3 – She Watched Me Finish Every Bite Of Her Special Casserole Before Revealing What She Had Hidden Inside My Food

The first few minutes of dinner felt almost normal.

That was the part I struggled with afterward.

Nobody was arguing.

Nobody was raising a voice.

My father looked more relaxed than I had seen him in weeks.

Colt was sitting at the table with his phone nearby.

Deardra moved between the food and her chair, making sure everyone had enough.

If someone had walked into the room without knowing our history, they might have thought we were a close family enjoying a quiet Saturday evening.

I wanted that picture to be true.

The roasted chicken smelled good.

The potatoes were warm.

The green beans were prepared the way my father liked them.

And the casserole sat among the other dishes as though it were just another part of the meal.

I had no reason to think that particular dish carried the danger.

Or at least, that was what I told myself.

Before eating, I asked again about the ingredients.

I tried to sound casual.

I didn't want my father to feel as though another argument was beginning.

Deardra repeated that she hadn't used any nuts.

She named the ingredients.

Sweet potatoes.

Sausage.

Seasonings.

The other things that went into preparing the dish.

She also assured me that she had prevented contact with anything unsafe.

I remember the spice jars.

She had brought them out as proof.

I looked at them.

They seemed ordinary.

Nothing about the labels raised an immediate concern.

She had anticipated the question and was ready with an answer.

At the time, that reassured me.

Later, I understood it differently.

She wasn't simply claiming she hadn't made a mistake.

She was telling me that she had taken precautions she knew I needed.

I had spent years explaining those precautions to her.

She knew exactly which words would make me feel safe.

I accepted a serving of the casserole.

It looked good.

It smelled good too.

I took a bite.

Nothing happened.

I took another.

The flavor was rich.

The sweet potatoes balanced the sausage.

It was the sort of dish I might have asked for again under different circumstances.

I didn't taste pecans.

I didn't notice anything that made me stop.

I continued eating.

My father talked.

I answered.

Colt looked at his phone.

Deardra watched the table.

I didn't pay much attention to how closely she was following my plate.

I was busy enjoying the rare feeling that nobody was trying to make a point.

I finished my chicken.

I ate the vegetables.

Then I finished the casserole.

The plate was empty.

I put my fork down.

And because I thought the evening was going well, I thanked Deardra.

I told her I liked what she'd made.

She smiled.

I expected her to look pleased.

Instead, she seemed satisfied in a way that made me uneasy.

She rested against the back of her chair.

Her arms folded.

There was a pause before she spoke.

I had seen that look before.

It was the expression she wore when she believed she'd won an argument.

I didn't understand what argument we were having.

Not until she started talking.

She pointed out that I had eaten the entire serving.

She seemed especially interested in the fact that I hadn't complained.

Then she said my mother had convinced me I was sick when I wasn't.

The room changed.

I felt it before anyone moved.

My father stopped smiling.

I looked at Deardra.

I asked what she meant.

She wasn't embarrassed.

She wasn't apologetic.

She seemed pleased to have everyone's attention.

Then she reached behind the bread basket.

There had been something sitting there that I hadn't noticed.

She picked it up.

An empty package.

I recognized the words on the front.

Chopped pecans.

For a second, I couldn't understand why she was showing it to me.

Then she explained.

She had put a full cup of pecans into the casserole.

She had ground them finely enough that I wouldn't recognize them.

She had done it deliberately.

She wanted to show me that I could eat tree nuts without becoming ill.

I stared at the package.

My brain kept returning to the same detail.

A full cup.

She hadn't accidentally used a spoon in the wrong bowl.

She hadn't forgotten to check a label.

She had taken a food she knew I couldn't eat, hidden it, and served it after promising me the meal was safe.

I looked at my father.

His face had gone pale.

Colt was no longer looking at his phone.

For a moment, nobody said anything.

Then I felt something strange in my mouth.

A faint tingling.

I knew that sensation.

I had known it since childhood.

I looked at the empty plate.

Then at the package in Deardra's hand.

My lips were beginning to feel different.

My tongue seemed heavier.

I swallowed.

It wasn't comfortable.

I tried again.

The second swallow frightened me.

My body was responding.

I stood abruptly.

The chair struck the wall behind me.

My hand went to my throat.

I knew what was happening before I could properly explain it.

Anaphylaxis.

I had been through allergic reactions before.

I knew how quickly the symptoms could become dangerous.

The tingling was no longer limited to my mouth.

Heat spread across my chest.

My tongue felt swollen.

I tried to draw a normal breath.

It didn't come easily.

I heard my father call my name.

Then he was standing.

He moved too quickly for a man recovering from major heart surgery.

He stumbled as he got up.

But he didn't stop.

He demanded to know where my epinephrine autoinjector was.

I had always kept an EpiPen in the kitchen drawer when visiting the house.

I hadn't checked it recently.

I had assumed it was still there.

That assumption became my second terrible mistake of the evening.

I moved toward the kitchen.

My father was calling for help.

Colt had picked up his phone.

I could hear pieces of the conversation around me, but my attention had narrowed to one problem.

I needed my medication.

I needed it immediately.

Deardra was still sitting down.

I looked toward her.

She didn't seem frightened.

She looked irritated.

As though I had deliberately interrupted the pleasant evening she'd arranged.

She told me to calm down.

She said I was making too much of it.

She insisted I had already eaten everything without trouble.

In her mind, the fact that I hadn't reacted during the first bite proved she had been right.

I tried to speak.

My throat wouldn't cooperate.

I wanted to tell her that reactions didn't follow the rules she had invented.

I wanted to explain that eating the food before showing symptoms didn't mean it was safe.

But I was struggling to breathe.

There was no room for another argument.

I reached the kitchen drawer.

I pulled it open.

There were ordinary things inside.

The kind of clutter that collected in every household.

But the EpiPen wasn't there.

I moved things around.

I looked again.

Nothing.

I remember the frustration of seeing so many useless objects when I needed only one.

I could feel my breathing getting worse.

My chest tightened.

My vision began to lose its sharpness.

Behind me, I heard Colt speaking loudly into his phone.

He had called 911.

He gave the address.

He explained that I was having a severe allergic reaction.

I wanted to thank him.

I couldn't.

My father came into the kitchen.

He looked in the drawer too.

The medication was gone.

Then he started searching elsewhere.

Deardra appeared in the doorway.

She kept insisting I was upsetting myself.

She said I was creating the reaction with my own fear.

My father demanded answers.

Where was the EpiPen?

Why wasn't it where I had left it?

Deardra didn't respond with the urgency the situation required.

She acted as though we were all exaggerating the danger.

Later, I learned the reason the medication was missing.

She had thrown it away months earlier.

She eventually admitted that to the paramedics.

At that moment, I didn't know.

All I knew was that the device I relied on wasn't in the drawer.

I leaned against the counter.

I tried to breathe.

Each breath sounded worse.

I was frightened.

There is no dignified way to describe that kind of fear.

When your throat begins closing, you stop thinking about arguments and pride.

You think about air.

You think about whether the next breath will arrive.

And you think about how badly you want to survive.

My father rushed into the hallway.

I heard a closet door.

Then another sound as he searched through stored things.

He came back holding an EpiPen.

It wasn't the one I'd left in the kitchen.

It was an old one.

The expiration date had passed more than a year earlier.

I knew it might not work properly.

My father knew too.

But it was all we had.

He administered it into my thigh.

I remember the sensation.

I remember his hand.

And I remember hearing Deardra continuing to complain in the doorway.

She still believed I was putting on a performance.

My father didn't answer her.

He was watching me.

The medication gave me a little more time.

Not enough to make everything safe.

But enough that I was still breathing when the emergency crew arrived.

I had moved into the living room.

Somewhere between the kitchen and the floor, my strength had begun to disappear.

I couldn't remain standing.

I ended up lying down, struggling to stay conscious.

My father stayed close.

Colt continued speaking to the dispatcher.

And Deardra remained convinced that the problem was my attitude.

I heard the paramedics enter.

Their voices sounded urgent but controlled.

They checked me.

They assessed my breathing and circulation.

They began emergency treatment.

I remember the stretcher.

I remember someone explaining that they were giving me epinephrine.

I remember my father's voice nearby.

Then the room began slipping away.

I had spent my whole life taking precautions against one kind of food.

My mother had protected me from it when I was too young to understand the risk.

I had avoided it through school, college, and adulthood.

And that night, I had eaten an entire serving because I trusted a woman who had promised it was safe.

I didn't know whether I would survive.

The last clear thing I understood was that the danger hadn't come from an accident.

Deardra had known.

She had known before I took the first bite.

And she had watched me finish.
