The truth is, I was waiting to become a better man before you learned what kind of man I had been.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan\u2019s voice failed on the final words.<\/p>\n<p>He lowered the page.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret was crying silently.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie looked uncomfortable with the adults\u2019 grief but did not try to interrupt it.<\/p>\n<p>After a moment, Ethan continued.<\/p>\n<p>Richard wrote that people did not become better by hiding what they had done.<\/p>\n<p>They became better by telling the truth and accepting what truth cost them.<\/p>\n<p>The night he wrote the letter, he had decided to call Ethan the next morning.<\/p>\n<p>He included our old address.<\/p>\n<p>He included Sophie\u2019s school.<\/p>\n<p>He instructed Ethan not to approach Sophie directly without first speaking to us.<\/p>\n<p>And then came the sentence that broke him.<\/p>\n<p>You have a niece who deserves the chance to know that her mother never stopped loving you.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan covered his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie climbed down from her chair.<\/p>\n<p>She walked to him.<\/p>\n<p>He lowered one hand.<\/p>\n<p>She hugged him.<\/p>\n<p>He held her tightly.<\/p>\n<p>Neither spoke.<\/p>\n<p>When Ethan could read again, only a few paragraphs remained.<\/p>\n<p>Richard asked him not to defend what he had done.<\/p>\n<p>Not to turn Richard\u2019s mistakes into a misunderstanding.<\/p>\n<p>Not to tell Sophie her grandfather had always made the right choices because he had loved her.<\/p>\n<p>Love, he wrote, was not an excuse.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>Tell her I loved her enough at the end to understand that loving someone does not give you ownership of their life.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie rested her chin on Ethan\u2019s shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs that about me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s ownership?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you act like something belongs to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI belong to Mom and Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I opened my mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel beat me to it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie turned.<\/p>\n<p>He smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou belong to yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI live with you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDefinitely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou tell me when to go to bed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlso definitely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen I kind of belong to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTemporary administrative authority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt means he thinks he\u2019s funny.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan actually laughed.<\/p>\n<p>The tension in the room loosened.<\/p>\n<p>Then he reached the final lines.<\/p>\n<p>If I have the chance, I will say all of this to you myself.<\/p>\n<p>If I do not, find Sophie.<\/p>\n<p>Tell her about Isabella before you tell her about me.<\/p>\n<p>Give her the memories I helped keep from her mother.<\/p>\n<p>Do better than I did.<\/p>\n<p>Dad.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan lowered the paper.<\/p>\n<p>For a long time, he stared at the signature.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret whispered, \u201cI should have given you that years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She flinched.<\/p>\n<p>He did not soften the truth.<\/p>\n<p>But neither did he raise his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret looked toward Richard\u2019s desk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I found it three days after the funeral.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was angry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pressed her palms together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt Richard for dying before explaining himself. At Isabella for dying before we fixed anything. At myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice shook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd at you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou had built your own life. You hardly came home except on holidays. You seemed fine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you punished me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut maybe part of me resented that you escaped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie looked from one to the other.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was afraid giving you the letter would make you hate your father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou let me believe something false instead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Sophie lost four more years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret bowed her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sentence hurt everyone.<\/p>\n<p>There was no way around it.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie climbed back into her chair.<\/p>\n<p>She studied Margaret.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy do grown-ups keep hiding letters?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret laughed once through tears.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wish I had a better answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was so simple that nobody could argue with it.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie pointed toward the file.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre there more?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe six I told you about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we read them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>One by one, she laid them out chronologically.<\/p>\n<p>Two were addressed to Ethan.<\/p>\n<p>One to Margaret.<\/p>\n<p>Two to Richard.<\/p>\n<p>The sixth was addressed simply:<\/p>\n<p>My family.<\/p>\n<p>The earliest had been written before Sophie\u2019s birth.<\/p>\n<p>The latest, only four months before the accident.<\/p>\n<p>Together, they told a story neither Ethan nor Margaret had known in full.<\/p>\n<p>Isabella had tried repeatedly to reopen contact.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes angrily.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes gently.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes through direct requests.<\/p>\n<p>She had written that she did not need Richard to approve of her marriage.<\/p>\n<p>She needed him to stop punishing everyone else for it.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter to Margaret, she wrote:<\/p>\n<p>I keep waiting for you to choose something out loud.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret cried when Ethan read that sentence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI deserved that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie asked, \u201cWhat did she want you to choose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret took a long time to answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo choose her enough to disagree with Grandpa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was weak.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan looked at his mother.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cScared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret glanced at him.<\/p>\n<p>He continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t make it harmless. But you were scared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie returned to the letters.<\/p>\n<p>The last one, addressed to the entire family, was different.<\/p>\n<p>Less angry.<\/p>\n<p>Isabella wrote that Sophie had begun standing while holding onto furniture.<\/p>\n<p>That Michael believed she would walk early.<\/p>\n<p>That motherhood had made Isabella tired of keeping old fights alive.<\/p>\n<p>She invited Richard, Margaret, and Ethan to visit.<\/p>\n<p>No conditions.<\/p>\n<p>No apology required first.<\/p>\n<p>Just come.<\/p>\n<p>There was a date at the top.<\/p>\n<p>Four months before the accident.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe invited us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d Margaret whispered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Dad show you this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou never saw it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret\u2019s answer seemed genuine.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan looked at the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>It had been opened.<\/p>\n<p>Richard had read it.<\/p>\n<p>He had not shared it.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie touched the paper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey could have met me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one corrected her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>She looked at the date again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey had four months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie turned toward Richard\u2019s desk.<\/p>\n<p>Not angry.<\/p>\n<p>Not exactly.<\/p>\n<p>She looked disappointed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was enough time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret began crying again.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie watched her for a moment.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said, \u201cBut now isn\u2019t too late for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie pointed between Margaret and Ethan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret\u2019s face crumpled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She reached for Sophie\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, sweetheart.
