He said you both agreed it would be better not to interfere with the placement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan stared at the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat never happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me you agreed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI argued with him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I watched Sophie.<\/p>\n<p>She was sitting perfectly still beside Daniel, both hands between her knees.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan\u2019s voice sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told him I wanted to find her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEthan, I didn\u2019t know that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you ever ask me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His mother did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>He laughed once, without humor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Of course not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEthan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He glanced at Sophie.<\/p>\n<p>His anger changed immediately.<\/p>\n<p>He crouched near the coffee table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom,\u201d he said more carefully, \u201cSophie is here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The woman inhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then the voice changed in a way none of us had expected.<\/p>\n<p>It cracked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie looked at Ethan.<\/p>\n<p>He nodded toward the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can say hello if you want.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHello.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was a sharp breath from the speaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHello?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m Sophie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The woman began crying.<\/p>\n<p>Not loudly.<\/p>\n<p>Not theatrically.<\/p>\n<p>Just the helpless sound of someone failing to keep control of her breathing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, sweetheart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>She did not know what to do with the intensity on the other end.<\/p>\n<p>She said the first practical thing that came to mind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you Ethan\u2019s mom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A wet laugh escaped the woman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat means you\u2019re my grandma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The crying worsened.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan looked down.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie waited.<\/p>\n<p>Then asked, \u201cWhat\u2019s your name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It took several seconds before the woman answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMargaret.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie repeated it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandma Margaret.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret made a sound that was almost a sob.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked away.<\/p>\n<p>I felt my eyes burn again.<\/p>\n<p>It had happened so fast.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday Sophie\u2019s known family history fit inside a cardboard box.<\/p>\n<p>Tonight she had an uncle beside her and a grandmother crying through a phone.<\/p>\n<p>But Sophie was not swept away by the romance of reunion.<\/p>\n<p>She had questions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know my mom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret answered immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was my daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she look like me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she like you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question silenced everyone.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret took a long breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie\u2019s honesty would have been funny in almost any other room.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret seemed to understand that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d she said. \u201cIt isn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie waited.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother and I loved each other. But when she left home, I didn\u2019t do enough to fix things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou stayed with Grandpa Richard?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he was my husband.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t answer it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel rubbed his mouth to hide a reaction.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret gave a quiet, pained laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot exactly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf making everything worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie tilted her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid it get better?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret did not answer immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie nodded as though that proved something obvious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat happens when people don\u2019t talk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan looked at the ceiling.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret laughed through her tears.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou sound exactly like Isabella when she was angry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie brightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReally?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she sound like?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe would ask a question she already knew the answer to and then stare at you until you admitted you were wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve noticed,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret\u2019s voice softened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs your mother there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mom now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I moved closer to the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHello.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHello, Margaret.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The name felt strange in my mouth.<\/p>\n<p>For seven years, she had been an absence I did not know existed.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret took a breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know your name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I told her.<\/p>\n<p>She repeated it carefully.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said, \u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor taking care of her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My first instinct was to reject the wording.<\/p>\n<p>Taking care sounded temporary.<\/p>\n<p>Clinical.<\/p>\n<p>Like babysitting.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret seemed to hear it too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.
