Richard.”

Everyone went quiet.

Laura looked at Sophie.

“He told me he wished Dad were awake.”

Diane covered her mouth.

“Why?”

“He wanted to ask whether starting over somewhere new made him a failure.”

Diane began crying.

Laura’s voice broke.

“I told him Dad would say no.”

“Did Michael believe you?”

“I think so.”

Diane wiped her eyes.

“Why didn’t he call?”

“He said it was late.”

Sophie looked down at the notebook.

Another delay.

Another call not made.

Another assumption.

Then she said softly, “Rule two again.”

Diane laughed through tears.

“Yes.”

Margaret sat beside her.

For once, no awkwardness.

She simply took Diane’s hand.

Two women who had once been on opposite sides of a custody question.

Two mothers whose children died in the same car.

No contest.

No ranking of grief.

Just grief.

Sophie watched them.

Then she wrote Rule Four.

I looked over her shoulder.

DON’T WAIT BECAUSE IT IS LATE.

Daniel laughed softly.

“That one may affect bedtime.”

She closed the notebook.

“Not for kids.”

“Convenient.”

As people finally prepared to leave, Mrs. Parker stopped near the front door.

She looked at the crowded house.

Then at Sophie.

“I think your project outgrew the bulletin board.”

Sophie smiled.

“Good.”

Mrs. Parker continued.

“I want to do something different with the class.”

“What?”

“Not another family poster.”

Sophie looked suspicious.

“A story project.”

“What kind?”

“A story about one thing they learned from someone in their family.”

Sophie thought.

“Can mine be rules?”

“Yes.”

She smiled.

“I have four already.”

After everyone left, I found Ethan alone on Margaret’s porch.

He was staring toward the road.

“You okay?”

“Yeah.”

He looked back through the window.

“Actually, maybe.”

I stood beside him.

“Progress.”

He smiled.

Then his expression changed.

“There’s something I didn’t say at dinner.”

My stomach tightened.

“What?”

“I got an email yesterday.”

“From?”

“The county archive.”

I waited.

“They found one more document associated with the accident.”

Of course.

“What kind?”

“A property receipt.”

“For what?”

“Items recovered from the car.”

My chest tightened.

“Anything important?”

“One item was never returned.”

“What?”

Ethan looked at me.

“A small portable voice recorder.”

I stared.

“Whose?”

“Listed as Isabella’s.”

“And they still have it?”

“No.”

His voice lowered.

“The receipt says Richard signed for it.”

I closed my eyes.

“Richard again.”

“Yes.”

“Did we find a recorder in any box?”

“No.”

“Cassette?”

“No.”

“This was digital?”

“Apparently.”

“Do we know what was on it?”

“No.”

He looked through the window at Sophie.

“But Laura says Isabella used to record thoughts when she was driving.”

My skin prickled.

“When she was driving?”

“Usually parked.”

“Usually?”

He gave me a look.

I understood.

The recorder might contain nothing.

Grocery lists.

Ideas.

Baby notes.

Or it might contain something from the final day.

I stared at the dark road.

“Where would Richard put it?”

Ethan looked equally tired of the question.

“Apparently anywhere except where a normal person keeps things.”

And just like that, the dinner’s fragile sense of completion opened into one more unresolved room.

Click here to continue reading: PART 24: The Recorder Richard Took from the Wreck Was Hidden Inside Isabella’s Music
