cards.

Letters from summer camp.

Then Ethan found an envelope with his own childish handwriting.

TO BELLA DO NOT OPEN UNTIL CHRISTMAS.

He smiled.

“I argued.

Isabella hated asking for help.

Richard’s concerns were not entirely invented.

But his response to them turned concern into control.

One journal entry read:

Dad thinks if he is partly right, he gets to be completely in charge.

Ethan read it twice.

Sophie asked, “What does that mean?”

“It means key?”

“No.”

Renee examined the clasp.

“It’s broken.”

Daniel opened it gently with a screwdriver from his car.

Inside was not a diary.

It was a collection of unsent letters.

The first addressed Richard.

The second Margaret.

The third Ethan.

The final one to Isabella herself.

Ethan opened his.

It was dated two days after the graduation she had missed.

He read silently.

Then handed it to Sophie.

“You can read this one.”

She looked surprised.

“Why?”

“Because I think she wrote it for herself more than me.”

Sophie read slowly.

Dear that she had waited for a reply to her graduation letter.

None came.

She assumed Ethan had chosen Richard.

But a sentence near the middle showed doubt.

You never
