<p>The envelope had been intentionally kept from Lorraine.<\/p>\n<p>She gave it to Grant anyway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does T.B. stand for?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Maya said they had not opened that envelope yet.<\/p>\n<p>Attorneys were deciding who had authority.<\/p>\n<p>The notebook did not mention T.B.<\/p>\n<p>By evening, Lorraine called.<\/p>\n<p>Not Travis.<\/p>\n<p>Me.<\/p>\n<p>I almost ignored it.<\/p>\n<p>Then answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know they found the notebook.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you read it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice shook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrank hated me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wrote that he loved you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe also wrote that you were making harmful choices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds like hate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought of Frank\u2019s memorandum.<\/p>\n<p>Love does not require pretending a person cannot cause harm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe separated those things better than most of us did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lorraine breathed quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI destroyed his chance to warn Travis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No softening.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI gave Grant the envelope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if we never find it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen that\u2019s something you\u2019ll have to live with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI already do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sounded true.<\/p>\n<p>Then she asked, \u201cDoes Travis hate me now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I answered before thinking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause hate would be easier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lorraine made a small sound.<\/p>\n<p>I continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s grieving you while you\u2019re still alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>That was the most accurate description I had.<\/p>\n<p>He had not lost his mother physically.<\/p>\n<p>He had lost years of assumptions about who she was.<\/p>\n<p>That grief had no funeral.<\/p>\n<p>No ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>No simple ending.<\/p>\n<p>Later, Travis read the notebook scans.<\/p>\n<p>Every page.<\/p>\n<p>Not quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes he stopped for ten minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Frank\u2019s handwriting became less tidy near the end.<\/p>\n<p>More urgent.<\/p>\n<p>More abbreviations.<\/p>\n<p>Still methodical.<\/p>\n<p>One page listed three words under Grant\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p>Fear. Dependency. Delay.<\/p>\n<p>Beside them, Frank wrote:<\/p>\n<p>That is the business model.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the sentence.<\/p>\n<p>It described more than Grant.<\/p>\n<p>Fear kept Lorraine engaged.<\/p>\n<p>Dependency kept Daniel useful.<\/p>\n<p>Delay kept every problem alive long enough to generate more fees.<\/p>\n<p>Then the final entry.<\/p>\n<p>Written two days before Frank died.<\/p>\n<p>I spoke to Travis today. Could not tell him enough with Lorraine present. Need to get him alone this weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Travis went pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>He read it again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad called me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you remember?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He sat completely still.<\/p>\n<p>Then nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe talked about the storm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe asked if I could come by Saturday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank died Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Travis covered his mouth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told him maybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I put my hand on his arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was going to tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said maybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But knowing did not stop grief.<\/p>\n<p>He bowed his head.<\/p>\n<p>I stayed beside him.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually he whispered, \u201cWhat was in the blue envelope?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one knew.<\/p>\n<p>Then his phone buzzed.<\/p>\n<p>Maya.<\/p>\n<p>I got confirmation from the state financial regulator.
