But you never made room in that plan for mine.”

My father leaned back.

My mother began crying again.

I didn't know whether her tears came from regret or frustration.

I had spent my whole life trying to read her expression.

I wasn't going to pretend I could read her thoughts now.

Ben placed his hand near mine.

He didn't interrupt.

He had promised to support me, and he was doing exactly that.

I looked at my sister.

She was holding a tissue too.

Kyle sat beside her, quietly listening.

I could see that this wasn't easy for them.

But it wasn't supposed to be easy.

Something serious had happened.

And for the first time, we were discussing it without allowing my parents to decide which details mattered.

Medelli spoke softly.

“I didn't know you were waiting for them that long.”

I looked at her.

She meant the hospital.

I nodded.

“I kept checking my phone.”

My voice sounded smaller than I'd intended.

I remembered Eleanor sleeping against me.

The ache in my body.

The hospital blanket.

The light from the window.

I remembered seeing photographs and messages about how excited everyone was for Medelli's little boy.

I had been happy for her.

I still was.

But I had also been waiting.

And waiting can become painful when you realize someone isn't coming.

My father cleared his throat.

He said they had been excited and exhausted.

He said it had been a long day for everyone.

I looked at him.

“It was a long day for me too.”

He stopped.

I continued.

“I wasn't asking you to stay for hours. I wanted you to come through the door.”

He nodded.

“I understand.”

I wasn't sure he did.

But he wasn't arguing anymore.

That was something.

My mother looked up.

“We love Eleanor.”

I wanted those words to comfort me.

Instead, I found myself thinking about how little they'd done to show it.

I looked at her.

“Then please remember she's your granddaughter too.”

She began crying harder.

Medelli looked down.

My father reached toward my mother's hand.

For a moment, the four of us seemed very far apart.

Not because we were sitting at different sides of a table.

Because we had spent years living in different versions of the same family.

In my parents' version, I was the daughter who never needed much.

Medelli was the daughter who needed protection.

They were the parents doing their best.

And every sacrifice was justified because it was for family.

In my version, I had spent years teaching myself not to ask.

I had become proud of things I shouldn't have had to do alone.

I had learned to make my needs small enough that nobody could call them inconvenient.

Now Eleanor was here.

And I couldn't keep living that way.

I looked at Dad.

“I don't want to argue about who had it harder growing up.”

He nodded slowly.

“Neither do I.”

“But I need you to acknowledge that what happened wasn't fair.”

He looked uncomfortable.

I continued.

“You celebrated one grandchild and barely acknowledged the other. Then you tried to move one daughter's family into the other daughter's house.”

I let the words settle.

“Those choices hurt people.”

Dad looked at his hands.

Mom didn't speak.

I wondered whether I was asking for too much.

An acknowledgment.

An explanation.

An apology that didn't contain a reason why I should stop being upset.

Then I caught myself.

I had been asking that question my entire life.

Was I asking for too much?

When all I wanted was to be treated as though my feelings mattered.

I took a slow breath.

I wasn't going to apologize for the question.

My father finally spoke.

“We should have handled things differently.”

I looked at him.

It wasn't the apology I had hoped for.

But it was the first time he'd admitted that their actions might have been wrong.

I waited.

He didn't add anything.

Mom wiped her face.

She said she had been worried about Medelli.

She had been frightened about the rent increase.

She didn't want her younger daughter starting motherhood with financial problems.

I listened.

I understood those fears.

But understanding them wasn't the same as accepting what she'd done.

“I know you were worried.”

She nodded.

I continued.

“You could have asked us what help we were comfortable giving.”

She looked down.

“You could have helped them look for another apartment.”

She didn't answer.

“You could have respected it when we said no.”

My father shifted in his seat.

I looked at him.

“And you could have stopped before going to our house.”

He glanced away.

I remembered the security footage.

His car in the driveway.

Kyle beside the garage.

The old code being entered twice.

The front door being tested.

I had watched the recording enough times that I could picture every movement.

My father looked uncomfortable.

He said he had believed my mother had arranged everything.

I nodded.

“That may be what you believed at first.”

He looked at me.

“But you knew I'd refused when you went over there.”

He didn't answer.

The silence told me he understood the difference.

He had spoken to me that morning.

I had told him clearly that nobody was moving into our home.

And he had gone there anyway.

I wasn't going to let him describe that as confusion.

I looked at Mom.

“And you knew we hadn't agreed when you gave them that document.”

She began to speak.

I held up one hand slightly.

Not to silence her.

To ask her to listen.

“You admitted that you expected me to refuse.”

Her eyes filled again.

“That means you knew permission mattered.”

She looked away.

I felt my throat tighten.

“You just decided my permission wasn't necessary.”

For a long time, nobody spoke.

Then Medelli reached for Kyle's hand.

I noticed how tightly she held it.

I thought about my sister's son.

He was still so small.

He had no idea that adults were sitting in a restaurant discussing decisions made in his name.

He hadn't asked for anyone's house.

He hadn't asked anyone to forge a document.

He hadn't asked his grandmother to choose between grandchildren.

I felt sad for him.

And for Eleanor.

Because they deserved a family that could love them without turning their needs into a contest.

I looked at my parents again.

“I want both babies to grow up knowing they're loved.”

Mom nodded immediately.

“Of course.”

“But that has to mean something.”

She stared at me.

“It can't mean one child always gets everything because the other one is expected to cope.”

Dad looked down.

I could see that he was tired of the conversation.

I was tired too.

But I wasn't finished.

The emotional hurt mattered.

So did the paperwork.

And we still hadn't answered the question that had brought us there.

I looked toward Ben.

He gave me a small nod.

I turned back to my parents.

“We also need to talk about the signature.”

My mother became very still.

I watched her face.

She no longer seemed focused on the hospital.

Or on Eleanor.

Or on the unfairness I'd described.

Her attention had moved to the folder beside Ben.

I felt my stomach tighten.

Because whatever she felt about my words, the document remained.

Someone had put my name on an agreement I hadn't signed.

And I wasn't leaving the restaurant pretending that question had disappeared.

<a
