11 – I Faced Difficult Questions at My First Major Board Review and Discovered That My New Position Required More Than Gratitude

The first major board meeting after the Sea Star voyage frightened me more than I expected.

I had attended meetings before.

I had studied reports.

I had learned how departments worked together.

But this meeting was different.

I would be presenting the changes I wanted to make across guest services.

Not simply listening.

Not taking notes.

I would have to explain my decisions to people responsible for the company's future.

I had been preparing for days.

My desk was covered with reports.

I studied passenger complaints.

Employee turnover.

Refunds.

Repeated service problems.

I tried to understand what the numbers were telling me.

Sometimes I caught myself staring at a page for far too long.

I was afraid somebody would ask a question I couldn't answer.

I was afraid they would discover that I had spent most of my working life carrying plates instead of managing a large company.

I knew that fear wasn't entirely fair to myself.

I had been training.

I had worked hard.

I had learned enough to understand many of the problems.

But knowing those things didn't always make me feel confident.

One evening, James found me reviewing the same figures again.

He looked at the papers.

"Still working?"

I nodded.

"I want to make sure I understand everything."

He sat opposite me.

"You won't know everything."

I looked up.

"That's reassuring."

He smiled.

"I mean it."

I put down my pencil.

He explained that board members expected clear reasoning.

They didn't expect every executive to possess every answer.

If something needed more examination, I could say so.

If a number was uncertain, I could explain that.

If a proposal needed refinement, I could accept it.

I listened.

Part of me understood.

Another part remembered the diner.

When I made a mistake there, somebody sometimes shouted.

If an order was wrong, the customer could become angry.

If I forgot something during a busy shift, I was expected to apologize immediately.

I had learned that mistakes could become personal.

Now I was trying to understand a workplace where disagreement might simply mean people were doing their jobs.

James noticed my expression.

"What's worrying you?"

I looked at the papers.

"I don't want people thinking I only have this position because of you."

He didn't answer immediately.

Then he said something I appreciated.

He acknowledged that he had opened the door for me.

That was true.

We both knew it.

But he also reminded me that I had been doing the work.

I had studied.

Asked questions.

Listened to employees.

Developed proposals.

I couldn't erase the way the opportunity began.

But I could make sure the work itself was taken seriously.

I nodded.

Then I returned to my reports.

The morning of the meeting, I dressed carefully.

Navy blazer.

Clean blouse.

Comfortable shoes.

I had learned long ago that shoes mattered when a person might spend hours standing.

Even now, I couldn't bring myself to choose something uncomfortable simply because it looked impressive.

I checked my notes.

Then I went to the meeting room.

The directors were already arriving.

There were papers on the table.

Water glasses.

Folders.

A screen for the presentation.

I sat down and opened my notebook.

Nobody knew how much effort it took to keep my hands steady.

The meeting began.

Other matters were discussed first.

I listened.

I wrote down questions.

Then it was my turn.

I stood beside the screen.

The first slide appeared.

I introduced the proposal.

My voice trembled slightly.

I heard it.

I wondered whether everybody else did too.

I continued.

I explained the difficulties we had identified.

Repeated passenger complaints.

Problems that moved between departments without being resolved.

Employees leaving before their contracts ended.

Managers issuing refunds because they hadn't received enough support to handle difficult situations earlier.

I described the training changes we wanted.

Clearer reporting.

Better escalation steps.

More consistent supervision.

I used examples from the work without turning my family into the center of the presentation.

Carmen's experience had helped me recognize the need for improvement.

But the proposal wasn't about one passenger.

It was about a system that needed to work for everyone.

A director asked why costs had increased.

I looked at my notes.

Then I answered.

Training required paid time.

Managers needed clear procedures.

Recordkeeping required effort.

I explained why I believed those expenses could prevent larger problems later.

Another director asked whether the changes would produce measurable results.

I nodded.

That was the question I had expected.

I explained the figures we planned to track.

Repeated incidents.

Employee retention.

Complaint escalation.

Refund patterns.

I wanted us to know whether the changes were helping.

Not simply assume they were.

The discussion continued.

Some questions were difficult.

One director challenged an estimate.

Another wanted a clearer explanation of how responsibilities would be divided.

I listened.

I answered what I could.

When I needed to check something, I said so.

Nobody shouted.

Nobody treated a question as proof that I was worthless.

That surprised me more than it should have.

By the fourth slide, I stopped thinking about my trembling voice.

I was concentrating on the work.

The figures made sense.

The questions had answers.

And when a director disagreed, I could explain why I thought my proposal mattered.

I wasn't simply asking them to trust me.

I was showing them what I had learned.

The meeting eventually moved on.

I sat down.

My hands were cold.

I drank some water.

I had no idea whether I had done well.

There had been no applause.

No dramatic congratulations.

Just questions.

Discussion.

Decisions.

I tried to remind myself that this was normal.

When the meeting ended, people began gathering their papers.

I remained seated for a moment.

The finance director approached.

He had been one of the people asking difficult questions.

I felt my stomach tighten.

He said the estimates connected to employee retention needed more work.

I nodded.

"I understand."

He suggested we review them together later that week.

I looked at him.

"Thank you."

He gathered his papers.

Then he said the presentation had been good.

That was all.

Two ordinary words of approval.

No grand speech.

No dramatic praise.

But I carried them back to my office as though they were something precious.

I sat down.

I closed the door.

Then I smiled.

Not because I had impressed everyone.

Not because I had become an expert overnight.

Because I had stood in a room full of experienced people and explained work that mattered.

They had challenged my numbers.

They had asked for revisions.

They had treated me like someone whose ideas deserved examination.

I hadn't needed to become small.

I hadn't needed to apologize for speaking.

And I hadn't needed James to answer on my behalf.

That was new.

I thought about the years I had spent trying to earn David's approval.

Whenever he received a promotion, I celebrated.

Whenever he bought something expensive, I listened proudly.

Whenever he spoke about his career, I tried to understand.

But when I mentioned my work, he often treated it as something ordinary.

I had accepted that difference.

I told myself his job was more important.

His salary proved it.

His responsibilities were larger.

Now I understood how narrow that thinking had been.

The diner had taught me things I used every day.

It taught me to notice when somebody was uncomfortable.

To remember details.

To remain calm when several people needed help at once.

To understand how small mistakes could affect an entire shift.

Those lessons hadn't disappeared because the setting changed.

They had become part of the way I worked.

I felt proud of them.

Later that afternoon, James came by.

He asked how the meeting had gone.

I told him about the questions.

The estimates.

The finance director's offer to help.

Then I told him about the compliment.

James smiled.

I knew he was pleased.

But I didn't want his approval to become the only approval that mattered.

I wanted to learn to recognize my own progress.

That evening, I asked him to have dinner with me somewhere away from the ship.

No uniforms.

No company dining room.

No staff members stopping to ask questions.

Just two people eating together.

We chose a small restaurant.

The tables were slightly uneven.

The bread arrived warm.

I liked it immediately.

It reminded me of the kind of place where people came to eat rather than be impressed.

James sat opposite me.

For a while, we talked about ordinary things.

The weather.

Work.

A small problem he had dealt with that morning.

Then I put down my fork.

There was something I had been thinking about for weeks.

"James, I want to talk about the partnership."

He nodded.

"All right."

I looked at the breadbasket.

I wasn't sure how to begin.

Then I decided to say the thing that had been troubling me.

"Fifty thousand dollars isn't enough to buy a quarter of twelve cruise ships."

James looked at me.

"No, it isn't."

I felt relieved that he didn't try to pretend otherwise.

My attorney had already explained the structure.

I understood that my ownership interest included a substantial transfer from James.

My cash investment was only part of the arrangement.

There were obligations under the agreement.

And the controlling interest remained with James and the founding trust.

I knew the legal explanation.

But understanding the documents didn't make the emotional part simple.

I looked at him.

"You gave me something enormous."

He waited.

"I need to know why."

His expression became serious.

I continued before I lost my courage.

"I can't spend the rest of my life wondering whether I only have this job because you once loved me."

James looked down at his hands.

For a moment, I worried I had offended him.

Then he looked toward the window.

Outside, a boy was struggling with a kite near a bicycle.

We watched for a second.

Then James turned back to me.

He explained that there had been several reasons behind his decisions.

He knew me.

He wanted to offer me an opportunity.

He wanted me to have financial security.

Those were personal choices.

He didn't deny them.

I appreciated that honesty.

Then he spoke about the company.

The job had to serve the business.

My responsibilities had to be real.

My performance had to be evaluated fairly.

If I needed help, I should receive it.

If the role needed to change, we should address that honestly.

I listened carefully.

It wasn't the easy reassurance I had expected.

He didn't promise I could never fail.

He didn't say I would always be vice president no matter what happened.

He treated the work seriously.

And that made me feel safer.

I didn't want a title that depended entirely on his affection.

I wanted responsibilities I could understand and perform.

I looked at him.

"What if I disagree with you?"

He smiled faintly.

"You already do."

I thought about the meeting we had earlier that morning.

I had challenged one of his suggestions.

Then another.

And another.

I laughed.

"More often than you realize."

He laughed too.

For a moment, I saw the young man I had known forty years earlier.

The one who waited outside the diner.

The one who made me laugh when I was tired.

The years had changed us.

He had lived an entire life.

So had I.

We weren't the same people.

But there was something familiar in the way we spoke.

I grew serious again.

"I don't want to owe you the rest of my life."

James shook his head.

"You don't."

"I mean it."

"So do I."

I looked down at my hands.

I had spent years feeling indebted to David because he allowed me to live in his house.

Even though I paid rent.

Even though I bought groceries.

Even though I helped whenever I could.

I didn't want to recreate that feeling with James.

Not with a larger home.

Not with a more impressive title.

Not with shares in a company.

I wanted to be grateful without becoming dependent on somebody's approval.

"I need room to figure out who I am now."

James nodded.

"I understand."

I looked at him.

"Even if I'm different from the girl you remember?"

His expression softened.

"I hope you are."

I smiled.

He reached across the table.

Then stopped before touching my hand.

"May I?"

I looked at his hand.

It was such a small question.

But it carried something I hadn't felt in a long time.

Choice.

I turned my hand toward his.

He took it gently.

We sat that way for a while.

The restaurant continued around us.

Plates moved.

People talked.

The bread cooled.

Nobody was demanding anything.

Nobody was threatening to leave.

And for once, I didn't feel that accepting kindness meant surrendering control of my life.

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: I Chose a Small
