too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor leaving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went to college.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou barely came home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause home was miserable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice broke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut at the time, I told Richard to give you space.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie whispered, \u201cMore space.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret said, \u201cI thought space would help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan looked exhausted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid anything in this family improve because of space?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret cried harder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was no cruelty in his question.<\/p>\n<p>Only grief.<\/p>\n<p>And suddenly the pattern expanded again.<\/p>\n<p>Richard had not been the only person who delayed.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret had too.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan.<\/p>\n<p>Renee.<\/p>\n<p>Diane.<\/p>\n<p>Frank.<\/p>\n<p>Me.<\/p>\n<p>All of us, in different ways, had mistaken waiting for wisdom.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie looked around at the adults.<\/p>\n<p>Then said, \u201cNew family rule number two.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d Daniel
