17 – The Fire Was Burning Low, and I Had to Face the Truth That Twenty Gold Coins Could Not Save Me From Every Danger

I had begun to understand that finding shelter was not the same as being safe forever.

The distinction troubled me.

I wanted the cabin to be the answer to everything.

I wanted its walls to protect me until I had a clear idea of what to do next.

I wanted the storm to end.

I wanted the road to reappear.

I wanted to stop worrying about food and money.

But wanting those things did not make them happen.

I sat beside the fireplace with my mother's gray blanket wrapped around my shoulders.

The flames had become smaller.

There was very little wood remaining from the broken chair.

I could see the pieces I had saved beside the hearth.

They looked pitifully small.

I remembered how much relief I had felt when the first flame caught.

At the time, I hadn't considered how long the fire would need to burn.

I had been thinking about the next minute.

The next breath.

The next chance to feel warmth in my fingers.

Now I had to think beyond that.

I leaned forward and examined the wood.

Some pieces were too thick to catch easily without smaller kindling.

Others were so thin that they would disappear almost immediately.

I separated them carefully.

Grandpa had taught me to consider the purpose of each piece before using it.

A short length of timber might be useless for one task and exactly right for another.

I had watched him save scraps that other people would have thrown away.

When I was younger, I thought he simply disliked waste.

Now I understood there was more to it.

He knew that a person might need something later that seemed unimportant today.

I looked at the last few pieces of furniture.

They represented warmth.

Not much.

But some.

I couldn't afford to use them carelessly.

I selected one thin piece and moved it toward the embers.

A small flame rose along its edge.

I waited until it caught.

Then I sat back.

One thing done.

I thought about the metal box beside my bundle.

Twenty gold coins.

I could not stop remembering that number.

It was almost ridiculous.

I had more wealth within reach than I had ever expected to see.

Yet I was worrying about how to keep a small fire alive.

I couldn't eat the gold.

I couldn't burn it.

I couldn't use it to tell me where the mountain road lay beneath the snow.

It might help me someday.

But it couldn't solve the problem immediately in front of me.

I had never understood that so clearly.

When Elias handed me twelve dollars, I thought the amount of money I possessed would determine everything.

I had been terrified of spending it.

I had refused a warm room in Pinewood because I wanted the money to last.

Then I had walked into a storm.

I had nearly died trying to preserve a little money.

Now I sat beside a box of gold and understood that making a safe decision could matter more than possessing something valuable.

That was an uncomfortable lesson.

I wished I had learned it under gentler circumstances.

I looked at my shoes.

They were sitting near the fireplace.

The leather had dried, but they remained worn.

I could remember snow filling them while I struggled through the mountains.

My feet had become so cold that I could barely feel the ground beneath them.

I didn't want to repeat that experience.

I reached for one shoe and examined the stitching.

It had endured the journey.

But I could see how little protection it would offer in another storm.

I put it down.

My coat was no better.

The torn place near the shoulder remained where the window frame had caught it.

I had folded the damaged fabric inward.

That helped a little.

But it wasn't a proper repair.

I wished I had a needle and thread.

I wished I had dry clothing suited to mountain weather.

I wished I had listened to the warning in the sky before leaving Pinewood.

There were many things I wished.

None of them changed what I had.

I had to work with what remained.

I returned to the fire.

The stone near the bottom of the hearth still needed attention.

I looked at the dark opening beneath it.

That was where the box had been hidden.

I could hardly believe I had found it by accident.

I hadn't been searching for treasure.

I had been worried about burning embers reaching the wooden floor.

The discovery had happened because I was trying to prevent another danger.

I thought about that for a while.

I remembered Grandpa examining damaged furniture.

He never ignored a problem simply because something else seemed more interesting.

A loose joint needed attention.

A cracked board needed examination.

A tool with a damaged handle needed to be set aside until it was safe.

I had wanted to move the fireplace stone because it looked dangerous.

That concern still mattered.

The discovery of gold hadn't made the hearth safer.

I watched the flames carefully.

I made sure the burning wood remained away from the gap.

I didn't try to force the stone into position while the fire was active.

I knew enough to avoid that.

I would need to deal with it when the hearth was safe to examine properly.

For now, I could keep the fire contained.

I looked toward the box.

Its rusted surface caught a little orange light.

I pulled it closer.

The weight had become familiar.

So had the sound of the latch.

I opened it.

The twenty coins lay inside.

I didn't count them immediately.

I simply looked.

Gold had seemed like freedom when I first discovered it.

Now it seemed like a question I didn't know how to answer.

I lifted the hunting knife carefully.

The polished antler handle was smooth.

I admired the workmanship again.

Grandpa would have appreciated it.

I could almost imagine him examining the handle before commenting on the blade.

He had taught me that useful things should be made with care.

A tool wasn't good simply because it looked expensive.

It had to be dependable.

I turned the knife once in my hand.

Then I placed it back.

I had no reason to use it.

It had been intended for Rose.

That fact remained with me.

I reached for the letter.

The old paper was fragile.

I unfolded it slowly.

I looked at Silas Croft's name.

Then the date 1848.

Then Rose.

I had read those details so often that I almost knew where each appeared on the page.

Yet I still felt something when I saw her name.

Rose had been loved.

Her father had saved something for her.

And she had died before receiving it.

Those were the facts.

I didn't need to invent the rest of her life to understand the sorrow.

I thought about my own mother.

Two months had passed since her burial.

Some moments, the loss still felt impossible.

I kept expecting to remember something ordinary and realize I could never share it with her.

A small success.

A mistake.

An amusing thought.

I couldn't tell her any of it.

That was what hurt most.

It wasn't only losing her protection.

It was losing the person who would have wanted to know what happened to me.

I touched the blanket around my shoulders.

I wished I could tell her about the cabin.

I wished I could describe the storm and watch her face as she realized how close I had come to dying.

She would have been frightened.

I knew that much.

I wished I could tell her I had remembered Grandpa's lessons.

That I had made a fire.

That I had found something hidden beneath the fireplace.

And that I was trying very hard not to make another foolish decision.

But there was nobody to tell.

I looked down at the letter again.

Silas had written words that remained after he was gone.

For a moment, I envied Rose.

Then I felt ashamed.

She had died.

She had never received the treasure.

There was nothing to envy in that.

What I wanted was the certainty of being remembered.

The certainty that I mattered to someone even when I wasn't standing in front of them.

Mama had given me that.

Grandpa had given me that.

Elias had not.

I had spent years trying to earn his approval.

Now I wondered why I had believed his approval was the measure of my worth.

I remembered being ten when he married Mama.

I had tried to behave properly.

I had tried to make myself useful.

Whenever he seemed displeased, I searched for something I might have done wrong.

Perhaps I had spoken too loudly.

Perhaps I had forgotten a chore.

Perhaps I had left something where it didn't belong.

I had always believed I could correct the problem.

But the morning he turned me out, I had done nothing wrong.

I had simply become eighteen.

Mama was gone.

And he decided that was enough.

I couldn't repair his lack of kindness.

That was a difficult thing for a carpenter's granddaughter to accept.

I had been taught to look for solutions.

But some problems weren't mine to solve.

Some broken things belonged to the person who had broken them.

Elias's treatment of me was one of those things.

I looked at my hands.

They could sharpen tools.

Repair furniture.

Build small useful things from scraps of wood.

But they couldn't make someone love me.

I had spent years trying.

I didn't want to spend the rest of my life doing the same.

I folded the letter carefully.

Then I placed it back inside the box.

I counted the coins.

Twenty.

The number hadn't changed.

I wondered how long it would take me to earn that much through ordinary work.

I couldn't know without knowing their precise value.

But I knew it would not be a small amount.

The thought tempted me.

I imagined using some of the money to buy a room.

Food.

Clothing.

A chance to begin again without immediate fear.

Then I remembered the letter.

I didn't know what Silas had intended anyone other than Rose to do with the treasure.

I didn't want to pretend I did.

I had to remain honest about that uncertainty.

I closed the box.

For the moment, I would keep everything together.

That decision hadn't changed.

I placed it on the folded cloth away from the heat.

Then I looked toward the window.

The wind sounded quieter.

I wanted to believe the storm was ending.

But I had made that kind of hopeful assumption before.

I wasn't going to leave simply because the wind eased for a moment.

I needed to see the road.

Or at least enough of the landscape to judge whether traveling was possible.

I couldn't afford another mistake.

I stood and walked toward the window.

The damaged shutter moved slightly.

Beyond it, snow covered the ground and the lower portions of the trees.

The two pines remained visible.

I stared between them.

I remembered seeing the cabin roof through the blizzard.

If I had walked a little farther in another direction, I might never have found it.

The thought made my stomach tighten.

I stepped away from the window.

I didn't want to dwell on how close I had come to dying.

But I didn't want to forget it either.

Fear had taught me something.

Not that I should never take risks.

I knew life would require them.

But that a risk should be understood before it was taken whenever possible.

I had not understood the mountain road.

I had not respected the storm.

I had allowed my fear of poverty to become stronger than my judgment.

I couldn't change that.

I could learn from it.

I returned to the fireplace.

The little flame was still burning.

I moved closer.

Then I sat down with the blanket around my knees.

The cabin was cold beyond the reach of the hearth.

But I was no longer shaking uncontrollably.

I could think.

I could move.

I could make decisions.

Those were things I had nearly lost.

I looked at the box once more.

The gold might someday help me.

I couldn't deny that possibility.

But the cabin had taught me something the coins couldn't.

A person needed more than money to survive.

Knowledge mattered.

Patience mattered.

Good judgment mattered.

And the work people left behind could continue helping others long after they were gone.

Grandpa had left me his lessons.

Mama had left me her blanket and the knowledge that I had been loved.

Silas had left a cabin that still offered shelter.

And he had left a letter that made me think about how I wanted to live.

I didn't know what would happen next.

I didn't know when the storm would release me.

But I knew I would not rush into the snow simply because I was tired of waiting.

I would tend the fire.

Protect the box.

Preserve my strength.

And when I finally left, I would try to carry more than fear into the life ahead.

Click here to continue reading: PART 18: The Longer I Studied Silas Croft’s Hidden Gift, the Harder It Became to
