13 – By Late April, My Brother Had Finally Found Work, but the Job Was Nothing Like the Successful Life He Had Pretended to Have

By the end of April, Ross had a job.

That should have been an ordinary thing to say about a forty-three-year-old man.

But after everything that happened, it meant something different.

He had spent months pretending he was still employed.

He had borrowed money while hiding that fact.

He had used the family account for expenses he couldn't explain.

And when I stopped his access, he had taken me to court.

Now he needed to work.

Not to impress anyone.

Not to maintain an expensive appearance.

He needed a paycheck.

The court had ordered him to repay three thousand one hundred and forty dollars, plus costs.

That amount wasn't going away because his life had become uncomfortable.

He had already admitted he couldn't pay without a job.

I had told him he would have to find one.

Eventually, he did.

At the radio station.

My radio station.

I remember thinking there was something strange about that.

For twenty years, the station had been the place where I knew what I was doing.

I understood the hours.

I understood the equipment.

I understood the small problems that could interrupt a broadcast.

Ross had spent years presenting himself as the more successful sibling.

Now he would be working in the same building where I had built my career.

And he wouldn't be coming in as someone important.

The manager hired him as an entry-level board operator.

It was a practical job.

There were calls to answer.

Requests to record.

Equipment to watch.

And instructions to follow.

He would work overnight.

Those were the hours I knew best.

I couldn't imagine Ross enjoying them.

He liked being noticed.

Night work often meant doing useful things nobody outside the building ever saw.

A caller could hear my voice.

They couldn't see the person making sure the correct line was ready.

They couldn't see the notes being written.

They couldn't see someone checking the equipment while the music played.

But the work mattered.

A broadcast depended on people doing those ordinary tasks properly.

I wondered whether Ross understood that yet.

I wasn't sure.

I knew the manager had hired him.

I knew what his responsibilities would be.

And I knew that part of his wages would go toward paying the court judgment under an agreed repayment arrangement.

That mattered to me.

Not because I wanted to watch him lose money.

Because the money had never belonged to him to spend as he pleased.

Mom had contributed.

Dad had contributed.

I had contributed.

The family account existed for all of us.

Ross had treated it as though he could use it to protect his reputation.

Now he would have to repay what the court ordered.

A little at a time.

Through actual work.

I thought about the contrast.

On New Year's Eve, he had wanted people to admire his expensive celebration.

He had paid for catering with the family card.

He had rented tables.

He had arranged a chocolate fountain.

Then he had told guests the cost was his responsibility.

Now he would be logging song requests during the night.

No elaborate decorations.

No speeches about generosity.

No guests praising him.

Just a shift.

A clipboard.

And work that had to be done.

I didn't know whether he would find it humiliating.

I hoped he wouldn't.

There was nothing shameful about an entry-level job.

There was nothing shameful about earning a living.

The shame had been in pretending.

The shame had been in taking money meant for family purposes and claiming he had paid for things himself.

The shame had been in leaving two children outside while he entertained guests.

I didn't want Ross to feel worthless because he needed a new job.

I wanted him to stop treating honest work as something beneath the image he had created.

Those were different things.

I had learned that distinction over many years.

Radio wasn't always glamorous.

People heard my voice and sometimes imagined a more exciting life than the one I actually had.

They didn't see the tired mornings.

They didn't see me coming home when other people were leaving for work.

They didn't see Marcus and me comparing schedules so one of us could be there for Calvin and Molly.

They didn't see me sitting with a cup of coffee after a long broadcast, trying to remember what still needed to be done at home.

I loved my work.

But I knew what it required.

You had to show up.

You had to be dependable.

You had to listen.

And sometimes you had to accept that the person on the other end of the line mattered more than your own desire to be heard.

Ross had never been especially good at that last part.

He liked talking.

He liked explaining.

He liked making sure people understood his accomplishments.

Listening had never seemed as important to him.

I wondered how he would manage a job where callers didn't care who he was.

They would want a song.

Or they would want to speak to someone.

Or they would need him to handle a request correctly.

They wouldn't be interested in his expensive suit.

They wouldn't ask about his New Year's party.

They wouldn't care whether he had once claimed to pay for everything himself.

He would be another employee working through the night.

I thought that might be good for him.

Then I reminded myself not to expect too much.

A job didn't automatically change a person.

Neither did losing a lawsuit.

Neither did having a spouse leave for her parents' house.

Those things created consequences.

They didn't guarantee understanding.

Ross had to decide what he did with them.

I couldn't decide for him.

I had spent too much time trying to manage the aftermath of his choices.

Now I needed to leave some of that responsibility where it belonged.

With him.

I still had boundaries.

The family account remained secured.

His authorization was gone.

I wasn't going to restore it because he had found employment.

The court judgment still mattered.

The repayment arrangement mattered.

And the children's safety remained more important than any attempt to make the family look united.

I thought about Calvin.

He had been twelve on New Year's Eve.

Old enough to recognize that something was wrong.

Young enough to believe his uncle wouldn't deliberately put him in danger.

He had tried to keep Molly calm.

He had waited for Grandpa.

He had knocked again when nobody came.

And he had decided not to call me because he thought I was too busy.

I could still hear him explaining that.

It was one of those moments I knew I would carry for a long time.

I didn't want him learning that being responsible meant tolerating harm without asking for help.

I wanted him to understand that even capable children needed adults.

Especially when something frightened them.

Molly was different.

She hadn't tried to explain everything.

She remembered the chocolate fountain.

The strawberries.

The warm room she could see through the window.

I still wondered what she had thought while standing there.

Had she believed someone would eventually let them in?

Had she wondered whether Jillian didn't want her around?

Had she thought she had done something wrong?

I couldn't know everything that went through her mind.

But I knew the invitation to Jillian's birthday had mattered.

Her name had been written on the envelope.

She had smiled when she saw it.

That small moment reminded me that the children were not responsible for the adults' conflict.

Ross had made harmful choices.

Allison and Jillian were still people my children cared about.

I didn't want to erase those relationships.

At the same time, I wasn't willing to pretend the danger had been minor.

That was the line I kept returning to.

Family relationships could continue.

But not at the expense of the children's safety.

I looked at the court paperwork one more time after hearing about Ross's employment.

The amount was still there.

Three thousand one hundred and forty dollars.

Plus court costs.

For weeks, the figure had been something I was trying to recover.

Now there was a practical way for repayment to begin.

Part of his wages would be directed toward the judgment.

I didn't need to stand over him and demand payment every day.

I didn't need to argue about the same bank charges again.

The arrangement would handle that.

I was relieved.

Not because I wanted the money more than anything else.

Because I wanted to stop fighting about whether he owed it.

The court had decided.

Ross needed to meet the obligation.

That was all.

I thought about how different things might have been if he had admitted the charges when I first confronted him.

He could have acknowledged using the family account.

He could have explained the expenses.

He could have agreed to repay the money.

The disagreement would still have been serious.

I would still have been furious about Calvin and Molly.

But he might have spared everyone the lawsuit.

He might have spared himself the embarrassment of having his claims examined in court.

He might have spared Allison another reason to question him.

Instead, he had insisted he was right.

He had claimed twelve deposits.

He had threatened legal action.

Then he had watched the magistrate compare his statements with the bank's records.

I didn't enjoy remembering his silence.

But I couldn't ignore what it represented.

For once, Ross had been unable to make a problem disappear with confidence.

He had needed evidence.

And he hadn't had it.

Now he needed something else.

Consistency.

One paycheck wouldn't settle the judgment.

One shift wouldn't rebuild trust.

One evening of doing his job wouldn't erase months of dishonesty.

He would have to continue.

He would have to show up when he was tired.

He would have to accept instructions.

He would have to work through the ordinary frustrations of a job.

And he would have to keep doing it after the first uncomfortable night.

I wondered whether he understood how repetitive that kind of responsibility could be.

There was no applause for paying what you owed.

No special recognition for arriving on time.

No party celebrating the fact that you had stopped making excuses.

You simply did what needed to be done.

Then you did it again.

I thought about Marcus's work at the hospital.

He did difficult things during every shift.

He didn't come home demanding praise for being responsible.

He was tired.

Sometimes he was quiet.

But he showed up.

And when he made a commitment to our children, he took it seriously.

I knew that because I had watched him do it for years.

That was the kind of reliability I wanted Ross to learn.

Not the appearance of success.

The habit of doing what you said you would do.

By late April, Ross had taken the first practical step.

He had accepted employment.

The job was modest.

The hours were difficult.

And the repayment arrangement meant he wouldn't keep every dollar he earned.

But it was real.

He was no longer simply telling people he was working.

He had a position.

A manager.

A schedule.

And responsibilities.

I had no reason to celebrate yet.

But I wasn't going to dismiss the step because it came late.

The court had required repayment.

Ross needed income.

He had found a way to begin.

I could recognize that without forgetting the past.

I could hope he would succeed without giving him access to the family account again.

I could work in the same building without pretending we were close.

Those things were possible.

At least, I wanted to believe they were.

The station had always been familiar territory for me.

Now it would become part of Ross's effort to repair what he had done.

I knew the first overnight shift would be uncomfortable.

For him.

Possibly for me.

But discomfort wasn't a reason to avoid honest work.

And I had spent enough time watching my brother run away from difficult truths.

This time, he was going to have to stay.

<a
