Requests welfare check if vehicle observed.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan read the sentence aloud at our kitchen table.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie was doing math homework.<\/p>\n<p>She looked up at the word argument.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo they did fight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He kept reading.<\/p>\n<p>Caller states he told daughter she was making a mistake by leaving with husband and should reconsider before uprooting child.<\/p>\n<p>Laura closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>The final argument.<\/p>\n<p>Richard had repeated the same pattern from years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Isabella planning to leave.<\/p>\n<p>Richard calling it a mistake.<\/p>\n<p>A loyalty test.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie looked at the old photograph of the packed suitcase.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did it twice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Mom get mad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The log answered indirectly.<\/p>\n<p>Caller reports daughter ended call abruptly.<\/p>\n<p>Forty-three seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Then silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then Richard\u2019s concern.<\/p>\n<p>Then the crash.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie stared at the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Grandpa knew he upset her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd he called because he was scared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why did he lie later?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one knew.<\/p>\n<p>Or perhaps we did.<\/p>\n<p>Shame.<\/p>\n<p>Fear.<\/p>\n<p>The need to survive the unbearable idea that your last words to your daughter might have distracted her moments before she died.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan closed the file.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think he blamed himself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura nodded slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father thought so too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That explanation did not prove causation.<\/p>\n<p>But it explained Richard\u2019s years of behavior.<\/p>\n<p>His reluctance to appear.<\/p>\n<p>His fixation on protecting Sophie.<\/p>\n<p>His hidden files.<\/p>\n<p>His refusal to let Ethan search.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe he had not only been hiding his control.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe he had been hiding guilt.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie pushed her math worksheet aside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Grandpa cause the crash?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said it with care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot say that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut he made Mom upset.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then the car crashed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat feels like causing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat beside her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes one thing can contribute without being the whole cause.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does contribute mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBe one part of what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at the rain streaking our kitchen window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo wet road was one part.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBad tires one part.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom being upset maybe one part.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad driving one part.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Grandpa\u2019s call maybe one part.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She hated maybe.<\/p>\n<p>But she accepted it.<\/p>\n<p>Then she asked something none of us expected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Grandpa ever forgive himself?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan looked toward Richard\u2019s final letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie was quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe that\u2019s why he kept everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one answered.<\/p>\n<p>She picked up her pencil again.<\/p>\n<p>Then added, almost casually:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe he wanted us to know the truth because he couldn\u2019t tell it.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lastestdrama.com\/?p=1413\">Click here to continue reading: PART 19: Michael\u2019s Mother Finally Met Sophie, but Her Version of the Custody Fight Exposed the One Decision That Had Quietly Shaped Seven Years<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ethan did not speak for several seconds.
