of thousands of dollars maintaining Daniel’s connection?

Pride could explain some of it.

Not the scale.

Then I remembered the original investment loss.

The refinance.

The eighty-thousand-dollar settlement.

The ninety-four-thousand-dollar transfer.

“Maybe Daniel isn’t separate from the money problem.”

Travis frowned.

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

We called Melissa.

She photographed every page from the old folder and sent them.

One page immediately stood out.

North Grove Holdings was not merely a lender.

It appeared to be affiliated with North Grove Income Fund, the investment that had taken Lorraine’s original money.

Grant Holloway’s business card appeared in both sets of records.

Investment advisor.

Private lending contact.

Same person.

“Conflict of interest?” I asked.

“Maybe worse.”

Frank’s handwritten note used a phrase we had missed before.

Grant moved Lorraine into bridge financing after the fund froze withdrawals.

“What is bridge financing?”

Travis searched.

In this context, it appeared Lorraine had borrowed money using property as collateral because she could not withdraw funds from the investment.

She had borrowed to solve a problem caused by the investment itself.

“Why would anyone do that?”

“Because Grant told her the money was temporary.”

We found another note from Frank.

Do not send Daniel anything else until Grant returns the original funds.

I stared at the sentence.

“Frank knew about Daniel.”

“Yes.”

Travis read it again.

“Before he died.”

“And he connected Daniel’s money to Grant.”

We went back through dates.

The first eight-thousand-dollar payment to Daniel occurred one week after Lorraine had taken the North Grove bridge loan.

“What if she didn’t have cash to help Daniel before that?”

“She borrowed against the house to get cash.”

“And then used some of it on him.”

“Why?”

The answer arrived from an unexpected source.

Daniel called back.

“I found an old email.”

“What email?”

“From Lorraine.”

“When?”

“Two years ago.”

His voice sounded unsettled.

“She told me she would help financially if I signed something.”

My skin went cold.

“What?”

“A statement.”

“What statement?”

“I never signed it.”

“What did it say?”

“That I objected to Travis acting as Zia’s father.”

I looked at Travis.

He went completely still.

Daniel continued.

“And that if anyone ever tried to adopt her, I would contest it.”

“Why did she need that in writing?”

“I asked the same thing.”

“What did she say?”

“That family records mattered.”

“What family records?”

“I don’t know.”

“Send the email.”

He did.

The attachment opened as a PDF.

A draft declaration.

Most of it was ordinary enough.

Daniel was Zia’s biological father.

He had not consented to adoption.

He intended to preserve his parental rights.

Then the final paragraph changed everything.

I also understand that Lorraine Bennett’s financial assistance to me is conditioned only on my maintaining an active paternal relationship with Zia and is not payment for any specific legal action.

I read the line aloud.

Travis stared.

“That is exactly what people write when they are worried money could look like payment for legal action.”

“Yes.”

“And Daniel didn’t sign it.”

“No.”

“Did she keep paying him anyway?”

“Yes.”

Why?

We did not know.

But Frank had known enough to tell Lorraine to stop.

That meant the conflict had already begun before his death.

Hours later, Travis received a message from a number he did not recognize.

Mr. Bennett, my name is Grant Holloway. Your mother asked me to contact you regarding an urgent family financial matter.

Travis showed me.

“Grant.”

The investment advisor.

The lender contact.

The man Frank had warned Lorraine about.

Travis typed:

What matter?

Grant replied:

Your mother is in danger of defaulting on an obligation your father was aware of. I believe you would prefer to resolve this privately before attorneys become involved.

Travis’s expression hardened.

He wrote:

Send documentation.

Grant answered:

Some records require Lorraine’s authorization.

Then he added:

However, there is one thing you should know. Your father intended for you to assume responsibility for the obligation if he died before it was resolved.

Travis read the message twice.

“Dad never wrote that.”

“No.”

Grant sent one final message.

I have his signature.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: Grant Produced Frank’s Signature, but One Detail in the Document Made Travis Realize Someone Had Altered the Agreement

Nobody spoke for several seconds after Aaron said the words.
