10 – As the Mountain Grew Colder, I Began to Understand Why My Father Had Trusted the Well More Than Any Promise of Safety

The cold entered our kitchen before the first heavy snow.

I noticed it in the mornings.

The stones beneath my feet seemed harder.

The water in the basin felt sharper against my hands.

When I opened the door, the air reached through my clothes.

I had lived through winters in Valdeondo all my life.

I knew what was coming.

That knowledge made the unfinished tunnel feel both more important and more frightening.

I had already spent much of autumn underground.

The passage had become part of my daily life.

I measured my mornings by the lantern.

My afternoons by the buckets of soil.

My evenings by how much strength remained in my arms.

But outside, the mountain was keeping its own calendar.

It did not care about my progress.

One morning, I found frost along the fence where my father had fallen.

I stood looking at it.

The ground beyond the yard was pale.

The well's stone rim felt cold beneath my fingers.

I lowered the bucket.

Water answered from below.

That sound still comforted me.

It was steady.

Familiar.

I had heard it since childhood.

My father had believed that the well would remain dependable through the harshest months.

He had dug deep enough to reach a source that did not disappear during summer heat.

He had placed the water far enough beneath the surface that winter frost could not easily reach it.

I trusted his work.

What I could not trust was the weather between the well and our door.

I filled the bucket.

Then I looked toward the kitchen.

Forty paces.

I had begun to dislike that number.

Not because it was large.

Because it was small.

A man should have been able to walk forty paces home.

A father should have been able to bring water to his sick daughter.

Yet mine had died before reaching the door.

I carried the bucket carefully.

The frost made the ground slippery.

I could already imagine the path disappearing beneath snow.

When I reached the kitchen, I set the water near the hearth.

Then I looked down through the floor opening.

The tunnel waited.

Dark.

Narrow.

Unfinished.

But it was already safer in one important way.

Inside it, I could follow a supported passage instead of searching for the house through blowing snow.

I could feel the walls.

I could reach for the bell rope.

I could move slowly without losing direction.

That was what I was building.

Not comfort.

Not convenience.

A reliable way home.

Eulogio arrived after sunrise.

He carried the same quiet patience he brought every day.

He looked at the frost outside.

Then at the kitchen opening.

"The mountain's turning."

"I know."

He did not need to explain.

We both understood that the weather could change quickly now.

I showed him the section I had worked on the previous afternoon.

The soil had grown cooler.

He examined it carefully.

Then he asked how far I believed we were from the well.

I showed him my measurements.

The detour had made the route longer than I originally planned.

But the direction was still clear.

We had been checking it repeatedly.

I wanted the numbers to tell me that the end was close.

They could not.

They told me only how far I had already traveled.

Eulogio studied the marks.

Then he asked about the supports ahead.

I explained where I planned to place the next frame.

He nodded.

"Good."

I felt relieved.

Then he added that we would still check the ground before removing more earth.

I smiled slightly.

He had become very good at reminding me of things I already knew.

I needed those reminders.

We entered the tunnel.

The first sections were familiar.

The supports stood in a row behind the kitchen opening.

The passage turned around the great stone.

Then it continued toward the well.

We passed the place where the roof had fallen.

I still noticed it every time.

I still remembered the darkness.

But the memory no longer stopped me.

The oak beams were firm.

The repaired section had held through many days of work.

We had checked it repeatedly.

I trusted it because we had done the work properly.

At the far end, I set down the lantern.

Eulogio examined the roof.

Then we began.

The shovel entered the soil.

I filled a bucket.

We moved it back through the passage.

Then another.

The work was slow.

There was no way to make it graceful.

My knees pressed against the earth.

My shoulders rubbed against the sides.

Sometimes my neck ached from keeping my head low.

But I had become stronger in ways I had not expected.

I could judge the weight of a bucket almost without looking.

I could feel when the shovel met firm ground.

I could recognize when a support needed adjustment.

Those skills did not make me fearless.

They made me useful.

And I had begun to value that more.

At midday, we returned to the kitchen.

Eulogio ate bread with me.

The fire burned steadily.

He asked whether I had enough potatoes stored for winter.

I told him what remained.

He nodded.

We had begun discussing supplies more often.

At first, I found that embarrassing.

I did not want him to think I could not manage my own household.

But he never treated those conversations as proof of weakness.

He treated them as part of the work.

A tunnel would not help much if I became too ill or hungry to use it.

I knew he was right.

Still, I had trouble accepting how much I depended on the flour and firewood he had brought.

My father had once done him a kindness.

Now that kindness was returning to our kitchen.

I wondered whether my father had imagined such a thing.

Probably not.

He had simply helped a shepherd who needed water.

I had spent years assuming every favor should be counted and repaid.

Don Baltazar certainly seemed to believe that.

Eulogio had shown me a different way.

He had remembered what my father did.

And when he saw me struggling, he had come.

No bargain.

No demand.

No bag of coins waiting on the table.

I thought about that while we ate.

Then I looked toward the window.

The well stood outside.

I wondered how many people in Valdeondo remembered my father only as a skilled worker.

How many remembered the water he had found for them.

How many had forgotten the times he refused payment.

It was not a question I could answer.

But Eulogio's presence made me think that a person's work sometimes continued long after they were gone.

Not only in the things they built.

In the people they helped.

After eating, we returned underground.

The soil changed again.

It was not a dramatic difference.

But I noticed that some of it held a little more moisture.

I touched it.

Then I looked at Eulogio.

He examined it.

We both knew what I was thinking.

The well lay ahead.

The ground near it might be different.

But neither of us said we were close.

We had learned not to treat a hopeful sign as proof.

We checked the roof.

We prepared the next support.

Then we continued.

Later that afternoon, I struck a small stone with the iron bar.

It loosened easily.

I removed it.

Behind it, the soil was firm enough to work.

I filled another bucket.

Then another.

The passage grew by a small amount.

When we stopped, I felt tired but satisfied.

We had made progress without damaging the roof.

That was enough.

Outside, the daylight was fading.

The cold came quickly after sunset now.

Eulogio helped me carry the tools into the kitchen.

We checked the bell rope.

Then he left.

I watched him lead the mule down the path.

His figure became smaller against the darkening slope.

I closed the door.

The house was quiet again.

But it no longer felt abandoned.

There was food beside the hearth.

There was timber waiting near the opening.

There was a bell hanging where it could be heard.

And beneath the floor, there was a passage that had grown because two people had cared enough to build it safely.

I sat at the table.

I thought about the first time Don Baltazar had come.

He had told me that a girl alone could not survive the winter.

He had offered money for the land.

At the time, I believed the choice was between accepting his offer and proving I could do everything myself.

I had not imagined a third possibility.

That I could remain without pretending I was entirely alone.

It was a simple realization.

But it changed how I thought about the village.

I had been hurt by the laughter.

I had been frightened by Don Baltazar's power.

I had begun believing that everyone below the hill was waiting for me to fail.

Then Jacinta brought bread.

Eulogio brought beams.

Neither had asked what they would receive.

I could not pretend all the villagers were alike anymore.

Some mocked me.

Some stayed silent.

Some helped.

Those differences mattered.

A few days later, I went to the store with the coins I still had.

I needed a small amount of something I could not make at home.

I had avoided the store whenever possible since Don Baltazar ended my credit.

But there were times I had to go.

The room became quieter when I entered.

I was accustomed to that now.

Someone looked at my hands.

Someone else asked whether I had finished digging through the mountain.

I said I was still working toward the well.

There was laughter.

Not loud.

Just enough to remind me that the joke remained alive.

I paid for what I needed.

Then I turned to leave.

A man near the door asked whether I planned to spend the whole winter underground.

I looked at him.

"No."

He smiled.

I continued.

"I plan to spend the winter inside my house."

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then someone laughed again.

I left before the conversation could continue.

Outside, the cold air felt cleaner than the store.

I walked uphill with my purchases.

I did not feel victorious.

I had not changed anyone's opinion.

But I had told the truth.

The tunnel was not meant to make me disappear beneath the ground.

It was meant to let me remain safely above it.

That evening, I told Eulogio what had happened.

He listened.

Then he asked whether I had bought what I needed.

I said yes.

"Then the trip wasn't wasted."

I laughed.

It surprised me.

I had not laughed much since my father's death.

Eulogio smiled briefly.

Then he returned to examining a piece of timber.

That was how he helped me.

He rarely made grand statements.

He simply refused to let the village's laughter become more important than the work.

The days continued growing colder.

The mountain shadows reached the valley earlier.

I began keeping the door closed longer.

I checked the firewood carefully.

I counted the stored potatoes.

I made certain the kitchen opening remained protected when I was not working.

Every task seemed connected to the coming winter.

Sometimes I stood beside the well and tried to imagine the first great snowfall.

I pictured the path disappearing.

The fence becoming difficult to see.

The wind making the forty paces impossible to judge.

Then I went inside and looked at the tunnel.

It was my answer to that image.

Not a perfect answer.

Not yet.

But one that was taking shape.

I knew the passage might still fail.

I knew I might run out of time.

I knew the weather could arrive earlier than expected.

Those uncertainties were real.

But so was the work beneath my kitchen.

So were the supports.

So was the ventilation.

So was the bell.

And so was the water waiting at the other end.

One evening, after checking the measurements again, I realized I had stopped imagining the city.

I no longer pictured taking Don Baltazar's money and leaving.

I no longer wondered what sort of room I might rent.

I still understood why someone in my position might choose to go.

But I had made my choice.

I wanted to stay where my father had taught me to live.

I wanted to finish the passage.

I wanted to fetch water without walking into a storm.

That was not a grand dream.

It was something small enough to fit inside a kitchen.

And important enough that I was willing to spend the remaining days of autumn working toward it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: Every Wooden Support Brought Me Closer to the Well, but I Had to Stop Measuring
