It works.”

I had created a monster.

A very principled one.

Life settled into new routines.

Ethan came for dinner every other Wednesday.

Margaret and Diane spoke by phone sometimes without Sophie being the reason.

Laura mailed Sophie a postcard from every trip she took.

Renee had become the person we called whenever an old photograph contained someone nobody else recognized.

Mrs. Parker finished the school year with a classroom full of children who understood that family could be drawn in more than one shape.

And Richard stopped appearing in every conversation.

That was important too.

He had occupied enough rooms after death.

One rainy Sunday, Sophie sat at the kitchen table making labels for a science project.

Daniel was cutting cardboard.

I was folding laundry nearby.

She asked, “What did I wear on adoption day?”

The question came so casually that at first I thought I misheard.

“What?”

“When you adopted me.”

Daniel stopped cutting.

Sophie looked up.

“What did I wear?”

I tried to picture it.

Courtroom.

Social worker.

Daniel in a blue shirt.

Me with my hair pulled back because Sophie had spit up on it in the parking lot.

Sophie herself…

“I think a yellow dress.”

Daniel frowned.

“No. Pink.”

“It was definitely yellow.”

“Wasn’t yellow the first birthday?”

I stared at him.

“Maybe.”

Sophie looked alarmed.

“You don’t know?”

“We know the day.”

“I asked what I wore.”

“I know.”

She set down her marker.

“Do we have pictures?”

“Yes.”

That answer came with confidence.

Then I realized I had no idea where they were.

Not in Sophie’s box.

Not in Richard’s.

Not with the family albums downstairs.

Our earliest years with Sophie existed partly on old phones, partly in cloud folders, partly printed in envelopes I had not opened in ages.

I suddenly hated that.

“We have them somewhere.”

Sophie narrowed her eyes.

“That’s what adults say when they lost something.”

“We did not lose them.”

Daniel said, “That sounded defensive.”

“I am defending our organizational system.”

“We don’t have one.”

Sophie looked between us.

“You lost my adoption pictures.”

“No.”

I stood.

“We are finding them.”

Daniel whispered, “Now?”

“Yes.”

Sophie grinned.

“You’re scared.”

“I am not.”

“You’re doing the fast-cleaning walk.”

I was.

Twenty minutes later, the dining table held three old phones, two external drives, a stack of photo envelopes, and one laptop that had not been turned on in years.

Sophie loved the chaos.

“This is like the family investigation again.”

“No.”

Daniel looked at me.

“It is a little.”

“No hidden letters.”

“Yet.”

“Do not say yet.”

Eventually we found the photographs.

Not lost.

Just buried in a folder called COURT / FINAL.

Very romantic.

Sophie leaned beside me while the thumbnails loaded.

There she was.

Eleven months old.

Wearing a blue dress.

Not yellow.

Not pink.

Daniel looked unbearably pleased.

“I knew it wasn’t yellow.”

“You said pink.”

“Closer.”

“That is not how colors work.”

Sophie ignored us.

She clicked the first image.

The courthouse steps.

Daniel holding her.

Me beside him.

Sophie chewing the corner of a manila folder.

“Why am I eating paper?”

“You were teething.”

“Was I happy?”

“You were confused.”

“How do you know?”

“You cried when the judge touched your shoe.”

“That sounds reasonable.”

We clicked through.

The waiting room.

A social worker holding Sophie.

Us signing documents.

The judge smiling.

A photograph of all three of us after the order was finalized.

I remembered the exact moment.

I had cried.

Daniel had laughed because he cries when overwhelmed and then denies it.

Sophie had slept through most of the ceremony.

“Who is that?” she asked.

She pointed to a woman near the back of one photograph.

Elena.

The social worker.

“You know her.”

“Oh.”

She zoomed in.

“Who’s that?”

Another person stood near the hallway doors.

Older man.

Gray hair.

Only partly visible.

My stomach tightened.

Not again.

Daniel leaned closer.

“Is that Richard?”

I stared.

It looked like him.

But unlike the newspaper clipping, this image was clearer.

Same hairline.

Same shoulders.

Same face.

Sophie saw our reaction.

“What?”

I enlarged the image.

Richard was standing outside the courtroom.

Not inside.

Watching.

My pulse changed.

“He was there.”

Daniel whispered it first.

Sophie looked at me.

“At my adoption?”

“Yes.”

“I thought he didn’t come.”

“So did I.”

Daniel searched the other photographs.

Richard appeared in only two.

In one, he stood near the elevator.

In the other, near the exit.

Never closer.

Never speaking to anyone.

Never approaching.

Just present.

Sophie touched the screen.

“He saw me become your kid.”

The phrasing hurt.

“You were already our kid.”

“You know what I mean.”

“Yes.”

She looked at Richard.

“Why didn’t he say hi?”

I could guess.

He had decided not to interfere.

He had told himself Sophie needed stability.

He had watched from parking lots and school festivals.

Of course he might have watched this too.

But guessing had caused enough problems in this family.

“We don’t know.”

She looked at Daniel.

“Did you see him?”

“No.”

“Mom?”

“No.”

“Did Elena?”

“That we can ask.”

Sophie looked interested.

Then stopped herself.

She closed the laptop.

“No.”

I blinked.

“You don’t want to know?”

“I do.”

“Then?”

She thought.

“Would it change anything?”

Daniel looked at me.

I waited.

Sophie continued.

“Grandpa knew I was getting adopted.”

“Yes.”

“He came.”

“Yes.”

“He didn’t stop it.”

“No.”

“He didn’t talk.”

“No.”

“So either he was scared, sad, trying to protect me, protecting himself, or all the stuff.”

“Probably.”

She shrugged.

“We already know that.”

That was the most remarkable change of all.

A year ago, every unanswered question would have pulled her forward.

Now she could recognize repetition.

The same pattern did not always need a new investigation.

She reopened the photograph.

“I want this one.”

“Which?”

“The one with him in the back.”

“Why?”

She looked at the screen.

“Because it’s weird.”

That was apparently reason enough.

I printed it.

She placed it in her box.

Not in Richard’s folder.

Hers.

Later that evening, she returned to her original question.

“What did I wear?”

“Blue.”

“Good.”

“Why did you want to know?”

Sophie shrugged.

“We were doing a timeline at school.”

“What kind?”

“Important days.”

“What did you put?”

“My birthday.”

“Adoption day.”

“The day I learned to ride a bike.”

“The day Uncle Ethan found me.”

She paused.

“And the day I found everybody else.”

I smiled.

“What date is that?”

She frowned.

“I don’t know.”

“That was several days.”

“Then maybe it’s not a date.”

“What is it?”

“A season.”

Daniel looked up.

“A season?”

“Yeah.”

She drew a long bracket across several weeks on her school timeline.

Above it she wrote:

WHEN MY FAMILY GOT BIGGER.

That phrase pleased her.

Not fixed.

Not recovered.

Not completed.

Bigger.

Because there was no version of Sophie’s story in which one family erased another.

A few nights later, she asked me something harder.

“Did you ever wish I wasn’t adopted?”

I turned away from the sink.

“What?”

“Not that you didn’t want me.”

She clarified immediately.

“Like, did you wish I was just born to you so none of this was complicated?”

I dried my hands.

“Yes.”

Her face changed.

I moved closer.

“Not because I wanted Isabella and Michael erased.”

“Then why?”

“Because I wish you didn’t have to lose people in order to become my daughter.”

She looked down.

“I wish there had been a way for you to have everyone without the accident.”

She thought.

“That means I’d live with them.”

“Probably.”

“And maybe you wouldn’t know me.”

“Probably.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“Then would you still wish it?”

That was the cruel mathematics of adoption grief.

To wish away the loss can feel like wishing away the relationship created afterward.

There was no answer that made every truth comfortable.

“I wish they had lived.”

I said it carefully.

“Even if that meant I never got to be your mom.”

Sophie stared at me.

“You’d give me back?”

“That’s not what I mean.”

“It kind of is.”

I sat beside her.

“If Isabella and Michael could walk through that door alive and the last seven years could somehow be undone, I would want that for you.”

Her face crumpled.

“Even if I left?”

My chest hurt.

“Yes.”

She looked horrified.

“Why?”

“Because loving you means wanting what would have been good for you, even if it hurt me.”

She started crying.

Immediately I questioned everything I had said.

But she did not pull away when I hugged her.

After a while, she whispered, “I don’t want to leave.”

“I know.”

“I want you.”

“I know.”

“And Dad.”

“I know.”

“And them.”

“I know.”

She cried harder.

“There’s no version where I get everybody.”

“No.”

That was the grief beneath all of it.

No letters could fix that.

No reunion.

No family dinner.

No archived recording.

The family could become larger.

But Isabella and Michael would not return.

She pressed her face against my shirt.

“That’s not fair.”

“No.”

I did not tell her to be grateful.

I did not explain fate.

I did not say everything had happened for a reason.

I held her.

Eventually she asked, “Would Isabella want me to stay with you?”

I thought of the letter.

You are her parents.

“If she knew us?”

“Yes.”

“I think she’d want whatever made you safe and loved.”

“Would that be us?”

“Yes.”

This time I could answer.

She nodded against me.

Then she asked, “Could I love her if I’d never met you?”

“Yes.”

“Could I love you if I’d never met her?”

“You wouldn’t be you without her.”

She sighed.

“This is complicated again.”

“Yes.”

She wiped her face.

“Rule?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Some things don’t need rules.”

She thought.

“Good.”

The next morning, her timeline went to school.

Birth.

Adoption.

First bike ride.

Family got bigger.

No
