7 – The Man Who Wanted My Land Returned With Fewer Coins, but an Old Shepherd Remembered a Debt My Father Never Collected

Don Baltazar placed the bag on my table as though nothing unusual had happened.

It was the same bag I remembered.

The same worn cloth.

The same small sound of coins striking one another.

But it was lighter.

I noticed that immediately.

He had promised to reduce his offer if I waited.

Now he had come to show me that he meant it.

I stood beside the table with my hands hanging at my sides.

They were still swollen from the collapse.

I had tried to wash every trace of soil away.

But dirt remained beneath some of my nails.

My clothes were clean enough.

My face was not.

I had barely slept.

Don Baltazar looked at me for a moment.

Then he glanced toward the opening in the kitchen floor.

He asked whether the digging had stopped.

I did not answer immediately.

He could see that it had.

I knew there was no point pretending otherwise.

I told him I had been unable to work for two days.

He nodded.

He did not ask whether I was injured.

He did not ask what had happened.

Instead, he spoke about how dangerous underground work could be.

He reminded me that he had warned me.

I could feel my face becoming hot.

I wanted to tell him that my father had taught me more about wells than he would ever know.

But I remembered the darkness.

The soil around my legs.

The fear that I would never reach the kitchen.

I could not pretend I had been careful.

He asked whether I was finally ready to discuss the property.

I looked at the bag.

The coins inside were fewer than before.

He told me he was still willing to purchase the land.

But the price had changed.

He said the risk was greater now.

He said the damage I had done to the house might make the property less valuable.

He spoke as if the reduction were simply a matter of fairness.

I knew what he wanted.

He wanted me to believe I had already lost too much to refuse.

He wanted the memory of the collapse to finish what hunger had begun.

I sat down.

My legs still hurt.

Don Baltazar took the chair opposite me without waiting for an invitation.

For a moment, the room was quiet.

I could hear the wind touching the window.

I looked past him toward the well.

The wooden frame stood where it always had.

My father's work.

I thought about the empty coat hook.

I thought about the tools beside the floor.

I thought about the little girl who had climbed the hill with bread.

All those things belonged to my life.

The coins did not.

But I also knew the difference between pride and survival.

I had come very close to dying.

I had little money.

The tunnel was damaged.

Winter was approaching.

I could not simply ignore those facts.

Don Baltazar seemed to understand my silence as hesitation.

He began explaining what I could do with the money.

I could leave before the pass closed.

I could find work in the city.

I could begin again without carrying the burden of a house I could not maintain.

I listened.

Some of what he said was reasonable.

That was what made him difficult.

He did not need every word to be false.

He only needed the reasonable parts to lead me toward the decision he wanted.

I asked whether he would buy the property without the well.

He looked surprised.

Then he shook his head.

The well was part of the land.

I had known he would say that.

Still, I wanted to hear it.

I wanted to make certain I understood what he was offering to take.

He was not simply buying a difficult house from an orphan.

He was buying the best water source on the upper slope.

A well that had continued flowing through the hottest months.

A well that could be used when the shallow sources struggled.

He had never looked at our property as my father and I did.

To him, its value was something that could be counted and owned.

I looked at the bag again.

There were enough coins to change my immediate situation.

Perhaps not enough to build a secure future.

But enough to escape the coming winter.

I imagined the city.

I knew almost nothing about living there.

I would arrive alone.

I would have money for a while.

Then I would need to find work and shelter.

Perhaps I could manage.

Perhaps I could not.

I looked toward the kitchen opening.

At least here, I knew the ground.

I knew the house.

I knew the water.

I knew why I was trying to stay.

Don Baltazar asked whether I had made up my mind.

I wanted to say no.

I wanted to send him away.

But the words did not come.

I was frightened of making another bad decision.

I had already trusted my own judgment once and nearly been buried.

I wondered whether refusing him again would be another form of stubbornness.

That was the worst part of the collapse.

It had made me doubt not only my ability to dig, but my ability to choose.

Don Baltazar waited.

Then he said the offer would not remain open at that price forever.

He spoke gently.

As if he were giving me useful advice.

I looked at his clean hands resting near the bag.

Then I looked at my own.

I thought about the hours he had spent watching my work from a distance.

I thought about the credit he had taken away.

I thought about the villagers repeating his warnings.

He had not caused the collapse.

That had been my mistake.

But he had been waiting for a mistake he could use.

I understood that clearly.

I did not give him an answer.

I told him I needed to think.

He did not seem pleased.

He looked toward the window again.

Then he closed the bag.

The coins shifted inside.

I remembered the first time he had done that.

He stood.

He said I should not wait until there was no choice left.

Then he left the kitchen.

I watched him walk down the hill.

His coat moved in the wind.

He did not look back.

I closed the door.

For several minutes, I stood with my hand against it.

I had not accepted his offer.

But I had not refused it, either.

That troubled me.

I had been certain the first time.

Now I was not certain of anything.

The room was quiet.

The floor remained open.

The damaged tunnel waited beneath it.

I moved the bag of flour away from the table and sat down.

There was very little left.

I measured some into a bowl.

I could make it last a few more days if I was careful.

Beyond that, I had no proper answer.

I thought about Jacinta.

I did not want to depend on a seven-year-old child for food.

She had already done more than anyone could reasonably expect.

I could not turn her kindness into an obligation.

I thought about going to the village and asking someone for work.

But winter was near, and my tunnel already demanded more time than I could spare.

I had built a problem around myself that I could no longer solve by effort alone.

I sat there until the light began fading.

Then I heard something outside.

At first, I thought it was wind against the fence.

Then came the slow sound of hooves.

I went to the window.

An old mule was climbing the path.

A man walked beside it.

I recognized him before he reached the house.

Eulogio.

He was an old shepherd who lived in the valley.

I had known him since childhood.

He was not a man who spoke more than necessary.

His clothes always seemed to smell faintly of wool and the outdoors.

He had spent so many years among the hills that he walked as if uneven ground were easier for him than a flat road.

I opened the door before he knocked.

He greeted me quietly.

Then he looked at the kitchen.

He saw the opening in the floor.

He saw the tools.

He saw the dirt that still clung to the edges of the stones.

He asked whether I was hurt.

That question nearly made me cry.

Don Baltazar had looked at the same room and asked about the property.

Eulogio looked at me.

I told him I had been caught in a collapse.

He studied my hands.

Then he asked whether I could still walk properly.

I said I could.

He nodded.

He did not make a speech about my recklessness.

He did not tell me I should abandon the work.

Instead, he asked whether the roof had fallen near a support.

I explained where it had happened.

He listened carefully.

Then he walked outside.

I followed him.

The mule stood near the fence.

On its back were heavy oak beams.

I stared at them.

They were exactly the kind of timber I had been worrying about.

Strong wood.

Wood that could help repair the damaged section and reinforce the passage.

I asked why he had brought them.

Eulogio looked toward the well.

Then he told me something I remembered only vaguely.

Years earlier, my father had dug a well for him.

The work had been difficult.

Eulogio had wanted to pay.

But my father had refused the money.

He had said that finding water was a useful skill, not a reason to take advantage of someone who needed it.

Eulogio had never forgotten.

I remembered my father coming home from that job.

He had been tired.

I had asked whether the shepherd had paid him.

My father had said some work was worth doing even when money did not change hands.

I had not understood.

We had needed money then, too.

I had thought he was being impractical.

Now an old mule stood outside our house carrying oak beams.

I began to understand.

Eulogio said he had come to help me continue.

I told him I could not pay for the timber.

He waved away the concern.

He said my father had already given him more than he could repay.

I tried to explain that the tunnel was dangerous.

He said he knew.

I told him people in the village thought I was foolish.

He looked at me.

Then he asked whether the ground had become any less dangerous because people laughed at it.

I shook my head.

He said that was what mattered.

He had not come to discuss the jokes.

He had come to examine the work.

I stepped aside and let him enter.

We carried the first beams inside together.

The wood was heavy.

My arms protested.

Eulogio noticed.

He made me put down my end.

Then he told me to rest while he moved the next one.

I wanted to argue.

I had spent weeks trying to prove I could do everything myself.

But I remembered how that pride had nearly trapped me underground.

So I sat down.

It felt strange.

Watching someone else work in my house.

Watching another pair of hands handle the materials.

I had thought accepting help might make the tunnel feel less like my own achievement.

Instead, I felt something I had not felt in weeks.

Relief.

Eulogio examined the kitchen opening.

He asked about the depth and direction of the passage.

I showed him my measurements.

I told him about the rock and the nine-day detour.

He listened without interrupting.

Then I explained the collapse.

I did not hide what I had done.

I told him I had advanced without fitting enough supports.

I told him I had heard the crack and still delayed leaving.

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then he said I had learned an expensive lesson.

I looked down.

He did not need to say more.

We both knew what could have happened.

He asked whether I was willing to work slowly from then on.

I said yes.

He asked whether I meant it even if snow came before I finished.

That was harder.

I thought about the well.

The forty paces.

My father.

Then I nodded.

I could not build a safe passage by pretending winter would wait.

Eulogio examined the tools.

He tested the rope.

He looked at the wooden frames I had prepared.

Then he stood beside the opening and studied the darkness.

He said we would strengthen what needed strengthening before removing another bucket of earth.

We.

That word stayed with me.

I had not heard it used about my work since my father died.

I had been saying I for months.

I would dig.

I would carry.

I would finish.

Now someone had arrived with timber and said we.

I looked at Eulogio.

His face was lined by years outdoors.

His hands were rough.

He was not young enough to work carelessly.

He knew that.

So did I.

He was not offering to do the whole job.

He was offering what I had been missing.

Experience beside my own.

A second pair of eyes.

Someone who would tell me to stop when I wanted to hurry.

That evening, we began sorting the beams.

We planned how to repair the fallen section.

We discussed which supports needed replacing.

I felt tired.

I still had bruises.

I was still frightened of going underground.

But the fear had changed.

It no longer seemed like a reason to surrender the house.

It seemed like something I had to respect while I worked.

Before leaving, Eulogio looked toward the well again.

Then he told me he had not come because he believed the tunnel was easy.

He had come because he knew my father had taught me how to attempt difficult things properly.

I did not answer.

I was afraid my voice would shake.

After he left, I stood beside the oak beams.

The kitchen smelled of fresh-cut wood and damp earth.

The tunnel remained unfinished.

Don Baltazar still wanted the property.

Winter was still approaching.

But I had not sold the land.

And for the first time since the collapse, I could imagine returning underground without pretending I had nothing to fear.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: The Shepherd Taught Me How to Ask for Help Before It Was Too Late, and I Finally
