14 – My Father Started Therapy And Our Quiet Dinners Helped Me Understand How Much Of My Childhood We Had Lost To Fear

The first few dinners in my father's new apartment felt strange.

Not uncomfortable.

Just unfamiliar.

I was used to arriving at his house with a plan.

I would eat beforehand.

I would keep the visit short.

I would avoid saying anything that might upset Deardra.

And if she brought up my allergy, I would change the subject.

Those habits had become part of visiting my father.

Now I didn't need them.

I could arrive hungry.

I could sit down without examining everyone else's plate.

I could ask about his day without wondering whether Deardra was listening from another room.

It was such a small change.

And yet it made me realize how much tension I'd accepted as normal.

One evening, my father asked whether I wanted more food.

I looked at him.

Then at the plate.

There was nothing dangerous in the meal.

Nothing hidden.

Nothing that required me to question whether someone was trying to prove a point.

I accepted another serving.

My father didn't make a comment about it.

He simply continued eating.

That ordinary moment stayed with me.

For years, food had been the thing Deardra used to challenge me.

She had turned meals into arguments about whether my mother had raised me properly.

She had treated my refusal to eat nuts as evidence that I didn't respect her.

And eventually, she'd used a casserole to test whether I would survive something she believed was imaginary.

Now I could eat with my father without defending myself.

I hadn't understood how much I missed that until it happened.

Our dinners became a routine.

Twice a week, I visited his apartment.

Sometimes I brought food.

Sometimes we prepared something simple together.

We kept his dietary restrictions in mind.

His cardiologist had been clear about the changes he needed to make after surgery.

He was trying to follow them.

Not perfectly.

But seriously.

That mattered.

I wanted him to recover.

I wanted him to be able to enjoy the years ahead without another major medical emergency.

He still complained about decaffeinated coffee.

I still reminded him to listen to his doctors.

Those conversations were easier now.

There wasn't anyone nearby insisting that medical advice was exaggerated.

I remembered how Deardra had questioned my allergy.

I wondered whether my father now recognized how dangerous that attitude could be for him too.

He never needed to explain that to me.

I could see he was taking his health more seriously.

He attended rehabilitation.

He followed up with his medical team.

And eventually, he told me he had begun therapy.

I didn't know what to say at first.

My father had never been comfortable discussing his feelings.

When I was a child, he showed love through actions.

He worked.

He coached baseball.

He took me fishing.

If something broke, he fixed it.

But emotional conversations were difficult for him.

After my mother died, we rarely discussed how much we missed her.

We simply kept living.

I had assumed that was how he coped.

Now he was seeing a therapist.

I asked how it was going.

He said it was uncomfortable.

Then he admitted that he thought it was helping.

I listened.

He didn't give me every detail.

I didn't ask for them.

That was his private work.

But he told me he'd started talking about the years after Catherine died.

The loneliness.

The pressure of raising a son while working away from home.

The fear of coming back to an empty house.

And the relief he'd felt when Deardra entered his life.

I remembered the first time he'd told me about meeting her.

He had smiled.

I hadn't seen him look that happy in years.

At fourteen, I wanted him to be happy.

At fifteen, I wanted to be reasonable.

And for a long time afterward, I kept telling myself that if Deardra made him happy, I could tolerate the rest.

I thought about that while he spoke.

We had both been trying to protect something.

He wanted to protect himself from loneliness.

I wanted to protect the relationship I had left with my only living parent.

And neither of us had been willing to admit how badly the arrangement was hurting us.

My father said therapy was forcing him to examine decisions he'd avoided thinking about.

He had spent years telling himself that Deardra's comments weren't serious.

Whenever she criticized my allergy, he treated it as an opinion.

Whenever she mocked my mother, he told himself she was frustrated.

Whenever I refused her food, he tried to end the disagreement before it became an argument.

He hadn't wanted to choose sides.

But by avoiding the conflict, he had allowed Deardra to continue.

I remembered saying something similar to him on the porch before Thanksgiving.

Back then, he had admitted that fear controlled him.

Now he was beginning to understand what that fear had cost.

I didn't know whether therapy would change him permanently.

I hoped it would.

But I also understood that change took time.

He couldn't undo fourteen years in a few conversations.

Neither could I.

Sometimes, during dinner, a memory would return unexpectedly.

A Thanksgiving argument.

A Christmas dessert.

The way Deardra would look offended when I refused something unsafe.

My father's expression as he tried to calm her.

I could remember those moments without wanting to discuss them.

Then I would look across the table.

My father was sitting there.

Eating.

Asking me about work.

Trying.

And I would remind myself that the present didn't have to repeat the past.

That didn't mean everything was forgiven.

I hadn't reached some perfect understanding.

There were still moments when I felt angry.

Not at Deardra alone.

At my father.

I thought about the years he had watched her criticize Catherine.

My mother had died when I was eleven.

She hadn't been there to defend herself.

And Deardra had used her absence to explain away my medical condition.

That was one of the cruelest parts of the entire experience.

She hadn't simply questioned a diagnosis.

She had blamed the woman who had spent years protecting me.

Sometimes I wanted to ask my father why he'd allowed that.

Then I remembered he'd already answered.

He had been afraid.

Afraid of being alone.

Afraid of another failed marriage.

Afraid of conflict.

The explanation didn't excuse what happened.

But it helped me understand it.

And understanding made it possible to decide what kind of relationship I wanted with him now.

I didn't want to spend the rest of his life punishing him for every mistake.

I also didn't want to pretend those mistakes hadn't happened.

So I tried to do something simpler.

I told the truth when it mattered.

If something hurt, I said so.

If I needed a boundary, I explained it.

And if he disagreed, I didn't immediately retreat to keep the peace.

That was new for both of us.

My father had spent years avoiding difficult conversations.

I had spent years learning not to start them.

Now we were trying to speak more directly.

Sometimes it felt awkward.

Sometimes we misunderstood each other.

But we didn't stop talking.

I began noticing small changes.

He asked whether I was comfortable with things instead of assuming.

He listened when I explained why something mattered.

He didn't tell me I was too sensitive.

And he stopped treating my allergy as a topic that required negotiation.

I hadn't realized how much I needed that.

I remembered being a teenager at the dining room table.

Deardra would place a dish near me.

I would refuse.

Then I would look toward my father.

Waiting.

He usually said something mild.

He reminded her that doctors had confirmed my allergy.

But he rarely insisted that the discussion end.

Now, when we ate together, there was no debate.

My medical condition was simply a fact.

I didn't have to prove it.

I didn't have to defend it.

I could spend the evening talking about something else.

One night, we discussed my job.

I told him about a problem at the manufacturing company.

He asked questions.

I explained the mechanical issue and how we were approaching it.

He listened with the same interest he'd shown when I was younger.

I remembered being a boy who liked taking things apart to understand how they worked.

My father had encouraged that curiosity.

He'd been proud when I graduated from Eastern Kentucky University.

He'd been pleased when I got the engineering position in Lexington.

Those memories mattered too.

Deardra hadn't erased every good thing between us.

She had damaged our relationship.

But there was still something worth rebuilding.

I wanted to remember that.

As the weeks passed, I found myself looking forward to our dinners.

I didn't have to prepare emotionally before leaving home.

I didn't have to wonder whether Deardra would be in a bad mood.

I didn't have to calculate how quickly I could leave if she started another argument.

I could simply drive over.

Park.

Walk inside.

And spend time with my father.

Sometimes we ate quietly while he talked about rehabilitation.

Sometimes he asked about the dog I hoped to have one day.

Sometimes we remembered fishing at Dale Hollow.

Those conversations brought back parts of my childhood I'd almost forgotten.

There had been good days.

A lot of them.

Before Deardra.

Before every meal became something I had to survive.

I thought about Catherine.

How careful she had been.

How much she'd loved me.

And how her concern had shaped the habits that kept me alive.

For years, Deardra had turned those habits into something embarrassing.

Now I understood them differently.

My mother's precautions weren't evidence that she'd made me fearful.

They were evidence that she'd paid attention.

She had believed the doctors.

She had understood the risks.

She had protected me when I couldn't protect myself.

I wished I could tell her that I finally understood.

I also wished she could see my father trying to change.

I didn't know what she would think of everything that had happened.

I couldn't speak for her.

But I knew she had loved us both.

And I knew the family we'd built before her death had contained something worth remembering.

My father and I weren't going to recreate that old life.

Too much time had passed.

Too much had happened.

But we could make something honest from what remained.

One evening, as I prepared to leave, he thanked me for continuing to visit.

I looked at him.

I hadn't expected him to say that.

Then he admitted he'd been afraid I'd stop speaking to him after the legal case.

I understood why.

I'd been angry.

I'd been hurt.

And I'd had every reason to distance myself.

But I told him I wanted a relationship with him.

Not one controlled by Deardra.

Not one built around avoiding difficult conversations.

A real one.

He nodded.

For a moment, he looked as though he wanted to say more.

Then he simply thanked me again.

I drove home thinking about that exchange.

I had spent years believing my father would never choose to change.

Now he was living alone.

Attending therapy.

Taking care of his health.

And making room for a relationship with me that didn't depend on his wife's approval.

It wasn't a perfect ending.

There were still things we needed to work through.

But I no longer felt that every visit required me to sacrifice something.

I could love my father.

I could acknowledge his failures.

And I could allow him to become better without pretending the past had been harmless.

That was enough for now.
