14 – On His First Overnight Shift, My Brother Arrived in a Cheap Shirt With the Price Tag Still Attached to His Tie

The first Friday night Ross reported for his shift, I noticed his clothes.

That probably sounds like a small thing.

After everything that had happened, I should have been thinking about the judgment.

Or the children.

Or whether we could work in the same building without another argument.

But what I remember first is the tie.

It still had the price tag attached.

Ross was wearing a plain white shirt.

The kind you could buy without spending much.

The tie looked new.

He hadn't removed the little tag.

I looked at him and remembered the expensive suit he had worn to court.

That suit had made him look confident.

He had entered the hearing as though the appearance alone might help his case.

Now he was standing in the radio station wearing something ordinary.

Something practical.

And he looked nervous.

I wasn't used to seeing that.

Ross normally entered rooms as though he belonged at the center of them.

He liked to be noticed.

He liked to be greeted.

He liked people knowing what he had accomplished.

At the station, he wasn't the most important person in the room.

He was the newest employee.

He had to learn the routine.

He had to follow instructions.

And he had to earn the trust of people who didn't owe him anything because he was my brother.

I wasn't going to interfere with that.

The manager had hired him.

The station would decide how he performed.

I knew my own responsibilities.

I needed to host the overnight program.

I needed to keep the broadcast moving.

And I needed to treat Ross as a coworker while we were there.

That didn't mean everything between us was settled.

It wasn't.

The court judgment still existed.

The repayment arrangement had begun because he owed money.

The account remained in my name.

His card was blocked.

And my children had not forgotten New Year's Eve.

I wasn't going to pretend otherwise.

But I also wasn't going to make his first shift more difficult than it already was.

He had accepted a job.

That was the step I had told him he needed to take.

I wanted him to have the opportunity to do it properly.

Abby noticed him almost immediately.

She had been working with me on New Year's Eve.

She had seen the missed calls on my phone.

She had reminded me to check the voicemail when my shift ended.

She knew what had happened afterward.

She also knew Ross had brought legal papers to the station.

I wondered what she would say when she saw him.

I hoped she would keep things professional.

She did.

She looked at his white shirt.

Then at the tie.

The price tag was still visible.

Her expression changed slightly.

She asked whether it was his first day.

Ross nodded.

He answered with a few quiet words.

Nothing confident.

Nothing elaborate.

Abby didn't make a joke about the lawsuit.

She didn't mention the family account.

She didn't ask whether he was still claiming eighteen hundred dollars in deposits.

She simply handed him a clipboard.

Then she welcomed him to the night shift.

I felt grateful for that.

Abby had every reason to know our situation was awkward.

But she understood something important.

Ross was there to work.

The station wasn't a family courtroom.

It wasn't a place where we needed to repeat every painful detail.

It was a workplace.

And the job needed to be done.

I watched Ross take the clipboard.

He looked down at it.

For a moment, he reminded me of Calvin when my son was trying to understand something new.

That comparison surprised me.

I didn't want to see Ross as a child.

He was forty-three.

He had made adult decisions.

He was responsible for their consequences.

But I recognized the uncertainty in his expression.

He didn't know the routine yet.

He didn't know how quickly the hours could move.

He didn't know how much attention the work required.

And he couldn't cover that uncertainty with a speech.

He had to learn.

I thought that might be the most useful part of the job for him.

There were tasks he couldn't talk his way around.

If a line was blinking, someone needed to answer it.

If a request came in, someone needed to record it.

If equipment needed attention, someone had to respond.

The work didn't care whether he had once hosted an expensive party.

It didn't care whether he had driven a costly SUV.

It didn't care whether he liked being admired.

It only cared whether he did the job correctly.

I had spent years respecting that kind of work.

Maybe now Ross would begin to understand it.

I went into the studio.

The familiar equipment was waiting.

The microphone.

The console.

The clock.

Everything looked the way it usually did.

I had stood in that room on New Year's Eve.

I had counted down the final seconds of the year.

I had wished listeners happiness.

And I had been completely unaware that Calvin and Molly were outside Ross's house.

I still thought about that night whenever I saw the clock above the console.

I remembered 10:52.

Two missed calls.

Lamar trying to reach me.

I remembered the voicemail I heard after six in the morning.

The older man's voice.

The words explaining that the children were safe.

And the terrible realization that they had been outside for hours.

I had never expected the memory of a successful holiday broadcast to become connected to something so frightening.

Now Ross was working in the same station.

I wondered whether he understood what that meant to me.

I didn't ask.

It wasn't the time.

He was preparing for his first shift.

And I needed to prepare for mine.

At midnight, I opened the microphone.

The routine felt familiar.

I welcomed listeners across Wichita.

I told them we would be keeping them company through the night.

Then I mentioned that we had a new person helping with requests.

Ross was on the other side of the glass.

He looked toward the equipment.

A phone line began blinking.

I watched him reach for it.

There was hesitation.

Just a little.

But I noticed.

He had probably expected the work to be simple.

Answer a phone.

Write something down.

Help with the broadcast.

It sounded easy when described that way.

But the station could become busy quickly.

A call needed to be answered correctly.

A name needed to be recorded.

A request needed to be passed along.

And the person answering had to pay attention.

I had learned that long ago.

You couldn't assume every caller wanted the same thing.

Some wanted to hear a favorite song.

Some wanted to dedicate music to a family member.

Some were celebrating.

Some were grieving.

And some simply wanted someone to acknowledge that they were awake and having a difficult night.

I had heard all kinds of stories in twenty years.

Ross was beginning to hear them for the first time from the other side of the equipment.

He answered the line.

He listened.

Then he began writing.

I watched his pen move across the call log.

His expression was serious.

No smile for an audience.

No speech.

He was concentrating.

That made me feel cautiously hopeful.

It was only one call.

I knew that.

But it was a beginning.

The next part of the shift continued.

Music played.

Callers came through.

Abby kept things organized.

Ross followed the work.

I could see him looking at the clipboard.

I could see him checking what he had written.

He didn't look comfortable yet.

I understood.

Most people didn't feel completely comfortable on their first night in a new job.

Especially a job with unfamiliar equipment.

He was trying.

That was more than I had seen from him during some of our earlier conversations.

When I confronted him about the family fund, he had argued.

When the bank records showed four deposits, he insisted there should have been twelve.

When the magistrate questioned the anniversary receipt, he couldn't answer.

When Allison asked about his job, he tried to avoid the question.

But here, he couldn't avoid the task.

He had to pick up the phone.

He had to listen.

He had to write things down.

I found myself watching through the glass more often than usual.

I didn't want to make him nervous.

I also didn't want to ignore what was happening.

My brother was doing something he hadn't done for months.

He was working.

Real work.

A shift that would lead to wages.

Wages that would help satisfy the judgment.

It wasn't glamorous.

But it mattered.

I thought about the repayment arrangement.

Part of what he earned would go toward the amount the court had ordered.

Three thousand one hundred and forty dollars.

Plus costs.

I knew it would take time.

He wasn't earning the kind of money that would make the debt disappear after one paycheck.

He would have to keep working.

Shift after shift.

That was the reality.

I wondered whether he had calculated how many nights it might take.

I hadn't asked.

The arrangement existed.

He knew what he owed.

I didn't need to stand over him with the number.

Still, the amount remained in my mind.

It wasn't because I wanted to punish him.

It was because I remembered where that money came from.

Mom's contributions.

Dad's pension.

My monthly deposits.

The account had been meant to help all of us.

Ross had used it for expenses he claimed were his own.

Now he needed to repay the difference.

I looked at him again.

He was writing in the log.

His shoulders were slightly hunched.

The white shirt looked ordinary under the station lights.

The tie still had that little tag.

I almost wanted to tell him about it.

Then I decided not to.

It wasn't important.

If someone else noticed, he could handle it.

He had more serious things to learn.

The hours continued.

The first few calls were ordinary.

Requests.

Dedications.

Questions about songs.

Then the conversations became more personal.

That often happened during the overnight shift.

As the city became quieter, people sometimes talked more openly.

They told us things they might not say during the day.

A relationship that had ended badly.

A disappointment that still hurt.

A family argument they couldn't stop thinking about.

I listened from the studio.

Ross listened from the board.

I wondered what he thought of it.

He had spent so much time trying to control how people saw him.

Now he was hearing strangers describe moments when they hadn't been able to control anything.

They weren't trying to sound successful.

They weren't asking to be admired.

They were simply talking about their lives.

Some sounded embarrassed.

Some sounded exhausted.

Some sounded relieved to have someone answer.

I had always understood why the night could make people honest.

There were fewer distractions.

Less noise.

Sometimes it felt easier to speak when the person listening couldn't see your face.

I watched Ross through the glass.

He seemed surprised by how much people were willing to share.

But he kept listening.

He didn't interrupt them with stories about himself.

He didn't try to turn their problems into a conversation about his own life.

He did his job.

When a caller finished, he made the necessary notes.

When another line blinked, he answered.

It wasn't a dramatic change.

There was no moment when he suddenly became a different person.

He was simply doing the next thing he was supposed to do.

I respected that.

The shift still had hours to go.

I knew there would be mistakes to learn from.

There always were.

But watching him work, I began to feel that the job might give him something he hadn't been willing to accept from our family.

A place where responsibility couldn't be replaced by confidence.

If he did the work, the shift moved forward.

If he didn't, someone would notice.

The equipment wouldn't respond to excuses.

The callers wouldn't wait forever.

The station needed reliability.

And Ross had to provide it.

I looked at the clock.

The night was moving on.

Across the glass, my brother reached for another line.

He checked the clipboard.

Then he answered.

I couldn't know whether he would keep this job.

I couldn't know whether it would change the way he treated people.

But for that night, he had arrived.

He had accepted instructions.

And he was working.

It was the first honest step I had seen him take in a long time.

<a
