Haddon Legal Associates.”

I cleared my throat.

“Hello. My name is Linda Haddon. I'm calling about Ruth Haddon.”

The woman became quiet for a moment.

Then her voice softened.

“Mrs. Haddon, we've been waiting to hear from you.”

I gripped the telephone.

“You knew I would call?”

“Yes. Ruth left instructions about when you might contact us.”

I looked at the letter.

“She told you about the Christmas present?”

“She did. She explained it very carefully.”

I couldn't help smiling.

That sounded exactly like Ruth.

She had always wanted things done properly.

Even the simplest task had to be completed in the correct order.

The woman introduced herself as Margaret Ellis.

She told me she had handled Ruth's estate planning for nearly twenty years.

Her voice was calm.

Professional.

But not cold.

She spoke about Ruth in a way that made me believe she had known her as a person, not simply as a client.

“Have you found the papers she left inside the jars?” Margaret asked.

“Yes.”

“All of them?”

“I found forty bonds.”

“Good.”

That single word surprised me.

Margaret sounded relieved.

I looked toward the basement door.

“Did Ruth actually tell you how she hid them?”

“She certainly did.”

I let out a breath.

“She must have been planning this for years.”

“She was very deliberate about it, Linda.”

Hearing a stranger use my first name felt oddly comforting.

It was how Ruth had addressed me.

Never too sweetly.

Never with exaggerated affection.

Just Linda.

Margaret asked whether I still had the original jars.

I said I did.

Then she gave me a list of things to bring to her office.

The forty jars.

The original bonds.

Ruth's letter.

Every page.

I glanced at the empty glass containers downstairs.

“All forty jars?”

“Yes, please.”

I hesitated.

“I know this probably sounds foolish, but I've kept them for years.”

“It doesn't sound foolish to me.”

I looked down at the letter.

“Can you tell me what the trust is worth?”

Margaret paused.

“I'd prefer to go through the accounting with you in person.”

My stomach tightened.

“Is something wrong?”

“No. But there are details you should understand before discussing it with anyone else.”

I sat down.

That was not quite the answer I had expected.

Margaret continued speaking.

She said there was an additional document in Ruth's estate file.

Something Ruth had specifically instructed her to share with me.

I pressed the telephone closer.

“What kind of document?”

“A statement Ruth recorded before she passed away.”

I stopped moving.

“A recording?”

“Yes.”

I looked at Ruth's handwriting.

I had spent the previous evening wishing I could hear her voice.

Now Margaret was telling me that I could.

The thought was almost too much.

I asked when Ruth had made it.

“About six months before her death.”

Six months.

I pictured Ruth during that time.

Older.

Tired more often.

But still very clear about what she wanted.

I remembered how particular she had become about her paperwork.

How carefully she kept things.

How she corrected people when they assumed she wasn't following a conversation.

I had never believed she was confused.

Not once.

“Why did she make a recording?” I asked.

Margaret didn't answer immediately.

I heard a faint movement at the other end of the line.

Then she spoke.

“Because she expected there might be disagreements about her intentions.”

I leaned forward.

“What sort of disagreements?”

“Her daughters had already contacted our office.”

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“Carol and Jeanette?”

“Yes.”

I looked toward the hallway.

Daniel was still elsewhere in the house.

I lowered my voice.

“What did they want?”

“They asked questions about Ruth's estate and raised concerns about her ability to make decisions.”

I couldn't speak.

Margaret continued carefully.

She explained that the office had refused to disclose private information without authorization.

Ruth's financial affairs were confidential.

Her daughters couldn't simply demand access because they were family.

I knew Carol wouldn't have liked hearing that.

Jeanette either.

They were accustomed to asking direct questions and expecting answers.

Especially when money was involved.

But it was the question about Ruth's mental capacity that disturbed me.

I remembered her final months.

She had been physically weaker.

Her handwriting had changed.

But her mind had remained sharp.

She knew people's birthdays.

She remembered appointments.

She noticed when somebody moved something in her kitchen.

And she certainly understood the difference between giving a gift and signing away property.

I had seen that determination many times.

I swallowed.

“Did Ruth know they contacted you?”

“Yes.”

“What did she say?”

Margaret spoke slowly.

“She wanted everything documented so nobody could reasonably doubt that she understood her choices.”

I covered my eyes with my free hand.

Ruth had been preparing for an argument I didn't even know existed.

And she had done it while approaching the end of her life.

I felt angry.

Not loudly angry.

The kind of anger that makes your stomach hurt because you don't know what to do with it.

I had cared for Ruth through difficult periods.

I knew how much she disliked being treated as helpless.

The thought of Carol and Jeanette questioning her judgment because she wouldn't do what they wanted made me deeply uncomfortable.

Margaret seemed to understand my silence.

“Linda, I don't want you to feel frightened. We have extensive records of Ruth's decisions.”

I looked at the bonds.

“She really wanted me to have all this?”

“Yes.”

I asked whether Carol and Jeanette knew about the trust.

Margaret didn't disclose their private conversations beyond what she could properly share.

But she made one thing clear.

Ruth had taken precautions because she believed objections were possible.

I found myself holding the telephone with both hands.

It was becoming harder to think of the bonds as a simple surprise.

They were part of something much larger.

Something Ruth had spent years arranging.

And something her daughters might be determined to challenge.

Margaret asked whether I could come that afternoon.

I said yes.

She gave me a time.

I wrote it on the same piece of paper where I had copied her number.

My handwriting looked worse than Ruth's.

When the conversation ended, I remained seated.

The telephone rested beside my tea.

The water had cooled.

I hadn't taken a single sip.

I looked around the kitchen.

The ordinary things were still there.

The clock.

The chairs.

The cupboard Daniel and I had been meaning to repair.

Nothing about our house had changed.

Yet I felt as though the floor beneath me had shifted.

I had inherited something from Ruth.

Something significant.

But I had also inherited questions.

And I was beginning to understand that answering them might mean facing people I had spent decades trying not to upset.

I stood and went downstairs.

The forty jars were arranged on their shelf.

I touched the first one.

Then the last.

They looked so ordinary.

Glass.

Metal.

Small numbers.

For years, they had represented my embarrassment at Christmas.

Now they seemed almost impossible to understand.

Ruth had known I would keep them.

She had trusted my habits.

She had trusted my appreciation.

And she had apparently trusted me with a secret that she wouldn't share openly with her own daughters.

I began collecting the jars.

Margaret wanted all forty.

I found two sturdy cardboard boxes.

I lined them carefully and placed the jars inside.

I made sure they couldn't knock against one another.

I didn't want to damage anything.

Not after discovering what they had protected for so long.

When I finished, I carried the boxes toward the basement stairs.

They were heavier than I expected.

I stopped halfway and caught my breath.

Forty jars.

Forty years.

I thought about how many times I had brought one home and placed it on that shelf.

How many times I had carried Ruth's gift with both hands.

How often I had wondered whether she realized I felt embarrassed.

Now I knew she had noticed.

She had noticed everything.

I got the boxes upstairs and placed them beside the kitchen table.

Then I spread the letter out again.

I read the section about Daniel.

Ruth had told him something about the trust.

She had asked him to keep quiet.

I wanted to know how long he had known.

I wanted to know whether he understood why she had hidden the bonds.

Most of all, I wanted to know why he had let me keep believing the jam was all she intended to give me.

I heard a car outside.

Then footsteps.

The front door opened.

Daniel had returned from his morning appointment.

I heard him put down his things.

He walked toward the kitchen.

“Linda?”

I looked up.

He stopped in the doorway.

His eyes moved from the boxes to the documents covering the table.

Then he saw Ruth's handwriting.

His expression changed.

I had known Daniel for forty years.

I recognized that look.

He wasn't confused.

He was afraid of what I had discovered.

I placed my hand on the letter.

“Your mother left me something.”

Daniel didn't move.

He looked at the papers.

Then he slowly closed his eyes.

And I understood that the next conversation would be one we should have had long before Ruth died.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: My Husband Admitted He Had Known About Ruth’s
