years.

After her death, Daniel had brought it into our house.

I had barely paid attention to it.

There were too many painful reminders of her already.

Daniel stood.

“I'll get it.”

I watched him leave.

For a moment, I was tempted to call after him.

I wanted him to explain everything before bringing me looked at the bonds.

The first secret had taken forty years to reach me.

The second had been sitting inside a sewing cabinet for weeks.

I heard Daniel opening something down the hallway.

Then his footsteps returned.

He carried a yellow envelope.

It looked ordinary.

Slightly worn.

My name was written across the front in Ruth's unmistakable handwriting.

Below it was a short instruction.

The envelope was meant for me alone.

Daniel placed it carefully on the table.

“I haven't opened it.”

I studied his face.

“I believe you.”

He pulled out his chair.

I touched the envelope.

The paper felt dry beneath my fingers.

I thought about Ruth sitting somewhere with a pen, writing my name.

I wondered whether she had been frightened.

Whether she had known how little time remained.

Whether she had hoped I would understand.

Then I opened it.

Inside was a single folded page.

And a small brass key.

The key slipped into my palm.

It was heavier than I expected.

I held it while I unfolded the letter.

Ruth had left me instructions about a locked drawer in her bedroom writing desk.

She wanted me to go there with Margaret Ellis.

And she was very clear that Carol and Jeanette were not to remove the drawer or its contents.

I looked at Daniel.

“Why would she be worried about a drawer?”

He shook his head.

“I don't know.”

I looked down at the key.

Then I read Ruth's instructions again.

She said the drawer contained something she had kept for forty years.

Not jewelry.

Not another financial gift.

Something that would help me understand why she had chosen to care for me long before I realized what I meant to her.

I pressed my fingers around the brass key.

Ruth hadn't finished explaining herself.

And for the first time that morning, I understood why Daniel had been told to keep the envelope until I discovered the forty jars.

Click
