I hope you get my eyes and his patience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael protested.<\/p>\n<p>Isabella ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope you know where you come from without feeling like it tells you where you have to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Ethan.<\/p>\n<p>He had tears running down his face now.<\/p>\n<p>Isabella continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if our family is still being ridiculous by the time you\u2019re old enough to understand any of this\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her smile faded slightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026I\u2019m going to fix it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan looked at the screen as though he had never heard the line before.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps he had not watched this file since Richard\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the sentence only meant something now.<\/p>\n<p>Michael asked quietly, \u201cYou mean your dad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Isabella nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Ethan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie looked at Ethan.<\/p>\n<p>He covered her hand with his.<\/p>\n<p>On screen, Isabella sighed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI miss my brother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI keep thinking I\u2019ll call him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen call him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know if Dad is still listening to his phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s eighteen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen Ethan can choose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Isabella looked away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the problem. I don\u2019t know what he\u2019s choosing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie watched him instead of the video for a moment.<\/p>\n<p>Then she looked back.<\/p>\n<p>Michael said, \u201cWrite him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan\u2019s eyes opened.<\/p>\n<p>On screen, Isabella added, \u201cNo answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room became unbearably still.<\/p>\n<p>We all knew now why.<\/p>\n<p>Richard had kept the letter.<\/p>\n<p>Isabella had believed Ethan chose silence.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan had believed Isabella chose absence.<\/p>\n<p>A family rupture had survived because one man had stood between two people who both wanted the same thing.<\/p>\n<p>Michael put an arm around Isabella.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTry again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then she looked into the camera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want this baby growing up with people missing from her life just because the adults were too stubborn to apologize.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie whispered, \u201cShe means me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recording continued for another minute.<\/p>\n<p>Then the image jumped.<\/p>\n<p>A second clip began.<\/p>\n<p>Different day.<\/p>\n<p>Different room.<\/p>\n<p>Isabella sat near a crib.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie was already born.<\/p>\n<p>Tiny.<\/p>\n<p>Wrapped in a pale blanket.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie made a sound somewhere between a laugh and a sob.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I put my arm around her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Isabella leaned toward the crib.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay, Sophie. him again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She glanced toward someone offscreen.<\/p>\n<p>Probably Michael.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo more waiting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie leaned closer to the laptop.<\/p>\n<p>Isabella touched one finger to the baby\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd one day, you\u2019re going to know everybody who loves you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recording ended.<\/p>\n<p>Black screen.<\/p>\n<p>No music.<\/p>\n<p>No final message.<\/p>\n<p>Just the small reflection of the five of us sitting in the darkened room.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie began crying.<\/p>\n<p>Quietly at first.<\/p>\n<p>I pulled her toward me.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan rubbed her back.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel moved closer from the other side.<\/p>\n<p>No one told her not to cry.<\/p>\n<p>No one tried to make the moment positive.<\/p>\n<p>She had heard her dead mother\u2019s voice for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>She had watched her parents laugh.<\/p>\n<p>She had heard Isabella promise to repair a family she did not live long enough to repair.<\/p>\n<p>There was no reason to rush Sophie away from the grief of that.<\/p>\n<p>After a while, she wiped her face with both hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was going to call you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut she died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo she couldn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie looked angry again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt Grandpa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan took a breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re allowed to be angry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStill?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She considered that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you love him confusing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For several minutes, Sophie said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Then she looked at the frozen progress bar on the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan we watch it again?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I expected Ethan to hesitate.<\/p>\n<p>He did not.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The second time, Sophie laughed more.<\/p>\n<p>She noticed details.<\/p>\n<p>Isabella\u2019s bracelet.<\/p>\n<p>Michael\u2019s crooked grin.<\/p>\n<p>The way her own newborn hand opened and closed.<\/p>\n<p>She asked Ethan whether Isabella always talked with her hands.<\/p>\n<p>He said yes.<\/p>\n<p>She asked if Michael really lacked patience.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel said the video suggested otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>By the third viewing, grief had not disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>It had changed shape.<\/p>\n<p>The recording was no longer merely evidence of loss.<\/p>\n<p>It was becoming memory Sophie could borrow.<\/p>\n<p>When the final clip ended again, \u201cAnd our beach picture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at Ethan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd maybe one with you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He blinked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was no ceremony in it.<\/p>\n<p>No hesitation.<\/p>\n<p>The word simply belonged.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan looked down, overwhelmed.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie continued planning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can make three pictures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour assignment only asked for one,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen Mrs. Parker can change the assignment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat may not be how school works.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt should.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She turned to Ethan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re the principal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan finally laughed too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll see what I can do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then his phone buzzed on the coffee table.<\/p>\n<p>He glanced at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>He picked up the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had forgotten about her.<\/p>\n<p>So, apparently, had Sophie.<\/p>\n<p>She sat upright.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy grandma?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan stared at the incoming call.<\/p>\n<p>The room went still again.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes she know about me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan did not answer immediately.<\/p>\n<p>And from the look
