We need to discuss this."

His voice sounded strained.

I closed my eyes.

We need to discuss this.

I had heard versions of that sentence for years.

After his father insulted me.

After Madison made another remark about my parents.

After I told him something had to change.

There was always a discussion.

There was always an explanation.

There was always a reason I should wait until another day to expect better treatment.

I had spent most of my marriage waiting for that day.

I was done waiting.

I didn't move toward the lock.

Charles spoke over Daniel.

"Stop making this harder than it needs to be."

I looked at the security camera.

Daniel was standing beneath it.

He knew the camera was there.

He knew I could see him.

And still he had brought Charles.

I couldn't understand that.

Our marriage was already ending.

I had told Daniel I had consulted a divorce attorney.

He knew I was reviewing serious financial irregularities.

He knew his own office computer was connected to the deleted records.

Yet he had arrived with the very person I needed distance from.

I wondered whether he had chosen to come.

I wondered whether Charles had pressured him.

I wondered what he believed would happen if I opened the door.

Would Charles lecture me?

Would the strangers place documents in front of me?

Would Daniel ask me to sign something?

Would they try to convince me that the investigation was a misunderstanding?

I didn't know.

I refused to create answers for questions I couldn't yet prove.

But I didn't need to know their plan to protect my own space.

My phone vibrated.

I looked down.

A message from Grant.

I read it once.

Then again.

He was no longer willing to meet at the place we had arranged.

Someone was following him.

I felt my mouth go dry.

Grant had warned me about the company systems.

Now he believed someone was physically following him.

I looked toward the door.

Charles was still outside.

I couldn't tell whether the two situations were connected.

I didn't have evidence that they were.

But I couldn't ignore the timing.

Another message appeared.

Grant wanted me to get somewhere safe.

He included a phone number.

I didn't recognize it.

I stared at the screen.

I had agreed to meet Grant because I believed he could explain financial transactions.

Now he was telling me not to meet him.

And he wanted me to call somebody else.

I didn't know whether to trust that either.

A few minutes earlier, I had been preparing to leave with the manila folder.

Now I was standing in my hallway afraid to unlock my own front door.

I looked at the folder in my hand.

The missing first page bothered me.

The $1.85 million transfer bothered me.

But the thing that frightened me most was how quickly my home had stopped feeling private.

Someone had entered without leaving obvious signs.

Someone had removed a specific document.

Someone had searched digital files in places I had considered secure.

And now Charles was insisting I open the door.

I remembered the board chairman's warning.

Don't go to the office.

Don't use the company system.

Be careful with Daniel.

I had listened to the first two instructions.

I was beginning to understand the third.

Charles knocked harder.

"Claire."

I took a breath.

Then I reached for my phone.

I called the police.

I kept the explanation simple.

I told the dispatcher there were people outside my house who would not leave.

I explained that I did not want to open the door.

I didn't begin describing Meridian Advisory.

I didn't explain the Northstar contract.

I didn't discuss the company guarantee.

Those were serious matters, but they weren't why I needed help at that moment.

I needed the people outside to leave.

The dispatcher listened.

I gave the information requested.

Then I stayed inside.

I didn't tell Charles I had called.

I didn't tell Daniel.

I simply waited.

The knocking continued.

Then I heard Daniel speaking more quietly.

I couldn't make out every word.

Charles responded sharply.

For a moment, their voices overlapped.

I stood against the hallway wall and listened.

I didn't enjoy it.

I didn't feel powerful.

I didn't feel pleased that my husband was outside asking to be let in.

I felt exhausted.

And ashamed of how familiar that exhaustion was.

For years, I had taken responsibility for keeping disagreements from becoming public.

I had protected the Harrington name.

I had tried to avoid embarrassing Daniel.

I had tried to keep my parents from seeing how badly his family treated me.

Now I was calling the police because I didn't feel comfortable opening my front door.

That was how far things had gone.

I thought about the anniversary dinner.

My mother had done nothing to deserve what happened.

She had worn a white blouse.

She had tried to be polite.

My father had worn his good suit.

He had been willing to sit through another difficult family gathering because it mattered to me.

Then Madison had thrown wine.

And Daniel had looked down.

I remembered that movement clearly.

He hadn't been confused.

He hadn't been unable to understand what was happening.

He had chosen not to intervene.

Now he was asking me to open the door.

I wondered whether he understood the connection.

The police arrived before I had to make that choice.

I heard the change outside first.

Daniel stopped speaking.

Charles's voice rose.

A car door shut.

I moved toward the window.

I could see officers speaking with the men outside.

The two strangers were no longer there.

I hadn't watched them leave.

I didn't know exactly when they went.

But the black briefcase was gone.

So was the envelope.

Daniel and Charles remained.

The officers spoke to them.

Daniel looked tired.

His shoulders seemed lower than I remembered.

He looked toward the house.

Our eyes met through the window.

For one moment, I felt an ache that surprised me.

I had loved him.

I had built a marriage with him.

I had planned to grow older with him.

I didn't want him frightened or humiliated.

I didn't want our marriage to end with police standing outside the home we had bought together.

But that didn't mean I had to open the door.

I looked away.

Charles was speaking to an officer.

His gestures were sharp.

He seemed offended that the situation was being treated as something requiring police attention.

I couldn't hear every word.

But I could see his frustration.

He had spent his life in rooms where people listened when he spoke.

He was not enjoying being told that his position didn't entitle him to enter my house.

An officer remained calm while Charles argued.

Eventually, Charles was told that a disagreement within a family did not give him the right to remain where he wasn't welcome.

I watched him react.

He didn't look embarrassed.

He looked angry.

That was Charles.

Even when someone set a reasonable boundary, he treated it as an insult.

Daniel was quieter.

He appeared to answer the officers' questions.

Then he looked toward the house again.

I didn't move.

I couldn't explain to him through a window why I was doing this.

And I no longer believed I owed him another explanation before protecting myself.

After a while, the officers allowed Daniel to leave.

Charles argued longer.

He seemed unwilling to accept that the visit was over.

But eventually he left too.

I watched until they were gone.

Then I checked the door.

Both deadbolts were secure.

I looked through the window again.

The driveway was quiet.

The black briefcase was gone.

The thick envelope was gone.

And I still didn't know what Charles had intended to do with either one.

I didn't follow them.

I didn't call Daniel.

I didn't try to arrange a different conversation.

I walked back into the hallway.

Then I sat on the floor.

The folder rested beside me.

I stared at the wall for a long time.

I had spent the morning trying to understand numbers.

One million, eight hundred fifty thousand dollars.

Three years.

Six months of investigation.

A missing summary sheet.

A deleted transaction trail.

An account accessed at 6:42.

A phone call at 7:14.

Now I couldn't think about any of them.

I could only think about how tired I was.

I had spent years being the capable person.

The person who handled the difficult paperwork.

The person who understood the financial risks.

The person who could speak calmly while Charles tried to intimidate her.

The person who could comfort her parents after an awful dinner.

The person who could tell her husband their marriage was over without raising her voice.

People sometimes mistook that kind of calm for strength.

Sometimes it was.

Sometimes it was simply what I did because falling apart never seemed convenient.

Sitting on the hallway floor, I finally cried.

I cried because I was afraid.

I cried because I had lost the marriage I thought I had.

I cried because my mother had been humiliated.

I cried because I didn't know whether Daniel had been used by his father or had chosen to help him.

And I cried because none of the choices in front of me looked easy.

The house was quiet.

I could hear my own breathing.

The folder lay open beside my knee.

I looked at the documents without picking them up.

I had thought that proving the financial irregularities would be the difficult part.

But evidence was only one piece of the problem.

There were people attached to those numbers.

People I had eaten dinner with.

People I had trusted.

People who knew where I lived.

That made the numbers personal in a way I had never wanted.

I wiped my face.

The paper in the folder hadn't changed.

The bank transfer still existed.

The names still appeared where they appeared.

The unanswered questions were still there.

I couldn't solve them by crying.

But I didn't need to be ashamed of crying either.

For once, I allowed myself to feel everything without immediately trying to fix it.

I thought about Dad.

At the dinner, he had told Charles that my marriage didn't give anyone ownership over me.

I hadn't fully understood how much I needed those words.

Now I did.

Charles could threaten me.

He could refuse to answer my questions.

He could try to control what happened inside Harrington Group.

But he couldn't require me to open my home to him.

He couldn't demand that I surrender the records.

And he couldn't decide whether I was allowed to leave his family.

I picked up my phone.

The message from Grant was still there.

He had given me a new number.

I didn't know the person who would answer.

I didn't know whether the call would help.

But the man who had been afraid to meet me was directing me toward someone else.

Someone he believed could understand what was happening.

I looked at the locked door one last time.

Then I dialed the number.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: A Federal Investigator Told Me the Money Trail Was Far Larger Than I Knew, but
