16 – When Christmas Brought My Brother to Alexandria, I Saw Whether His Apology Had Survived Beyond the Graduation Hall and the Hidden Letter

Christmas arrived without the usual family arrangement.

That was the first thing I noticed.

In previous years, the holiday often meant complicated conversations.

Who would visit whom.

Who was disappointed.

Who had worked too much.

Who had failed to call at the right time.

And whether I would be reminded that Kyle needed more support than I did.

I had come to expect those conversations.

Sometimes I dreaded them before December even began.

That year was different.

Kyle came to visit me in Alexandria.

I remember preparing for his arrival.

Not with the anxious feeling I usually associated with family gatherings.

With something closer to ordinary anticipation.

I wanted to see my brother.

I wanted us to spend time together without another person deciding what either of us meant.

I wanted a day that didn't revolve around the graduation.

Or the letter.

Or the arguments.

I knew those things were part of our history.

They couldn't disappear.

But I wanted to discover whether we could still enjoy each other's company.

That seemed like a reasonable hope.

I thought about the swimming-pool photograph while getting ready.

It had become part of my home again.

Not hidden.

Not sealed inside an envelope.

Visible.

I sometimes caught myself stopping in front of it.

The little boy in the towel.

The younger woman smiling beside him.

The moment before life became complicated.

I wondered whether Kyle would notice it.

I suspected he would.

He had sent it back to me himself.

And he had taken the trouble to have it repaired.

That mattered.

I also thought about Mom.

Her letter was still unanswered.

I had kept it.

I had reread parts of it.

But I wasn't ready to respond.

Not because I wanted to make her suffer.

Because I wanted any answer I gave to be honest.

I didn't want to write that I forgave her simply because the holiday made silence uncomfortable.

I didn't want to promise that everything would return to normal.

I didn't want to make a gesture I couldn't sustain.

So I let the letter remain where it was.

And I focused on Kyle's visit.

When he arrived, he looked tired from traveling but pleased to see me.

I opened the door.

For a moment, we simply looked at each other.

Then he smiled.

"Merry Christmas."

I smiled back.

"Merry Christmas, Kyle."

He stepped inside.

There was no awkward demand for an apology.

No speech about what happened in Coronado.

No attempt to make the visit more important than it needed to be.

He was my brother.

He had come to spend Christmas with me.

I was glad.

We hugged.

It was easier than the embrace in the reception room.

There, we had been surrounded by painful truths.

He had just learned our mother had lied.

I had just discovered the letter.

We were both shaken.

This embrace was different.

It belonged to an ordinary visit.

No audience.

No ceremony.

No one watching to see whether we forgave each other.

I appreciated that.

Kyle stepped back.

He looked around.

"Smells good."

I laughed.

"We haven't finished dinner yet."

He grinned.

"Then I arrived at the right time."

I shook my head.

"You're helping."

He looked almost offended.

"Of course I am."

I smiled.

There was something comforting about that exchange.

A small disagreement about dinner.

Nothing serious.

Nothing that needed to become a family argument.

We moved into the kitchen.

Kyle was immediately confident.

Too confident.

He had opinions about how things should be done.

I had my own.

We began arguing about ordinary details.

Not angrily.

Just the way siblings do when they know each other well enough to be annoying.

I told him he was doing something wrong.

He insisted he had it under control.

I raised an eyebrow.

He laughed.

I realized how much I had missed that sound.

Not the forced laughter from registration.

Not the mocking little chuckle after Mom damaged my identification card.

Real laughter.

The kind that didn't require someone else to feel small.

We worked together.

Sometimes efficiently.

Sometimes not.

I found myself watching him when he wasn't looking.

The same brother I had seen in dress whites was now standing in my kitchen.

No audience.

No Trident ceremony.

No need to prove anything.

Just Kyle.

He was thirty-one.

Tall.

Older than the boy in my photograph.

But certain expressions hadn't changed.

When he concentrated on something, he made the same face he had made as a child.

When he was pleased with himself, his smile appeared before he spoke.

And when he knew I was about to correct him, he looked at me with exaggerated patience.

I laughed more than I expected.

We argued about music too.

He preferred one thing.

I preferred another.

Neither of us wanted to surrender control.

For a moment, I remembered how our mother used to turn disagreements into questions of loyalty.

If Kyle wanted something, I was supposed to understand.

If I objected, I was making trouble.

That Christmas, a disagreement could simply be a disagreement.

Nobody became the favored child.

Nobody became the problem.

We argued.

Then we laughed.

Then we moved on.

It felt almost strange.

I hadn't realized how much energy I once spent trying to prevent ordinary conversations from becoming painful.

Kyle didn't seem interested in repeating the old pattern.

When I disagreed with him, he didn't accuse me of thinking I was better.

When he made a joke, it wasn't about my career.

And when I corrected him, he didn't turn to someone else for support.

He simply argued back.

Like a brother.

I loved it.

The most entertaining part of the evening involved cookies.

Kyle insisted he could bake them.

I looked at him.

"Are you sure?"

He gave me a confident smile.

"How difficult can it be?"

I should have known better than to challenge him.

He had completed SEAL Qualification Training.

He had endured demanding physical and mental tests.

He had survived a frightening training accident.

And apparently, he believed those experiences made him fully qualified to produce perfect Christmas cookies.

I let him try.

That was my first mistake.

Or perhaps it was the best decision I made all evening.

He approached the task with complete confidence.

I watched him work.

He seemed certain that every step was obvious.

I asked whether he needed help.

He waved me away.

"I've got it."

I smiled.

"All right."

I stood back.

It didn't take long before I began to question his confidence.

He looked at the mixture.

Then at me.

Then back at the mixture.

I tried not to laugh.

He frowned.

"Don't start."

"I haven't said anything."

"You've got that look."

"What look?"

"The one where you know I'm about to be wrong."

I laughed.

He shook his head.

"Very supportive."

I folded my arms.

"I offered to help."

He pointed toward the kitchen.

"I remember."

I watched him continue.

He was determined.

I had seen that determination before.

At the pool.

At his graduation.

In the way he had apologized when he knew he was wrong.

Now it was being applied to cookies.

The stakes were considerably lower.

I was grateful for that.

When the cookies were finally ready, they were terrible.

There was no polite way to describe them.

They were simply bad.

Kyle examined one.

I examined another.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then I took a bite.

I looked at him.

He looked at me.

We both started laughing.

I had to put the cookie down.

He leaned against the counter.

I laughed harder.

Then he did too.

It became impossible to stop.

Every time one of us tried to speak, the other started again.

I wiped my eyes.

Kyle held up one of the cookies.

"Maybe they're supposed to be like this."

I shook my head.

"No, Kyle."

He grinned.

"Maybe it's a different style."

I laughed again.

"It's certainly different."

He looked at the cookie.

Then he laughed so hard that he had to put it down.

I hadn't laughed like that with him in years.

Not since he was much younger.

Not since our conversations had become cautious and distant.

I felt something warm and painful at the same time.

Joy.

And grief for the years when we might have shared more moments like this.

I didn't say that aloud.

Not then.

I wanted to enjoy what was happening.

We made dinner together.

We talked about ordinary things.

We argued about music again.

And every so often, one of us glanced toward the terrible cookies and started laughing.

The evening became easier as it went on.

I stopped waiting for a hurtful remark.

I stopped preparing explanations about my career.

I stopped wondering whether he would repeat something Mom had told him.

He was simply there.

And he was making an effort to know me.

I could see it in the questions he asked.

Not dramatic questions.

Not questions designed to prove he had changed.

Ordinary ones.

What had I been working on?

Was I enjoying my responsibilities?

Had I always wanted to remain in the Navy this long?

I answered what I could.

Some aspects of my work weren't appropriate for casual discussion.

He understood that.

He didn't push.

He listened.

That was new.

Or perhaps it was something old returning.

I remembered the little boy who once asked me endless questions about ships.

He had wanted to know everything.

Then somewhere along the way, curiosity had become mockery.

Now he was curious again.

I appreciated it more than I could explain.

I asked about his work too.

About how he felt after qualifying.

About the adjustment from training to the responsibilities ahead.

I didn't demand details he couldn't share.

I understood the boundaries.

He answered openly where he could.

Sometimes he smiled.

Sometimes he became thoughtful.

And sometimes we simply sat quietly.

There was no need to fill every silence.

That was another difference.

Silence with Mom often meant someone was offended.

Silence with Kyle that evening felt comfortable.

I realized how much I had wanted that.

A relationship in which I didn't have to monitor every pause.

I looked across the room.

My framed Navy photograph was visible.

Kyle noticed it too.

His eyes lingered.

I didn't interrupt him.

I wondered what he was thinking.

Perhaps he remembered the public salute.

Perhaps he thought about Pacific Shield.

Perhaps he was comparing the woman in the photograph with the sister sitting across from him.

I couldn't know.

But I was no longer afraid to let him ask.

He looked toward me.

"Paige?"

"Yes?"

He paused.

Then he smiled slightly.

"I've been thinking about something."

I waited.

He glanced back at the photograph.

I could tell the question mattered to him.

But he wasn't trying to challenge me.

He was trying to understand.

I felt a quiet relief.

This was what I had hoped for after Coronado.

Not admiration.

Not constant apologies.

A brother who wanted to know his sister.

I looked at him.

"Go ahead."

He settled back.

For a moment, he seemed to choose his words carefully.

Then he looked at my framed Navy photograph again.

And I knew we were about to speak about something we had avoided for far too long.

Not because either of us was angry.

Because he was finally ready to ask.

And I was finally comfortable answering.
