smiled.

“Power restored.”

At home, Sophie opened Mrs. Parker’s envelope.

The first pages were ordinary.

A September handwriting sample.

A drawing of our house.

A math test she had scored badly on and apparently wanted destroyed.

Then the family project.

Original purple sheets.

Mrs. Parker had made clean copies before returning them months earlier.

Sophie looked through.

Beach picture.

Isabella and Michael.

Ethan and Margaret.

We found each other.

Michael’s line.

The blank square.

Then, at the bottom, a smaller envelope.

Sophie opened it.

Inside was the original newspaper clipping.

The one she had carried from our closet.

The one Mrs. Parker had called inappropriate.

The one Ethan had recognized.

Sophie stared.

“I thought this was in my box.”

“We had a copy.”

Mrs. Parker had apparently kept the original secured in her classroom file after Ethan borrowed it for documentation.

I had forgotten.

The clipping looked smaller now.

Old paper.

Faded ink.

Nothing magical about it.

Yet everything had changed because Sophie brought it to school.

Inside the envelope was a note from Mrs. Parker.

Sophie read aloud.

Dear Sophie,

On the day you brought this picture, I saw the sad story around it before I saw the family inside it.

You taught me to look twice.

Thank you.

Then one question:

If you were doing the assignment again, what picture would you bring?

Sophie stopped.

Daniel looked at me.

I waited.

She read the question again.

“What would you?” I asked.

“I don’t know.”

That surprised me.

Months ago she would have answered all of them.

Every photograph.

Every relative.

Every recovered branch.

Now she looked thoughtful.

She took out her family-history box.

Spread photographs across the carpet.

Beach.

Isabella and Michael.

Richard.

Margaret.

Diane.

Laura.

Ethan.

Frank.

The still from the home video.

The adoption-day photograph.

A recent dinner.

Then she found one I had forgotten.

Taken after the diner months earlier.

Everyone outside under a parking-lot light.

Sophie in front.

Daniel and me.

Ethan.

Margaret.

Diane.

Laura.

Renee.

Not everyone from the family tree.

Not every dead person.

Not Grace.

Not Richard.

Not Frank.

Not Isabella and Michael.

But all the living people who had chosen to keep showing up.

Sophie looked at it.

“Maybe this.”

I nodded.

“Why?”

“Because it’s now.”

That answer was perfect.

Not because the past mattered less.

Because family cannot survive as an archive alone.

The past needed preservation.

The present needed living.

She took a blank sheet of paper.

Wrote:

IF I DID THE PROJECT AGAIN:

Then taped the recent photograph beneath it.

Underneath she wrote:

THIS IS MY FAMILY NOW.

She paused.

I felt something catch in my chest.

Would “now” erase Isabella and Michael?

Apparently Sophie anticipated that.

She she placed the newspaper clipping back inside its envelope.

Not displayed.

Not discarded.

Stored.

She carried it upstairs.

Opened her box.

Placed
