11 – Grant Produced Frank’s Signature, but One Detail in the Document Made Travis Realize Someone Had Altered the Agreement

Grant wanted to meet in person.

Travis refused.

Not immediately.

He first forwarded the messages to Maya and asked whether there was any reason not to request the document electronically.

Her response was blunt.

Do not meet until we know what he claims exists.

So Travis wrote back.

Email the signed agreement.

Grant took nearly an hour to answer.

When he did, the attachment was twelve pages long.

Travis downloaded it onto his laptop.

We sat at the dining table again.

The same place now seemed permanently associated with revelations nobody wanted.

The document was titled Family Property Support Agreement.

That sounded suspicious before we read a single paragraph.

“What kind of title is that?” I asked.

“Not one Dad would use.”

“How do you know?”

“Dad named a folder ‘2019 House Documents — Important but Boring.’”

Despite everything, I laughed.

“That does sound more believable.”

The agreement identified three parties.

Frank Bennett.

Lorraine Bennett.

North Grove Holdings LLC.

Grant’s company.

According to the opening pages, North Grove had advanced funds to Lorraine in connection with a disputed investment withdrawal and property-related obligations.

Frank acknowledged the debt.

That part could be true.

Then came the clause Grant referenced.

If Frank died before the balance was resolved, “the Bennett family, including adult descendants who receive benefit from the Bennett property,” would use reasonable efforts to satisfy the outstanding obligation.

Travis frowned.

“That doesn’t say I assume the debt.”

“No.”

“It barely says anything.”

The phrasing was vague.

Reasonable efforts.

Adult descendants who receive benefit.

Nothing identifying Travis by name.

Nothing stating he was personally liable.

We continued.

The next section referenced the house.

Then the back parcel.

Samuel’s disputed ownership appeared in a single paragraph, proving Grant knew about it.

“Frank would never pledge disputed land without resolving Samuel first,” Travis said.

“Could he have been desperate?”

“Maybe.”

His certainty weakened.

Grief complicates what people believe about those who are gone.

We kept reading.

Page nine contained Frank’s signature.

There it was.

Frank Bennett.

Dated seven months before his death.

Lorraine’s signature appeared below.

Grant Holloway signed as managing member for North Grove.

A notary stamp sat at the bottom.

Travis touched his father’s signature on the screen.

“That looks like him.”

“Exactly?”

“Yes.”

He opened Frank’s letter from the binder and placed it beside the laptop.

The B.

The angle of the F.

The sharp upward final stroke.

Very close.

Possibly identical.

“So Grant wasn’t lying.”

“Maybe not.”

But something bothered me.

I returned to the first page.

Then the last.

“What?”

“The dates.”

Travis leaned closer.

The agreement was dated seven months before Frank died.

The notary acknowledgment was dated one day later.

Normal.

But the document footer said Revised 4/22.

Frank died in January 2022.

I pointed.

“That says April.”

Travis stared.

For several seconds he did not speak.

Then he scrolled to another page.

Same footer.

Revised 4/22.

Three months after Frank’s death.

My pulse quickened.

“Could it be the template revision date?”

“Maybe.”

“Ask Grant.”

Travis wrote immediately.

Why does the agreement allegedly signed by my father before his death have a revision footer dated three months after he died?

No response.

We waited.

Five minutes.

Ten.

Nothing.

“That’s not good,” I said.

“For him.”

“Yes.”

We sent the document to Maya.

Her answer came faster than Grant’s.

Do not communicate further about substance. Preserve the original file and metadata.

That shifted the situation from family mystery toward something potentially legal.

Travis downloaded copies.

I emailed one to myself.

He saved screenshots of Grant’s messages.

Then we sat back.

“What if the signature was copied?” I asked.

“Possible.”

“From what?”

“Dad signed everything.”

Checks.

Insurance forms.

Tax filings.

Mortgage papers.

Thousands of opportunities.

“What about the notary?”

“That can be checked.”

Maya already had someone doing so.

An hour later, Grant replied.

The footer reflects later administrative formatting. The underlying agreement predates Frank’s death.

Travis showed Maya.

She advised no response.

Grant sent another.

I would caution against turning a solvable financial matter into accusations that could damage your mother.

That language told me more than he intended.

Not your father’s wishes.

Not the validity of the agreement.

Your mother.

“He’s protecting Lorraine.”

“Or threatening us with her.”

Travis closed the laptop.

“I’m done talking to him without Maya.”

Good.

We shifted to the documents Melissa found.

One of Frank’s notes mentioned Grant repeatedly.

Not favorably.

Call attorney about Grant representations.

Request prospectus.

Ask whether signature required for house security.

Do not let L sign alone.

That final note mattered.

Lorraine had already signed something against Frank’s wishes.

Possibly the private loan guarantee.

By late afternoon, Maya called.

“I have some preliminary information.”

Her tone was controlled.

“That notary commission number exists.”

My stomach dropped.

Then she continued.

“But it belonged to someone in another county.”

“Could Frank have traveled?”

“Possible.”

“Did he?”

Travis looked at me.

“Not that I know.”

Maya continued.

“The address listed on the notarization belongs to an office Grant used.”

That was less comforting.

“I’m sending the document to a forensic examiner,” she said. “No promises.”

“What should we do about Lorraine?”

“For now, nothing related to the agreement.”

“What if Grant contacts her?”

“He already is.”

“How do you know?”

“She called me.”

Travis nearly dropped the phone.

“Mom called you?”

“Yes.”

“She has your number?”

“Apparently Grant gave it to her from your forwarded correspondence.”

That disturbed Maya enough that her voice sharpened.

“She wanted to know whether you were preparing to sue her.”

“We’re not.”

“I told her I do not represent her and cannot advise her.”

“What did she say?”

“That you were trying to prove Frank was incompetent.”

Travis stared at the phone.

“What?”

“I have no idea where that came from.”

Neither did we.

Then Lorraine herself called.

Travis let it ring.

Again.

Again.

The fourth time, he answered.

“Maya is our attorney now for anything involving Grant.”

Lorraine erupted immediately.

“You dragged lawyers into this?”

“Grant dragged Dad’s signature into it.”

“He did sign.”

“You saw him?”

“Yes.”

Travis stood.

“You watched Dad sign that agreement?”

A pause.

“Yes.”

My eyes narrowed.

“When?” Travis asked.

“At Grant’s office.”

“Why were you there?”

“To fix the mess.”

“What mess?”

Lorraine stopped.

Travis waited.

“The investment.”

“So you admit there was an investment problem.”

“I never denied it.”

“You never told me.”

“That isn’t denying it.”

Her instinct for technical distinction was almost impressive.

“Did Dad know about the private loan?”

“Yes.”

“Did he agree to it?”

“Eventually.”

“Was Samuel’s land part of the collateral?”

Lorraine went quiet.

“Mom?”

“Grant said it could be resolved later.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

“I don’t remember every detail.”

“You remembered Dad signing.”

“Yes.”

“Then tell me where you were sitting.”

“What?”

“When he signed.”

Lorraine became angry.

“I am not participating in some interrogation.”

“Did Dad sign before or after the document was revised?”

Silence.

“You think I forged his signature.”

“I think the document Grant sent has a date problem.”

“That footer means nothing.”

Interesting.

She already knew about it.

Travis looked at me.

I wrote on a scrap of paper.

How did she know?

He nodded.

“How did you know about the footer?”

Lorraine hesitated.

“Grant explained it.”

“When?”

“Today.”

“So you spoke with him.”

“Of course.”

“How often?”

“That is none of your business.”

“Mom, if you are asking my siblings for seventy-eight thousand dollars based on a document using Dad’s signature, yes, it is.”

Her breathing became louder.

“I did not ask Melissa.”

“You asked Aaron.”

“He has money.”

The bluntness almost made me laugh.

“Why seventy-eight thousand exactly?”

“That’s the settlement amount.”

“Of what?”

“The account.”

“What account?”

“The one Grant set up.”

“Investment or loan?”

“Both.”

Even Travis looked confused.

“Explain.”

Lorraine finally began.

Years earlier, a friend introduced her to Grant at a charity dinner.

He specialized, according to Lorraine, in high-income opportunities for retired professionals and small-business owners.

Lorraine had money from an inheritance she had never fully merged with Frank’s finances.

That was news.

“How much inheritance?”

“A little over one hundred thousand.”

“And you invested eighty?”

“Yes.”

“Without telling Dad.”

“It was my money.”

“Then why did Dad get involved?”

“Because withdrawals were temporarily suspended.”

I watched Travis’s face.

Lorraine insisted the investment itself was legitimate.

Grant told her a large property transaction inside the fund had delayed redemptions.

She wanted her money back.

Grant offered bridge financing.

The loan would give her liquidity until the fund paid out.

“Why did you need liquidity so urgently?”

Lorraine did not answer.

“Mom.”

“I was helping someone.”

Travis looked at me.

“Daniel?”

Silence.

That was answer enough.

“Why were you giving Daniel money before any of us knew?”

“He needed help.”

“Why was that your responsibility?”

“Because somebody needed to make sure Zia still had her real father.”

The words hung there.

Travis closed his eyes.

“You borrowed against your house to fund Daniel?”

“Not just him.”

“Who else?”

Lorraine refused.

“Mom, Dad found out, didn’t he?”

“Yes.”

“He told you to stop.”

“He didn’t understand.”

“What didn’t he understand?”

“That once you married her, Daniel was going to disappear completely.”

I felt heat rise through me.

“This was never about Daniel,” Travis said. “It was about you refusing to accept Zia.”

“That is not true.”

“You financed a man who barely called his child because you needed him present enough to keep me from becoming her father.”

Lorraine’s voice cracked.

“I was protecting you.”

“From what?”

“From raising another man’s child and waking up one day when you were fifty realizing you had given everything away.”

I stopped breathing.

The cruelty was quieter than a shout.

Maybe Lorraine even believed it.

That made it worse.

Travis looked toward the stairs.

Zia was outside with Claire that afternoon.

Thank God.

“Mom,” he said.

His voice had gone flat.

“That child has never taken anything from me.”

Lorraine tried to respond.

He continued.

“You did.”

Silence.

“I spent years paying your bills because I thought Dad died leaving you in a financial situation you couldn’t manage.”

“That is true.”

“No.”

His voice tightened.

“You created at least part of it yourself.”

“I made one bad investment.”

“You borrowed against the house.”

“Because Grant said—”

“You paid Daniel.”

“To help him.”

“You lied to Dad.”

“I did not lie.”

“You hid it.”

“That is not the same thing.”

Travis laughed once.

It sounded exhausted.

“There it is again.”

“What?”

“The smallest possible definition of wrongdoing.”

Lorraine became defensive.

“You think because Frank wrote everything down, he was perfect?”

“No.”

“I lived with him forty years.”

“I know.”

“You knew him as a father. I knew him as a husband.”

“I know.”

“You don’t know what he did.”

The phrase echoed what she said earlier.

“What did he do?”

Lorraine hesitated.

Then she spoke more quietly.

“He opened accounts I could not access.”

Travis frowned.

“What accounts?”

“After he found out about Grant.”

“That sounds reasonable.”

“To you.”

“After you borrowed money without telling him?”

“He controlled everything.”

“Did he?”

“Yes.”

Her certainty made me pause.

Family stories are rarely simple enough for one person to be entirely reliable.

“What exactly did Dad control?” Travis asked.

“Money.”

“Before or after the investment?”

“Both.”

“Did you have your own accounts?”

“Yes.”

“Your inheritance?”

“Yes.”

“Then what couldn’t you access?”

“His business savings.”

“That was business money.”

“You sound exactly like him.”

Travis rubbed his forehead.

“What does any of this have to do with the agreement?”

Lorraine exhaled.

“Frank wanted the debt handled.”

“Then why didn’t he put it in his letter?”

“He didn’t tell you everything.”

“Apparently nobody did.”

A pause.

“Did he sign the North Grove agreement?”

“Yes.”

“Was the page Grant sent the exact version he signed?”

Lorraine did not answer.

Travis’s eyes sharpened.

“Mom.”

“It was essentially the same.”

My stomach dropped.

“What does essentially mean?”

“The terms didn’t change.”

“Then why was it revised?”

“Formatting.”

“Mom.”

“I don’t know.”

“You were there.”

“I was there for the original.”

There.

The distinction.

Travis heard it too.

“The original.”

Lorraine became quiet.

“Grant sent me a revised copy later.”

“When?”

“After Frank died.”

My pulse quickened.

“What changed?”

“Nothing important.”

“What changed?”

She finally answered.

“The family obligation language.”

Travis stopped moving.

“What did the original say?”

“I don’t remember exactly.”

“Did it mention adult descendants?”

Another long pause.

“No.”

The room went silent.

Grant’s document claimed Frank had agreed that adult descendants benefiting from the property would make reasonable efforts to satisfy the debt.

That clause was added later.

After Frank died.

“Mom,” Travis whispered, “Grant altered Dad’s agreement.”

“Not his obligation.”

“His signed document.”

“The debt was still real.”

“That is not the point.”

“It is to me.”

“Did you authorize the revision?”

Silence.

“Did you?”

Lorraine’s voice dropped.

“Yes.”

Travis lowered the phone.

I could hear her continuing.

“Travis?”

He brought it back.

“Why?”

“Because Grant said otherwise the debt might become immediately enforceable.”

“So you let him add language involving us.”

“I was protecting the house.”

“You were protecting yourself.”

“I was protecting the family.”

“No.”

His voice cracked for the first time.

“You keep using that word for things you do to people.”

He ended the call.

Neither of us spoke.

Several minutes later, Maya called.

The forensic examiner had found something preliminary.

Frank’s signature image on the revised agreement was digitally identical to a signature appearing on an older North Grove form.

Not similar.

Identical.

Same pixel pattern.

Same edge artifacts.

Copied.

Pasted.

The document Grant had sent was not the version Frank signed.

And Lorraine had just admitted she authorized changes after his death.

Maya’s final instruction was simple.

Do not delete anything.

Do not pay anyone.

And do not warn Grant what we know.

Because the problem was no longer only whether Lorraine owed seventy-eight thousand dollars.

It was whether Grant had built a debt claim around a dead man’s copied signature—and whether Lorraine had helped him do it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: When Lorraine Arrived Without Warning, She Finally Revealed Why Keeping Zia
