13 – On the Eighty-Sixth Day, My Iron Bar Struck Something My Father Had Built, and I Finally Understood How Close I Had Come

I had imagined reaching the well so many times that I stopped trusting my imagination.

Whenever the ground changed, I wanted to believe I was close.

Whenever the iron bar struck stone, I wondered whether it belonged to the wall my father had built.

But I had learned to be careful with hope.

Hope had made me impatient before.

Impatience had nearly buried me alive.

So on the morning of the eighty-sixth day, I did not tell myself that anything important was about to happen.

I got out of bed.

I washed my face.

I ate a little bread.

Then I prepared the lantern.

The kitchen was cold enough that I could see my breath near the door.

Outside, the mountain stood beneath a gray sky.

The heavy snow had not yet arrived.

I knew how fortunate that was.

The usual time for the first great storm was almost upon us.

I had begun digging with ninety days in mind.

Now there were only a few days left before that number became meaningless.

Winter might arrive tomorrow.

Or it might wait.

I had no way to know.

I looked toward the well through the kitchen window.

The wooden frame stood above the stone opening.

It looked exactly as it had when my father was alive.

I wondered whether I would ever see it again without remembering how he died.

Then I turned away.

There was work to do.

Eulogio arrived while I was checking the rope attached to the bell.

He carried no new beams that morning.

The oak supports we had prepared were already waiting beside the opening.

He looked at the sky through the window.

Then he looked at me.

"Cold morning."

"Colder than yesterday."

He nodded.

"Eat enough before you go down."

"I have."

He studied my face.

I almost smiled.

He had become as difficult to deceive about my meals as my father had been.

I picked up the lantern.

He checked the bell rope.

One pull.

A clear ring.

Three pulls.

Three separate sounds.

Then we examined the ventilation.

The flame remained steady.

The passage was ready.

I lowered myself beneath the kitchen floor.

Eulogio followed far enough to inspect the supports.

We moved through the familiar route.

Past the first frames.

Around the stone that had cost me nine days.

Through the repaired section where the roof had once fallen.

Every place held a memory.

I could have described the tunnel without seeing it.

I knew where my shoulder might brush the wall.

I knew where the floor rose slightly.

I knew which supports had been fitted by my hands alone and which Eulogio had helped strengthen.

At the far end, I stopped.

The earth smelled damp.

Not like ordinary soil after rain.

There was a cooler smell beneath it.

Stone.

Water.

Something familiar.

I had noticed it growing stronger during the previous days.

Now it seemed impossible to ignore.

Eulogio lifted the lantern.

He examined the wall ahead.

We had already exposed part of the stonework.

It was carefully fitted.

The surrounding earth held moisture.

I remembered watching my father choose stones for the well.

He had rejected pieces I thought perfectly good.

Sometimes he had turned a stone several times before finding the position he wanted.

I used to become impatient.

Now I was grateful he had been so demanding.

We checked the support nearest the wall.

Then I picked up the iron bar.

I placed its end against the earth beside the exposed stones.

I pushed carefully.

The soil loosened.

I removed a small amount.

Then I tested again.

This time, the iron struck something solid.

The sound traveled through the bar into my hands.

I stopped.

I knew that sound.

It was not the dull resistance of packed earth.

It was the hard answer of stone.

I moved the lantern closer.

Eulogio waited.

I brushed away the remaining soil.

The surface beneath it was part of a larger arrangement.

Stone against stone.

Fitted with care.

I looked at the line they formed.

My mouth went dry.

I had seen that kind of work before.

I had watched it being built.

I touched the surface.

Cold.

Solid.

Real.

For a moment, I could not speak.

Eulogio examined the wall.

Then he looked at me.

"Do you recognize it?"

"I think so."

He waited.

"My father built it this way."

My voice sounded strange inside the tunnel.

I had spent eighty-six days trying to reach something he had made years earlier.

Now it was beneath my hand.

I wanted to remove the earth quickly.

I wanted to see the entire wall.

But I knew better.

We examined the stones carefully.

The well had to remain strong.

I could not damage its outer structure simply because I was eager to reach the water.

I used the shovel to clear soil from a narrow area.

Then I brushed the stone with my fingers.

A shallow mark appeared.

At first, I thought it was an ordinary scratch.

I brought the lantern closer.

There were two marks.

Letters.

Small and partly covered by clay.

I wiped them gently.

F.

A.

I stared at them.

My father's initials.

He had carved them into the stone when he built the well.

I remembered seeing him mark his work.

I remembered asking why he bothered when the stone would be hidden beneath the ground.

He had said very little.

My father was like that.

He did not always explain the things that mattered most to him.

I had forgotten about those letters.

Now they were in front of me.

I touched the first one.

Then the second.

F.

A.

My hands began trembling.

I had not cried when I found my father against the fence.

I had barely cried at his funeral.

For months, I had been too occupied with surviving to understand how much grief I carried.

But those two letters undid me.

I lowered my head.

The lantern light moved across the stones.

Eulogio said nothing.

I was grateful.

I did not need anyone to explain what I was feeling.

I knew whose hands had made those marks.

I knew how much work lay behind them.

I knew the man who had placed that stone was never coming home.

For a moment, I could almost see him kneeling beside the well.

His sleeves rolled up.

His fingers dusty.

His face serious as he chose another stone.

I wanted to tell him I had reached it.

I wanted to tell him about the tunnel.

About the rock.

About the collapse.

About the bell.

I wanted to admit how often I had ignored his lessons before finally understanding them.

But there was no one to tell.

Only Eulogio and the stone.

I wiped my face with my sleeve.

Then I looked at the initials again.

They were still there.

I had not imagined them.

The wall before us belonged to my father's well.

That was the first certainty I had felt in weeks.

I had reached the structure.

The water was somewhere beyond it.

But the passage was not connected yet.

We still had to find a safe opening.

Eulogio examined the surrounding stones.

He reminded me that the well had stood for years because its wall was properly built.

We could not remove stones carelessly.

I agreed.

We studied how the pieces fitted together.

We checked the soil above.

We examined the support behind us.

Only then did we begin considering which stones could be removed without disturbing the others.

I wanted to finish that morning.

I wanted to carry water into the kitchen before the sun went down.

But wanting it did not make the work safe.

I reminded myself of the forty-fourth day.

The sound of the collapsing roof still lived in my memory.

I would not let the final few inches become the most dangerous part of the tunnel.

We returned to the kitchen to rest.

The daylight surprised me.

I had spent so much time underground that I had almost forgotten how ordinary the house looked from above.

The table stood beside the wall.

The hearth held a small fire.

The buckets rested near the door.

Everything appeared unchanged.

But beneath the floor, I had found my father's initials.

I sat down.

Eulogio poured water into a cup.

He handed it to me.

I drank slowly.

Then I told him I remembered watching my father carve those letters.

He listened.

I explained how I had thought the mark was pointless because nobody would see it.

Eulogio looked toward the kitchen opening.

"Someone saw it."

I nodded.

I could not answer.

That simple sentence meant more than he probably intended.

My father had left something beneath the earth.

Not for people to admire.

Not for money.

Not for recognition.

He had built a well that would continue giving water long after he was gone.

And now his daughter had reached it from below.

I looked at the cup in my hands.

The water inside had come from that same well.

I had carried it across the yard earlier.

Soon, perhaps, I would no longer need to.

The thought made me feel both relieved and frightened.

I was so close that failure would hurt differently now.

At the beginning, the tunnel had been an idea.

When I reached the rock, it became a struggle.

After the collapse, it became something I feared.

Now it was almost complete.

But almost was not enough.

The winter would not care how close I had come.

If the passage remained blocked, I would still have to go outside.

I set down the cup.

Then I stood.

Eulogio looked at me.

"Are you ready?"

I nodded.

"We'll go slowly."

He smiled a little.

"That's what I wanted to hear."

We returned underground.

The damp smell grew stronger as we approached the stonework.

I carried the lantern.

Eulogio helped me examine the wall again.

We marked the stones that appeared suitable for careful removal.

We checked the support.

Then I placed my hands against the first stone.

It did not move.

I worked the surrounding clay away.

The stone shifted slightly.

I stopped.

We checked the wall again.

Nothing above had moved.

I continued.

The first stone came loose.

I held it in both hands.

It was heavier than I expected.

I moved it carefully into the passage.

Then we examined the opening.

More stone lay beyond.

There was no water yet.

But the air felt cooler.

I could smell the well more clearly.

I looked at the stone beside my knee.

It was one my father had placed.

I did not know whether he had touched it last on a summer morning or late in the afternoon.

I did not know what he had been thinking when he fitted it.

But I knew he had wanted the wall to endure.

I was relying on that work now.

We prepared to remove another stone.

Again, we checked the surrounding structure.

Again, we loosened the clay slowly.

The second stone shifted.

I worked it free.

Then I placed it beside the first.

The opening grew wider.

Cool air reached my face.

I closed my eyes for a moment.

It carried the unmistakable smell of deep water.

Eulogio leaned closer.

Neither of us spoke.

We had not reached the water itself.

But we were no longer guessing about what lay beyond the wall.

I looked at the third stone.

It remained in place.

We would need to remove it carefully.

The passage was narrow.

The working space was limited.

And the stones around it had to remain stable.

I placed the lantern where its light would reach the opening.

Then I checked the roof one more time.

I had waited eighty-six days.

I could wait a few more minutes to do the work properly.

I touched the carved initials again before moving my hand away.

F.

A.

The letters were small.

The stone was cold.

But for the first time since my father died, I felt that the distance between his work and mine had become very small.

He had dug down to the water.

I had dug toward it from the kitchen.

We had worked from different directions, years apart.

And now our work met beneath the earth.

I took hold of the third stone.

I began loosening it.

Carefully.

Just as he had taught me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: I Removed Three Stones From My Father’s Well and Carried Water Into My
