Receipts. Arguments. He\u2019d make notes on envelopes, photographs, even grocery lists. He probably told himself keeping it was different from destroying it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t make sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan looked at the date.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was six weeks before graduation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened then?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI waited.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer came immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor Isabella?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He leaned back against the couch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know if she would come. But I kept looking toward the doors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His gaze drifted somewhere far beyond the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur ceremony was in the school gym. I remember every time the doors opened, I thought maybe it was her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie was very still now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe didn\u2019t come because she thought you didn\u2019t answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know she wrote?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd she thought you got it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie looked furious now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s bad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReally bad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan did not soften the answer.<\/p>\n<p>She pointed at Richard\u2019s photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did he do that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan looked at the man who had been his father.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause sometimes people get so sure they are protecting their family that they stop noticing they\u2019re hurting it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sentence lingered.<\/p>\n<p>I thought of my own years guarding the box.<\/p>\n<p>The comparison was uncomfortable.<\/p>\n<p>I had not hidden letters intentionally.<\/p>\n<p>I had not blocked contact.<\/p>\n<p>But I had still decided what Sophie could see.<\/p>\n<p>I had still believed my judgment was safer than her questions.<\/p>\n<p>That realization had been growing since the school office.<\/p>\n<p>Now it sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie asked, \u201cDid Grandpa say sorry?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe he was going to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan did not sound convinced.<\/p>\n<p>He picked up the envelope again.<\/p>\n<p>There was something inside besides the letter.<\/p>\n<p>A small photograph slid onto the rug.<\/p>\n<p>We all looked down.<\/p>\n<p>Isabella stood in profile, visibly pregnant.<\/p>\n<p>Michael had one hand against her stomach.<\/p>\n<p>She was laughing.<\/p>\n<p>On the back, Isabella had written:<\/p>\n<p>Your niece kicking like crazy. She already has opinions.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie squealed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s me!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She grabbed the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s me inside her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d Ethan said.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie held it almost against her nose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was in there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s generally how it works.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She showed me the photograph as though I had not been sitting three feet away.<\/p>\n<p>I took it carefully.<\/p>\n<p>Isabella\u2019s face was turned enough that I could see her smile.<\/p>\n<p>She looked young.<\/p>\n<p>Much younger than I remembered imagining her.<\/p>\n<p>Pregnancy had made her rounder through the cheeks.<\/p>\n<p>Michael was looking at her instead of the camera.<\/p>\n<p>There was such obvious affection in the photograph that I understood instantly why Richard\u2019s objections must have felt unbearable to her.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie looked at Ethan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you ever see this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow you did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her simple acceptance seemed to steady him.<\/p>\n<p>He folded Isabella\u2019s letter.<\/p>\n<p>Not back into the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>He kept it in his lap.<\/p>\n<p>Then he looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said Dad brought this box himself?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long after the accident?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA few weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd he told you to give it to Sophie when she started asking?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan\u2019s expression turned thoughtful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat means he kept Isabella\u2019s letter to me for years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen put it in the box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel said what I had been thinking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe that was his way of trying to correct it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout actually telling me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Daniel said. \u201cNot enough. But maybe he knew Sophie might eventually connect you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe envelope had your name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat assumes someone knew where to find me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were local.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo was Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence again.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the newspaper clipping.<\/p>\n<p>Richard\u2019s partial photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Isabella and Michael.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan\u2019s letter.<\/p>\n<p>It was beginning to feel less like a random assortment of saved memories and more like something Richard had assembled deliberately.<\/p>\n<p>Not perfectly.<\/p>\n<p>Not bravely.<\/p>\n<p>But deliberately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe there\u2019s more,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie immediately leaned over the box.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She began removing the remaining items.<\/p>\n<p>We stopped her before she could scatter everything.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel spread a blanket over the floor and arranged papers carefully.<\/p>\n<p>Medical records.<\/p>\n<p>Birth announcements.<\/p>\n<p>A church bulletin.<\/p>\n<p>A folded map.<\/p>\n<p>Two more envelopes.<\/p>\n<p>One was addressed to Sophie.<\/p>\n<p>The other had no name.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan picked up the nameless one.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a note in Richard\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>Short.<\/p>\n<p>Three paragraphs.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan read the first line and stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I asked.<\/p>\n<p>He handed the page to me.<\/p>\n<p>My hands went cold.<\/p>\n<p>If Sophie ever wants the truth about why Isabella stayed away, do not tell her only that we fought.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Ethan.<\/p>\n<p>He had already gone pale.<\/p>\n<p>I kept reading.<\/p>\n<p>Richard wrote that he had made choices after Isabella left.<\/p>\n<p>He had returned mail.<\/p>\n<p>He had refused calls.<\/p>\n<p>He had told relatives not to give her information about Ethan.<\/p>\n<p>He had convinced himself that keeping the family divided would force her to come back on his terms.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, it had taught her how to live without him.<\/p>\n<p>The final paragraph was worse.<\/p>\n<p>I knew about Sophie before she was born. I knew Isabella wanted Ethan in the child\u2019s life. I stopped that too.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie was trying to read over my arm.<\/p>\n<p>I lowered the page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Ethan.<\/p>\n<p>His expression made clear that he did not want Sophie shielded with lies, but neither of us wanted to hand a seven-year-old the rawest language of an adult confession.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt says your grandfather made some mistakes,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat mistakes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe kept your mom and Uncle Ethan from talking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie\u2019s face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn purpose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he was angry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s stupid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one corrected her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan reached for the note.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom, Richard had written one more line.<\/p>\n<p>I am going to make this right before it is too late.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel asked quietly.<\/p>\n<p>No one knew.<\/p>\n<p>Richard had delivered the box.<\/p>\n<p>He had met Sophie.<\/p>\n<p>He had preserved the letters.<\/p>\n<p>But he had not reunited Ethan with Isabella before the accident.<\/p>\n<p>And he had not reunited Ethan with Sophie afterward.<\/p>\n<p>Not directly.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie crawled closer to Ethan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe this is him doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pointed at everything spread across the rug.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou found me because of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No adult in the room had an answer better than that.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan looked at the newspaper clipping again.<\/p>\n<p>The tiny piece of Richard\u2019s face at the edge.<\/p>\n<p>Then at Sophie.<\/p>\n<p>Something in him softened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie leaned against his arm.<\/p>\n<p>It was the first time she touched him without asking.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan went completely still.<\/p>\n<p>Then very carefully put one arm around her shoulders.<\/p>\n<p>She did not pull away.<\/p>\n<p>For a long time, they sat there looking at the evidence of all the years between them.<\/p>\n<p>At last, Ethan said, \u201cI have something at my house too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie lifted her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore pictures?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf Mom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I see them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTomorrow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf your parents say yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She turned immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before I could answer, Ethan added, \u201cThere\u2019s also something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His tone changed.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan looked at Sophie, then me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA recording.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn old home video.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith Isabella?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow old?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom when she was pregnant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie\u2019s mouth fell open.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd in part of it, she talks about you.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lastestdrama.com\/?p=1402\">Click here to continue reading: PART 8: Sophie Heard Her Mother\u2019s Voice for the First Time, but the Last Minute of the Recording Revealed a Promise Isabella Never Got to Keep<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ethan read the letter in silence first.
