1 – I Was Celebrating the New Year on the Radio While My Children Waited Outside a House Where Their Uncle Refused to Let Them In

I used to believe my brother would protect my children if I couldn't be there.

I never thought I would have to question that.

Not once.

Then New Year's Eve came, and I learned what my trust was worth to him.

My son was twelve.

My daughter was nine.

And while I was wishing strangers a happy new year, they were sitting outside their uncle's expensive house in weather cold enough to hurt them.

They had nowhere to go.

The person who was supposed to be looking after them had not arrived.

And the person inside knew perfectly well they were waiting.

I didn't learn any of that until the following morning.

By then, the party was over.

The guests had gone home.

And my children had spent hours wondering whether anyone was coming for them.

My name is Dana Haskins.

I was forty years old that winter, living in Wichita, Kansas, with my husband, Marcus, and our two children.

Calvin was our oldest.

He was twelve and already had that serious way of looking at things that made people forget how young he was.

Molly was nine.

She still believed most adults meant what they said.

I wished I could tell you that belief survived that night.

Marcus worked as an emergency room nurse.

His schedule wasn't easy, but he cared about his patients, and he never complained much about the hours.

I worked nights, too.

For twenty years, I had made my living talking into a microphone.

By then, I was hosting an overnight radio program.

People called when they were lonely, when they couldn't sleep, or when something had happened that they couldn't tell anyone else.

Some wanted music.

Some wanted company.

A few just needed somebody to listen.

I thought that job had taught me how to handle difficult people.

I knew when to speak.

I knew when to let somebody finish.

And I knew that anger usually made a bad situation louder without making it better.

I was proud of that.

Maybe too proud.

Because when my own family became the subject of a terrible story, I had no idea how hard it would be to remain the calm person everyone expected.

My older brother, Ross, was forty-three.

He had always enjoyed being the person everyone noticed.

If he bought something expensive, the entire family heard about it.

If he organized a gathering, he made sure everybody knew what an impressive occasion it would be.

Ross liked being praised.

He liked being the man who made things happen.

And he liked people believing he could afford whatever he wanted.

His wife, Allison, had a large extended family.

Their teenage daughter, Jillian, was getting older and had started wanting more independence.

I understood that.

Children grew up.

Their interests changed.

Sometimes they wanted to spend time with people their own age.

None of that bothered me.

What bothered me was what Ross decided he was entitled to do about it.

For weeks before New Year's Eve, he had been talking about the party at his house.

He had arranged professional food service.

He had ordered decorations that looked more appropriate for a hotel celebration than a family gathering.

There would be rented tables, plenty of guests, and a chocolate fountain.

Molly had been especially interested in that last detail.

She loved strawberries.

She had asked whether people really dipped them into flowing chocolate.

I told her they did.

She smiled as if she had just been promised something wonderful.

Ross made sure everybody understood that he was hosting.

He said the evening was his responsibility.

He told relatives they shouldn't worry about contributing.

He wanted to provide everything himself.

I accepted that.

Why wouldn't I?

He was my brother.

We had grown up in the same family.

We had celebrated birthdays and holidays together for years.

I wasn't in the habit of examining every claim he made.

Looking back, I should have paid more attention to how often he wanted credit for things nobody had actually seen him pay for.

But that wasn't what I was thinking about in December.

I was thinking about childcare.

Marcus and I were both scheduled to work on New Year's Eve.

The hospital needed him.

The station needed me.

We couldn't take the evening off.

So the plan was for Calvin and Molly to spend the night at Ross's celebration with family.

My father had agreed to watch them.

That mattered to me.

Dad loved the children, and I knew he would make sure they were safe.

I didn't imagine there was anything complicated about the arrangement.

Marcus would drop them off.

Dad would supervise them.

Ross would have his big party.

And I would finish my broadcast knowing the children were having fun.

That was the plan.

It sounded ordinary.

I have thought about that word many times since.

Ordinary.

That was how the evening began.

On December thirty-first, I went to the station for my overnight shift.

The building had the usual holiday excitement.

People were talking about their plans.

Our producer, Abby, was preparing for the busy stretch of calls that always came around midnight.

New Year's Eve was one of the biggest nights for a radio program like ours.

People wanted songs for their spouses.

They wanted to tell their friends they loved them.

They wanted to announce resolutions they probably wouldn't remember by February.

I enjoyed it.

There was something comforting about hearing so many people celebrate the same moment in different places.

At home, Marcus was getting Calvin and Molly ready.

They had their party clothes on.

They were expecting to see family.

Molly was expecting chocolate-covered strawberries.

At 7:46 that evening, a message arrived from Marcus.

He told me he had taken the children to Ross's place and watched them go up to the entrance.

He was heading to the hospital.

He ended with a little reminder that he loved me.

I smiled at my phone.

Then I went back to work.

That was the last moment of the night when I believed everything was going the way it should.

I didn't know Ross had opened the door.

I didn't know he had looked at my children and decided they shouldn't come inside.

And I didn't know he had sent them back onto the porch to wait.

The weather was twenty-nine degrees.

Below freezing.

Calvin had a coat.

Molly had one, too.

But neither coat had been chosen for sitting outside for hours.

They were dressed to walk from a car into a warm house.

Not to spend the evening on a cold porch.

Inside, Ross's celebration was already underway.

People were eating.

Music filled the rooms.

Guests moved around tables covered with food.

The chocolate fountain Molly had been imagining was there.

So were the strawberries.

And my children were on the other side of the door.

At the station, everything seemed normal.

The evening moved forward.

Callers requested their favorite songs.

Abby checked the incoming lines.

I talked between music selections and kept the broadcast moving.

Every so often, I glanced at my phone.

There was nothing from Marcus suggesting a problem.

Nothing from Dad.

Nothing from Ross.

I took the silence as a good sign.

That was another mistake.

I thought no news meant everyone was comfortable.

I didn't understand that my children were trying so hard not to bother us that they weren't asking for help.

At 10:52, my phone rang.

The number wasn't familiar.

I didn't answer.

A moment later, it rang again.

Abby noticed.

She looked toward the phone and asked whether I needed to check it.

I told her I didn't recognize the caller.

It was New Year's Eve.

We were getting all kinds of requests and messages.

I assumed somebody was trying to reach the station through my personal number.

Maybe someone had been drinking.

Maybe somebody wanted to make a dedication.

I let the calls go unanswered.

I have replayed that small decision more times than I can count.

My phone was right there.

Two calls.

An unfamiliar number.

I could have checked.

I could have answered during the next break.

But I didn't.

At the time, there was no reason I knew of to be afraid.

That is what I told myself afterward.

It was true.

It just didn't make me feel any better.

The broadcast continued.

As midnight approached, the station became busy in that cheerful way it always did.

Abby watched the clock.

I prepared for the countdown.

People called from living rooms, kitchens, and parties around Wichita.

Some were laughing.

Some sounded emotional.

I remember thinking that the city felt connected for those few minutes.

Then the final seconds arrived.

I counted them down into the microphone.

Ten.

Nine.

Eight.

All the way to one.

The new year began.

The callers cheered.

I wished everyone a wonderful year ahead.

I hoped they were spending it with people who cared about them.

I actually said something like that.

And outside my brother's house, Calvin and Molly were still trying to stay warm.

They had been there since shortly before eight.

By midnight, they weren't on the porch anymore.

But I didn't know that yet.

I didn't know a man named Lamar had noticed them.

I didn't know he had brought them across the street.

I didn't know he had given them warmth and helped them reach their grandfather.

All I knew was that another holiday broadcast was going well.

I stayed behind the microphone until six in the morning.

By then, I was tired.

My throat felt dry.

The excitement of midnight had faded into quieter conversations.

I finished the final part of my shift and started collecting my things.

Abby looked toward my phone.

She reminded me about the two calls from the night before.

I had forgotten them.

That makes me ashamed to admit.

I had forgotten.

I picked up the phone.

There was a voicemail.

I pressed the button and listened.

An older man's voice came through the speaker.

He introduced himself as Lamar.

He said he lived opposite Ross.

Then he mentioned Calvin.

My hand stopped moving.

Lamar explained that my son had given him my number.

He had tried reaching me.

He had also tried calling my father.

Then he told me the children were safe.

He had taken them into his house to get them warm.

I remember feeling relieved for one brief second.

Relieved.

Then I heard the rest.

My children had been outside Ross's house for hours.

They had arrived before eight.

Nobody had brought them inside.

I listened without moving.

When the message ended, I played it again.

I needed to be certain I had heard it correctly.

I knew the address.

I knew the arrangement.

I knew my father was supposed to be there.

What I couldn't understand was why an elderly neighbor had been the person to find my children.

Abby was still nearby.

I don't remember what I said to her.

I only remember putting my things together and leaving the studio.

The building felt strangely quiet after such a noisy night.

Outside, the cold struck my face.

For the first time, I thought about what twenty-nine degrees actually felt like when you weren't moving.

I thought about Molly's little hands.

I thought about Calvin trying to act grown-up.

And I thought about that chocolate fountain.

I didn't know why.

Not yet.

I drove to my father's house.

By 6:40, I was inside his kitchen.

The children were sitting at the table.

Their party clothes were wrinkled.

They looked tired in a way I had never wanted to see.

Molly spotted me first.

She came straight toward me.

Her arms wrapped around my waist, and she held on.

Calvin stayed where he was.

He looked at me, then lowered his eyes.

He was trying to be brave.

That hurt almost as much as seeing his sister cling to me.

I crouched beside him.

I asked him to tell me what had happened from the beginning.

He took a breath.

And then my twelve-year-old son told me that his uncle had answered the door.

Ross had seen both children standing there.

He had spoken to them.

And he had refused to let them come inside.

I stared at Calvin.

For a moment, I couldn't find a question that made sense.

Then I asked why.

Calvin looked down at his hands.

He said Jillian was having a celebration with the older children.

Uncle Ross didn't want him and Molly getting in their way.

So Ross had told them to stay on the porch until Grandpa came.

And my children had done exactly what their uncle told them.

Because they believed him.

Because they were children.

Because adults were supposed to know what they were doing.

I looked toward my father.

He was standing nearby with a face I barely recognized.

He looked crushed.

And I knew there was more I needed to hear.
