2 – While My Son Tried to Explain Away His Loan Application, I Found Myself Remembering Everything I Had Given Him

I knew something was wrong before Derek answered.

He had a particular way of becoming quiet when he didn't want to explain himself.

I had seen it many times.

That morning, in front of the villa, I recognized it immediately.

Robert was holding several pages.

Derek was staring at them.

Ray and Donna had stopped talking.

Megan looked confused.

I stood beside Robert and waited.

He explained that a loan application had been submitted identifying the Gulf Shores villa as property owned by Derek Ivers.

The problem was simple.

Derek didn't own it.

The recorded title showed that my trust held the property.

Robert said the lender would receive the documents needed to clarify that.

I watched Derek.

He shook his head.

"It's been misunderstood," he said.

Robert didn't raise his voice.

He allowed for the possibility that there might be an explanation.

But he didn't put the papers away.

Ray turned toward Derek.

"What loan?"

Megan was looking at her husband too.

I could see her trying to understand what she had just heard.

Then she spoke.

"You said there weren't any debts."

Derek's expression hardened.

"Megan, this isn't the time."

But she kept going.

She reminded him that he had said his business was doing well.

She had believed they could afford renovations.

She had believed they owned the property.

Now, with Robert standing there holding those papers, all of that certainty was gone.

I could only listen.

I hadn't known about the loan application either.

That bothered me more than I could explain.

Derek had never been a stranger.

He was my only son.

I knew what he had been like when he was younger.

I knew how quickly he could become discouraged when something didn't work.

I knew how much he appreciated it when I solved a difficult problem for him.

Yet I hadn't known what he was doing with my house.

I hadn't known he was telling people it belonged to him.

And I certainly hadn't known he was using it to represent his financial position.

I looked toward the villa.

The windows of my bedroom faced the driveway.

Behind them hung gray curtains that I had never chosen.

The walls I had painted coral had been partly covered with gray primer.

Somebody had begun changing the room before I had even agreed to leave it.

I thought about Arthur.

He had always liked seeing me make decisions about the house.

We hadn't had unlimited money.

We had worked with what we could afford.

Every improvement meant effort.

Every repair meant time.

When he died, I could have stopped.

Nobody would have blamed me.

Instead, I kept going because the villa was still the place where I imagined growing old.

Derek knew that.

He had grown up hearing us talk about it.

He had stayed there.

He had watched the work being done.

And somehow, he had convinced himself the house was available for his own plans.

I glanced at the porch.

A furniture catalog lay open on the swing.

Arthur and I had built that swing together.

Seeing a catalog there, filled with somebody else's plans for my home, upset me in a way I hadn't expected.

It wasn't the catalog itself.

It was the assumption behind it.

They were choosing furniture for a life I hadn't agreed to surrender.

They were discussing colors.

They were deciding what belonged and what needed to go.

They had treated my presence as temporary.

And every time I thought about that, I felt the same ache.

Not anger alone.

Loss.

The house had almost become a place where my memories were less important than somebody else's decorating choices.

I remembered the old white-oak railing.

I remembered Arthur's hammer slipping and leaving a scratch.

We had never bothered fixing it.

It was a small mark.

Most people would never have noticed.

I noticed it every time I passed.

The scratch reminded me of the years when Arthur was alive and we were still making plans together.

I didn't want anyone sanding it away.

I didn't want strangers deciding it was an imperfection.

It belonged to the story of the house.

A story Derek had been raised inside.

I looked back toward the driveway.

The moving truck was still parked there.

Nobody seemed to know what to do next.

By half past ten, the confusion had become an argument.

Ray and Donna were speaking angrily to Derek.

Megan had gone to their car.

She was crying.

Some of the boxes that had entered the house were being taken back outside.

I watched them appear on the lawn.

Box after box.

Each one reminded me how far the plans had gone.

They hadn't merely discussed moving in.

They had acted as though the decision was final.

I asked Tommy to record the condition of the house before anyone removed more belongings.

I didn't want a fresh disagreement later about what had happened inside.

I wanted a clear record.

The gray curtains were there.

The walls had been touched.

Furniture had been moved.

I wanted those things documented.

It felt strange to be careful about evidence inside my own home.

For years, I had opened the door for family without wondering whether I needed to protect myself.

That morning, everything felt different.

I didn't know whether I would ever feel the old ease again.

Eventually, I walked toward the porch.

Nobody stopped me.

That alone seemed remarkable.

Earlier, I had been treated like the person who didn't belong.

Now I was walking up my own steps.

I put my hand on the white-oak railing.

My fingers found the little scratch near the corner.

I stayed there for a moment.

Arthur had left that mark by accident.

I had kept it because I liked having a small reminder of him.

I wondered what he would have said if he could see me standing there.

He used to tease me about being stubborn.

He said I rarely walked away from anything I had started.

I used to tell him that leaving a job unfinished wasn't something I did easily.

After he died, those conversations came back to me whenever the house needed work.

The roof.

The rooms.

The repairs.

I had kept going.

And now I was touching that scratched railing while my own son tried to explain why he believed he could take possession of it.

I sat on the porch swing.

For a little while, I closed my eyes.

I remembered Arthur laughing.

It was such a familiar memory that I could almost hear him.

I wanted to stay with that memory.

But the day wasn't going to let me.

When I opened my eyes, Derek was standing below the porch.

He looked up at me.

"Mom."

I waited.

"Could I sit with you?"

I gestured toward the empty chair beside the swing.

He came up the steps.

For a few seconds, neither of us spoke.

I could hear the activity in the driveway.

I knew his wife and her parents were still dealing with the moving truck.

But on the porch, it was just Derek and me.

The way it had been so many times before.

I looked at his face.

He was forty-one.

I knew that.

Yet I still saw traces of the child I had raised.

That made everything harder.

If he had been a stranger, I might have been able to remain completely calm.

I could have treated the problem as a property dispute and left it to Robert.

But he wasn't a stranger.

He was the child whose problems I had spent decades trying to solve.

He finally spoke.

"I didn't expect you to challenge me like this."

I turned toward him.

I was so surprised that I needed a moment to answer.

"Challenge you?"

He rubbed his hands together.

"I thought you'd understand. You're my mom."

There it was again.

The expectation.

Because I was his mother, I was supposed to accept whatever he had decided.

Because I had helped him before, I was supposed to keep helping.

Because he needed something, I was supposed to make it available.

I looked across the porch.

Then I asked whether he remembered the summer I changed the back bedroom.

He frowned.

He didn't seem to understand why I was bringing it up.

I reminded him that he had come to the villa with college friends.

He had thought the bedroom was too cramped.

So I removed the old partition and rebuilt the space.

He had wanted somewhere comfortable to stay when he visited.

I had made that happen.

Derek looked toward the house.

He remembered.

Of course he remembered.

But I wondered whether he remembered the work or only the finished room.

I asked if he remembered what happened after Arthur died.

His expression shifted.

"Mom, don't."

I kept talking.

I told him how I had sold Arthur's old truck to pay for a new roof.

I reminded him that I had worked weekends for nearly a year while finishing the house.

Those weren't small sacrifices to me.

They were part of the life I had built after losing my husband.

I had made choices.

I had given up things.

I had kept working when it would have been easier to stop.

And I had done it because the house mattered.

Arthur had imagined us growing old there.

I hadn't been able to give him that future.

But I could keep the place we had made together.

Derek stared down at his hands.

I remembered the deed he had once asked me to sign.

I had trusted him.

That was the simplest and most painful part.

I hadn't looked at him and seen someone who might one day try to remove me from my own home.

I had seen my son.

I had believed that meant I was safe.

"I never wanted to upset you," he said.

I looked directly at him.

"Then explain why you told me I couldn't stay here anymore."

He didn't answer immediately.

He moved his hands against each other.

Then he said he had believed I would settle permanently into the apartment.

Megan's parents needed somewhere to live.

He and Megan thought the arrangement would work.

I listened carefully.

He was describing a decision about my future.

A decision I hadn't made.

He had assumed I would stay somewhere else.

He had assumed Ray and Donna could take the villa.

He had assumed I could afford to make room for them.

And none of those assumptions had involved asking me what I wanted.

I asked him who had made the decision.

He didn't give me a clear answer.

I told him what I had seen.

He and Megan had decided the villa was available.

They had decided my financial situation made it reasonable.

They had begun changing my bedroom.

They had moved belongings.

And only after all that had Derek told me I wasn't welcome.

I watched him struggle to meet my eyes.

I wanted him to understand that the paint was not really the issue.

The curtains were not really the issue.

Even the moving truck was not the deepest wound.

The wound was being treated as though I had no say in my own life.

He had not asked me to help.

He had acted as though my agreement was unnecessary.

At last, his eyes began to fill.

"I was wrong," he said.

I nodded.

"Yes."

He leaned closer.

"Can we make it right?"

I wanted to say yes.

That was my instinct.

I wanted to find a sentence that would make everything feel normal again.

I wanted my son back.

I wanted the easy trust I had felt when he was younger.

But none of those things could be restored by one conversation on a porch.

Not while a moving truck still sat in my driveway.

Not while his loan application was still unexplained.

Not while my walls were covered with somebody else's paint.

I looked at him.

"Not today, Derek."

He leaned back.

For the first time, he seemed to understand that I wasn't going to solve the problem immediately.

I didn't know whether that realization would change him.

I only knew it had changed me.

Then he told me there was more I needed to understand.

His business had been having trouble.

He had borrowed money.

And Megan's parents were facing the loss of their apartment.

He said he had thought everyone could save money by living at the villa.

I sat quietly.

The explanation made some of his decisions easier to understand.

It didn't make them acceptable.

I looked at him and asked the question I had been avoiding.

"How much money do you owe?"

He hesitated.

I asked again.

This time he answered.

Around eighty thousand dollars.

I didn't move.

I looked out toward the driveway and tried to take in what he had told me.

He had been carrying that much debt.

He had hidden it from Megan.

He had told other people he owned my house.

And he had tried to make that house the solution to his problems.

The pieces were beginning to fit together.

I didn't like the picture they formed.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: After Derek Admitted He Owed Eighty Thousand Dollars, I Refused to Rescue Him and Watched His Moving Plans Collapse

I knew something was wrong before Derek answered.
