7 – A Brass Key From Ruth’s Sewing Cabinet Brought Back Her Final Hospital Warning About a Little Blue Book

I kept turning the brass key over in my hand.

It wasn't especially large.

There was nothing decorative about it.

Just a worn piece of metal that looked as though it had opened the same lock for many years.

But Ruth had kept it.

She had placed it inside an envelope.

She had written my name on the front.

And she had instructed Daniel to give it to me only after I found the bonds.

I couldn't dismiss that.

I laid the key beside her letter.

Daniel sat across from me.

He looked as confused as I felt.

I read the second message again.

Ruth said there was something in the locked drawer of her bedroom writing desk.

Something she had kept for four decades.

Something that wasn't money.

I looked at Daniel.

“Do you remember that desk?”

He nodded.

“Of course.”

It had stood in Ruth's bedroom for as long as I could remember.

She kept papers there.

Letters.

Small things she wanted to save.

I had seen her sitting near it during visits.

But I had never opened any of its drawers.

I wouldn't have dreamed of doing that without asking.

Ruth was particular about her belongings.

She knew where things belonged.

And she expected other people to leave them there.

I looked down at the key.

“Did you ever see her use this?”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

I placed it on the table.

I tried to remember when I had last been inside Ruth's bedroom.

It had been during one of her difficult periods.

She had needed help.

I had brought her things from another room.

But I hadn't paid attention to the desk.

Not then.

There had been more important things on my mind.

I felt guilty now, though I knew that made little sense.

I couldn't have known what Ruth was hiding.

She hadn't wanted me to know yet.

That had been the entire point.

Still, I wondered what I might have noticed if I'd looked more carefully.

The brass key.

The desk.

The papers.

All ordinary things.

I had spent forty years overlooking ordinary things.

A jar lid.

A familiar gift.

The way Ruth watched people after they spoke.

I began to feel as though I had understood very little about her.

Daniel picked up the envelope.

“Mom was serious about this.”

I looked at him.

“She was serious about everything.”

He smiled faintly.

“That's true.”

I reread the instruction about Margaret Ellis.

Ruth wanted the attorney with me when the drawer was opened.

That seemed important.

She could have asked Daniel.

She could have asked me to go alone.

Instead, she named Margaret.

A woman who knew the legal arrangements.

A woman who had already told me Ruth expected trouble over her estate.

I folded the letter carefully.

Then I remembered the hospital.

The memory came so suddenly that I stopped moving.

I could see Ruth lying in bed.

Her hand was thin.

Her skin looked almost transparent.

She was tired, but she still recognized me.

I had leaned close because her voice had become weak.

She said something I didn't understand at the time.

I thought she was confused.

Or perhaps simply too exhausted to speak clearly.

But now I remembered the words.

She had asked me to keep her daughters from throwing away a small blue book.

I looked at Daniel.

“There's something your mother said to me in the hospital.”

He straightened.

“What?”

“She mentioned a little blue book.”

He frowned.

“A book?”

“Yes.”

I closed my eyes, trying to hear her voice again.

“She was holding my hand.”

I looked at the letter.

“She told me not to let it be thrown away.”

Daniel stared at me.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“I thought she was talking about something unimportant.”

I swallowed.

“She was so weak. I didn't understand why she was worried about a notebook.”

I remembered touching her hand.

I remembered promising to help.

Then the nurses had come in, and the moment had passed.

I hadn't thought about it again.

Until now.

I looked at the brass key.

Ruth had written that the drawer contained something she had kept for forty years.

A little blue book.

Forty years.

The same length of time as the jars.

I couldn't prove the two things were connected.

But the possibility made my skin prickle.

“Daniel, who cleaned out your mother's bedroom?”

He looked at me.

“Carol and Jeanette.”

I had known that.

But I needed to hear him say it.

“They handled her things?”

“Yes.”

“All of them?”

“As far as I know.”

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What about her writing desk?”

He hesitated.

“I think they emptied it.”

I leaned forward.

“Think?”

“They were sorting through everything after the funeral.”

“Did they remove the drawers?”

“I don't know.”

I looked at the key again.

Ruth had specifically warned me not to let her daughters take the drawer.

But her bedroom had already been cleared.

Weeks had passed.

And I hadn't known I was supposed to protect anything.

I pressed my palms against the table.

“Daniel, they might have found the book.”

He looked uncomfortable.

“Maybe.”

I thought about Carol.

How quickly she had wanted to settle Ruth's remaining affairs.

How often she had mentioned paperwork.

How determined she had seemed to handle everything herself.

Jeanette had behaved much the same way.

At the time, I had assumed they were simply being practical.

Their mother had died.

There were belongings to sort.

Documents to locate.

Decisions to make.

I hadn't wanted to interfere.

I had been grieving.

And I knew from experience that disagreements with Carol could become exhausting.

So I stepped aside.

Now I wondered whether stepping aside had allowed them to remove something Ruth wanted me to have.

I felt a wave of regret.

Not because I thought I should have suspected them of wrongdoing.

But because Ruth had tried to warn me.

I hadn't understood.

I looked at Daniel.

“Did your sisters tell you what they found?”

“Not in detail.”

“Did they mention notebooks?”

He thought for a moment.

“No.”

“Old financial records?”

“Not that I remember.”

I sat back.

There was no reason to continue questioning him about things he hadn't seen.

He looked genuinely uncertain.

I believed him.

But uncertainty wasn't reassuring.

Not when Ruth had been so careful with every other part of her plan.

I studied the key.

The writing desk had been in Ruth's bedroom.

The drawer had been locked.

And Ruth had wanted Margaret present.

Perhaps she had left instructions with the attorney that explained everything.

I glanced at the clock.

Our appointment was that afternoon.

I could ask Margaret.

I could take the letter and key.

And perhaps she could help me understand what was supposed to be inside the drawer.

I looked at Daniel.

“Will you come with me?”

He nodded immediately.

“Of course.”

I was relieved.

I didn't want to face the attorney alone.

Not because I doubted Ruth's intentions.

But because every new discovery seemed to reveal another part of the family history I hadn't known.

I wanted Daniel beside me.

Even after learning that he had kept the trust secret.

Perhaps especially then.

We had spent forty years together.

I wasn't going to pretend that one difficult conversation erased our marriage.

But I needed him to understand that silence had consequences.

He seemed to know that.

He reached across the table.

This time, I took his hand.

“I don't want to fight with your sisters,” I said.

“I know.”

“But I won't give away something your mother asked me to protect.”

He nodded.

“Then we won't.”

I studied him.

I wanted to believe that he would stand by those words when Carol became angry.

He had made promises before.

Some he kept.

Others became harder when his sisters were involved.

But I could only judge him by what he did next.

I placed Ruth's second letter with the first.

Then I wrapped the brass key in a small piece of paper so I wouldn't lose it.

I kept thinking about the blue book.

What could Ruth have written inside it?

Financial records?

Family memories?

Something about the farmhouse?

I didn't know.

And I wasn't willing to invent an answer just because I was frightened.

I needed to see the documents.

I needed to hear what Margaret knew.

And I needed to find out whether Carol and Jeanette had removed something Ruth intended for me.

I was still thinking about that when my telephone rang.

The sound startled me.

I glanced at the screen.

Carol.

I looked at Daniel.

He looked back.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then I answered.

“Hello?”

Carol's voice was unusually cheerful.

“Linda, there you are. I've been trying to get hold of you.”

I glanced at the letters.

“Is everything all right?”

“Oh, yes. Nothing to worry about.”

She spoke quickly.

Too quickly.

I had heard that tone before.

It usually meant she wanted something.

“Jeanette and I have been going through some of Mom's remaining paperwork,” she said.

I looked at the brass key.

“What paperwork?”

“Just the usual estate things.”

She gave a small laugh.

“You know how much paper Mom kept.”

I did know.

Ruth saved everything she considered important.

But Carol's casual tone made me uneasy.

“What do you need from me?”

“We may have a few documents for you to sign.”

I sat straighter.

“Why would I need to sign anything?”

Carol sighed.

“Linda, don't make it more complicated than it is.”

I looked toward Daniel.

He was listening carefully.

“I'm only asking what the papers concern.”

“Mom's property.”

My fingers tightened around the telephone.

“What about it?”

“Some things still need to be settled.”

I thought about Margaret.

Ruth's attorney had said the estate arrangements were being handled through her office.

I didn't understand why Carol was suddenly asking me to sign documents.

I kept my voice calm.

“I'd like to see everything before agreeing to anything.”

There was a pause.

Then Carol spoke more sharply.

“Of course. Nobody is asking you to sign blindly.”

I didn't reply.

She seemed to reconsider her tone.

“Why don't you come over tomorrow?”

“Tomorrow?”

“Yes. Jeanette will be here.”

I looked down at Ruth's letter.

I wasn't going to meet with them before speaking to Margaret.

“I have some things I need to take care of first.”

Carol sounded impatient.

“What things?”

“Personal matters.”

Another silence.

Then she asked a question that changed the conversation.

“Linda, did you notice anything odd about that last jar Mom gave you?”

I felt my throat tighten.

I looked toward the two cardboard boxes.

The fortieth jar was inside one of them.

I had been so careful with it.

And now Carol was asking about it.

“Odd in what way?”

“Oh, I don't know. Mom had started putting things in unusual places.”

I didn't answer.

Carol continued.

“She could be forgetful toward the end.”

I thought of the savings bonds.

The letter.

The trust.

The attorney's recording.

Everything Ruth had arranged so carefully.

I knew Carol's description was unfair.

But I didn't want to reveal what I had found.

“Why are you asking about the jam?”

Carol laughed.

“Just wondering.”

I looked at Daniel.

His face had become serious.

Then Carol added that Jeanette wanted to see the final jar.

I felt a chill.

“Why does Jeanette want it?”

Carol sighed.

“It's just one of Mom's jars, Linda.”

I remained quiet.

She continued.

“We're all family. There's no reason to be difficult.”

I had heard that phrase in one form or another for forty years.

Usually when Carol wanted me to stop asking questions.

I looked at Ruth's warning.

Don't sign anything without guidance.

Don't let them take the drawer.

Protect the documents.

I took a breath.

“I'll talk to you after I've taken care of my appointment.”

Carol didn't like that.

I could hear it.

But she didn't ask what appointment I meant.

Instead, she ended the call.

I lowered the telephone slowly.

Daniel watched me.

“What did she want?”

I looked toward the boxes.

“She asked whether I'd found anything strange in the last jar.”

Daniel's expression changed.

I placed the telephone on the table.

Then I looked at Ruth's letters.

Carol hadn't asked whether I had found money.

She hadn't mentioned the bonds.

She had asked about something unusual.

And I couldn't stop wondering whether she already knew that her mother had hidden more than preserves.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: At the Attorney’s Office, I Learned the Value of Ruth’s Trust and Heard Her Voice Explain a Decision From Forty Years Earlier

I kept turning the brass key over in my hand.
